Kirby Smart: Georgiaâs primary opponent âis us, and itâs going to be us every weekâ

âYouâre asking about the opponent, the opponent is us, and itâs going to be us every week this year,â Smart said, likely referring to the newness of the Bulldogsâ roster with 54 percent of the team first- or second-year players.

I probably knew, but forgot—we averaged only 124 yards per game last season rushing. That's a pretty stunning number when you think of our rushing stats from the past. No wonder the coaches are really stressing rushing goals this year—they should!!
From Mike's other recent article on Jordan Hall and the D-line:
"the Bulldogs were out-rushed in all three of last season’s losses: 1) Alabama had 177 yards on the ground to UGA’s 80 in the Tide’s 41-34 win; 2) Ole Miss gained 134 yards rushing to Georgia’s 59 in the Rebels’ 28-10 win; 3) Notre Dame rushed for 154 yards to the Bulldogs’ 62 in the Irish’s 23-10 CFP Sugar Bowl victory."
I'll post it again: while the yards allowed numbers aren't great, they pale in comparison to the pathetic offensive efforts on the ground in those games: 80, 59, 62 yards rushing respectively. That's an embarrassment for a Georgia team.
Searels had an O-line with an NFL 2nd rounder (Ratledge) and a 3rd rounder (Wilson) playing, too. It has to get fixed this year. And no more talk about injuries. Everyone has injuries. All season long. Time for the OL to man up and that includes Searels.
ps - if they put 8 guys in the box, throw the ball.
GO DAWGS.
I hope one of the goals on defense is stopping/containing the QB run. Inability to stop QB run cost two games against Alabama: SEC championship game 2023 and last year's game at T-town. UMASS stayed in the game using QB run, and then there is HAYNES KING.
A suggestion: block the man in front of you. Don’t make it complicated. It’s football.
I agree with DMVDawg on stopping the QB run. I would add that we need to improve on “setting the edge.” Watching an opponent run wide with no Dawg forcing the play inside is very frustrating and it happens far too often.
