Yes, the RB room is a big question mark. The O-line is a big question mark.
Experience probably trumps talent in today's NIL and TP world.
And I'm not talking about the talent in either one of these areas, but experience is really is more important than talent when you are talking some of these greenhorns. We've got the talent in both these areas. They don't have the size, strength, and in many cases the speed of guys a bit older and more experienced. Going from high school to college - at this elevated level - is a BIG jump in competition, strength, endurance, conditioning, and talent. It takes time to develop these guys, but occasionally you do see a diamond in the rough shine as a freshman. Frazier stepped up as a freshman, but he had Etienne as the experience in front of him. Frazier has got no one to help him, because even if we get one or both of those Robinson boys back in the lineup, they are not going to be in game condition nor battle-tested like they need to be. So, it's possible to be that diamond, but it won't be the way for a majority of these guys.
I'm not worried about the defense. The Defense SHOULD be better than last year or Schumann and company are not doing their job.
But a very young team. We'll see if most of these guys stick around to grow old as a Dawg…
I'm not nearly as concerned about the RB room as I am about the OL room. We have to have dominance at the LOS or everything else is a moot point.
I was very happy to see that Coach Smart brought in some coaching talent for the O line.
As a side note, we aren't in the same world where teams have 4 people deep on the depth chart. If someone has talent, but not playing, they will jump to another school. I think it's time for kirby to dial back the physical scrimages somehow. Most teams aren't even having spring practices. We just had a starting lineman go down. I know he believes in the physical nature of practices, and his mentor preached that. But times have changed, and Saban left for that reason. Part of the reason we had a tough year were all the injuries. Before I get jumped on, I know the previous way was the best way, but we just don't have the luxury of playing 3rd string. In some cases, 3rd string is a baby just out of high school.
I have faith that the current talent in our O-Line will quickly mature and jell with the veterans and newbies working off each other to form a "technique" driven hole opening, QB protecting unit. I have even more faith that our RB "youngsters" will likewise grow up fast…..the burning question I continue to have is what exactly is the medical issues with the Robinsons? Do they just heal slowly, are they injury prone, is it something they are doing or not doing??? They both have talent to be 1k plus RB's but that will never happen if they never take the field.
