Georgia quarterback Carson Beck reveres course, reportedly plans to enter transfer portal
ATHENS — Carson Beck’s time in college football may not be done after all. According to a report from Pete Nakos and Steve Wiltfong of On3, Beck has entered the transfer portal.

Probably for the best. Grateful for what he’s done for Georgia and I truly believe he’s a DGD at the end of the day. But… while I’m not normally inclined to defend Bobo, I’m convinced Beck’s struggles the past year were mostly his own doing. I think he saw that a) Georgia fans had kinda soured on him, and b) if he stayed he might have to win the starting job again. Let him take his Lambo attitude and V-6 Mustang stats somewhere else.
So Georgia fans successfully made another QB so miserably uncomfortable they are ready to gtfoh in high gear. Only this one still has eligibility left. When are we going to look ourselves in the mirror and realize these kids are human and not just pawns in a scheme for ur amusement/enjoyment. Our fan base was toxic to Carson and deserves this. But he didn’t deserve it. So ashamed of us.
Do something about our O Line Coach please
Why?????
Maybe he doesn’t want to risk injury behind an inexperienced OL next season. Whatever the reason, I wish him well.
Predictably bad news on his draft evaluation.
Carson Beck does not listen to what UGA fans say about him. He probably isn't even aware that a very small % of UGA fans think he was detrimental to UGA success in '24.
Who he does listen to is his advisors and his NFL evaluation. With his season in '24 he went from probable 1st rd pick to probable 3rd day NFL pick.
To try and use his '24 season to springboard into the NFL was not smart. IF Ewers is worth $6M as a transfer, CBeck is worth more than he would make next year in the NFL. CBeck is just not worth that $3M in NIL he was being paid last year while at UGA. But he will be paid well to play somewhere.
So it is smart business to come back, put up good numbers, show his arm is okay and make more guaranteed money next year than he would as a later round NFL pick.
Now that he is coming back, does he come back to UGA? The question is who gives UGA a better chance to win next year Beck or Stockton?
Unless he made this official by Tuesday, he can't enter the portal. Teams in the playoffs had 5 days after they finished playing for players to enter the portal. Georgia lost on Thursday so the deadline was Tuesday. He could return to Georgia next season. Entering the portal doesn't necessarily means he's officially gone.
@UGADad20
"CBeck is just not worth that $3M in NIL he was being paid last year while at UGA."
Huh? Despite the effusive praise from the AJC and UGA fans because of the difficult circumstances, Gunner Stockton had 1 TD pass in 2 games. And in both those games he had a healthy Trevor Etienne, plus an OL and DL that was healthier than it was most of the season. Carson Beck by contrast led the SEC in TD passes. So … if you don't think that an the SEC title and playoff berth as opposed to going 9-4 with a berth in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl at best and seeing South Carolina go to the playoff in UGA's place wasn't worth $3 million in NIL, then you may wish to re-evaluate.
He needs to show out with a team that has a good receiver corps and a good OC. That will put him in the first round and the big money.
I'm afraid Bobo and our receiver corp did not do him any favors in the draft.
”He probably isn't even aware that a very small % of UGA fans think he was detrimental to UGA success in '24.”
I assure you, it isn’t “a very small %”, more like a substantial percentage, less than half, but more than 40% around my neck of the woods. 😉
Predicted this would happen awhile ago, and this was before I knew that UGA was going to lose their top 2 WRs from an already subpar group of WRs, 4 of the 5 guys from a not-so-dominant offensive line and fail to pick up a productive starter on offense from the transfer portal. Plus, UGA doesn't exactly have Orson Charles or Knowshon Moreno coming back at TE or RB. Add it up and UGA in 2024 won't be the best place for Carson Beck to improve his NFL draft stock.
Even if UGA has another historically great defense like in 2021 and only needs a "good enough" offense, while that would be great for UGA fans and Kirby Smart, the modern NFL doesn't care about QBs who win national titles anywhere near as much as they did in the 1980s and maybe 1990s. AJ McCarron is 6'4", has a decent arm, put up good stats in a pro style offense and won 2 national titles … and it only got him into the 5th round.
Where would Beck go? Well there are two head coaches who were assistants on UGA's staff during Beck's UGA tenure: Oregon and Syracuse. Expect for Beck to go to one or the other, especially if Kyle McCord's waiver doesn't get approved. And oh yeah, I almost forgot: Ohio State. Will Howard is done after this season. And Penn State too, as their QB was in the same recruiting class as Beck. There's also Notre Dame, but I think that Marcus Freeman prefers dual threat QBs. But ND has also been heavily rumored to be the party that offered Quinn Ewers, who is even less mobile than Beck, $6 million so who knows.
He has already graduated and can transfer with/without any portal entry. Any player that has graduated can transfer at any point and don't need to enter the portal.
I figured this may happen. Even with the very weak QB field in this draft, he was likely not going to be a first round selection. He definitely has the talent and I wish him the best of luck putting it together. He definitely was a DGD and I wish him much success - unless he faces the DAWGS.
I think the way this played out is easy to see. Declared for the draft and got mixed feedback. Had second thoughts.
Stockton had taken over and looked pretty good, better against Texas.
Beck has to go pro after next season. Better to get another big pay-day and a guaranteed starting position with another team. If he had stayed at UGA and wound up splitting time with Stockton or worse losing the starting job, that would severely hurt his draft stock. It makes sense.
I wish he was returning to Georgia but without a guarantee of the starters position, I understand the move. Best of luck to Carson.
