Georgia football winners and losers after another loss to Alabama

Comments
loser:
The fans. We way over spent and thought this year would be different when bama came to Athens.
Loser: Kirby & Company.
The team was not adequately prepared which showed up in its exceedingly slow start. Adjustments were made but they were both late in coming and insufficient. We were too often very predictable. We were out-coached.
Go, Dawgs!
“The two better opponents we played, we did not execute well in the first,” Smart said. “It’s really frustrating because we show we can in the second half. We showed we can in the second and third quarter with Tennessee. And with this game, it was more second half.”
I'm not sure what planet Kirby was on or what football game he was referring to when he made this comment, but it certainly doesn't reflect the reality of what occurred on the field Saturday against Bama. Maybe a bit with the Vols, but we were simply lucky to win that game when they missed a pretty easy FG. And against Bama, we did NOT show up on offense in the 2nd half. We scored one lousy TD in 2 quarters.
We could easily be 2-2.
On the one hand, this is a very young football team. The entire right side of our O line played for Langston Hughes in High school last fall. The youthful mistakes were obvious. I hesitate to attack Kirby and Co for that. Having said that, Kirby was Mark Richt until he got Todd Monken. Now, his D Coordinator is questionable, and his O Coordinator is questionable. This is all on Kirby. And there isn't a quick fix.
On the positive side, I do believe Kirby will finally figure it out. He won't be Dabo. I hope.
@jdatl3...why in the heck did Kirby run that 4th down controversial play to Cash Jones that Bama blew up to the right side of an inexperienced, underperforming high school line??
It makes no sense. I questioned the call to begin with, but I completely disagree with running it to our weak side of the O-line. Baffling.
I can name several teams including Bama and Oklahoma who have new OCs, and those teams have come out pretty strong in their offense. If Mateer hadn't gotten hurt at Oklahoma, those guys would still be on a tear.
loser;
The fans. We are funding this team of paid players who aren’t performing. You can’t ask elite prices and give bargain performances. This whole system of paying players needs repercussions when performance doesn’t match.
I know this sounds sour grapes this morning, but it is ridiculous watching UGA sleep thru the first half on defense, like they weren’t expecting bama to be good??? No excuses for this loss yall other than laziness and people coaching in positions they are qualified for.
remember what we’ve been told….
The standard is the standard.
there needs to be repercussions when that standard isn’t met and yes I’m talking about coaches and these professional players
We have been chumped by Kirby Smart. He made his money with Dan Lanning and Todd Monken. Since then, he has scammed us into virtually paying him a million dollars for each game he coaches. He isn't worth it, and I now believe his stock is overrated. We all have life cycles. Kirby's peaked about three years ago. He became untouchable and surrounded himself with his yes man college football buddies and they've been having a great time together counting all their money while our program atrophied. News flash: We are no longer elite because our coaching staff is mediocre or worse. That includes Smart who from all reports smothers and suffocates all those around him. Look at all the great players who have left. It does not have to be this way. Nobody is indispensable. The university senior leaders ought to read Smart the riot act and give him strict milestones to turn this progam around. There are lots of young coaches at the beginning of their professional life cycles who could restore UGA football to glory. Do not be surprised when Georgia Tech beats us for a Thanksgiving wake-up call.
I'll recommend the biggest **** award go to #1 on defense.
Er, uh…. That would be because he's a bonehead.
Hindsight is 20/20, but on that 4th down call, you are basically betting the game that a true freshman lineman is going to block LT Overton.
That said, my biggest complaint is going hurry up tempo on the play.
Sometimes it’s better to collect yourself, organize the offense, and remind the freshman lineman to, oh, I don’t know, block the guy in front of him on the play.
It would also allow the substitution of Cash Jones, who has his strengths, but short-yardage situations are not one of them.
Considering the game situation, the failed 3rd down screen to Jones is the ugliest offensive play Georgia has run in a long, long time.
Even if it had worked, it would have been nullified by an illegal motion penalty.
It DIDN’T COME CLOSE to working.
Losers: The OC & DC. Mike Booboo continues to get worse in play calling every game. We ran the ball the best we have in 2 seasons, but would start throwing it again after those huge runs. The personnel on the field during critical moments was pathetic. Why was a freshman WR that hasn’t caught a meaningful pass all season in the biggest game of the season when we have several stud WRs ahead of him that would have caught that pass? I don’t disagree with going for it on 4th down, but I do disagree with the play call and the personnel on the field. If that was the plan, have better personnel on the field to run the play and to the stronger side of the O line.
Clueless Schumman can’t run a defense without Muschamp’s help. He’s getting worse as DC, his scheme is terrible, adjustments are made too late, and the defense is constantly putting the offense in danger every big game. Hopefully he will get a head coaching job somewhere this offseason.
Losers; The fans. Poured our heart and soul out in this game to be treated to a bunch of coaches and most of the team that didn’t. We are also continually being nickled and dimed by this athletic association because of NIL. Most every checkout at concession stands asks for a tip and round up for the athletic department. NO! Now the I-field parking lots, that have been free parking forever and the first 2 home games this season, are now paid lots and it was not advertised that it became a paid lot and caused major backups in that area.
MontanaDawg, I agree. This game looks worse in the light of day. Looks worse by the minute. Looks worse because everyone has been screaming about the problem for a year and a half. I would hope that in Kirby's heart, he knows that he should have kicked the ball, but is trying to save face. Regardless, this is why you don't hire a buddy. Anyone else would have fired bobo last year, but since they are long term buddies, Kirby hesitated. This isn't the first poor offensive showing. What's worse, it's not the first poor defensive showing. This situation gets worse with age, especially since everyone has highlighted these issues. Kirby is getting dangerously close to being know as Kirby the Ostrich. After two NC's, he'll have a lot of latitude. But the damage to recruiting won't be small.
Oh wow, lots of hate coming out. Look, I get it and I feel the pain as well.
I've said this before and I'll keep saying it - the 4th down call doesn't matter. I find it funny that if we had gotten a FG and still lost the game that these same people would've wondered why we didn't go for it. Remember, Bama finished the game having easily moved the ball to mid field and had 2 minutes worth of clock and could've easily gotten at least a FG to win. Even if they don't, best case scenario is that we make it to OT and get lucky.
I'd take the chance with a 4th and 1 with the worst case being that the opposing team gets the ball at their 8 yard line as opposed to tying the game and having better field position for Bama (more than likely) with lots of time to get far enough down for a FG. Now, granted, I wouldn't have chosen Cash Jones - I would've gone with a more straightforward play with Frazier, Bowens or even a quick pass to Branch, but that's a different story.
Fault NEEDS to be placed on whomever was in charge of preparations, because this happens EVERYTIME we have an off week. We look like crap and fall behind. I don't know why Smart refuses to acknowledge this and I don't know why reporters won't ask about it. You can't start the game (at Home and favorites to win) after a week off with a 4-and-out gaining 2 yards. Bama was prepared - they did 14 plays for 74 yards and began to wear out our D. Next drive? Penalty, 24 yard run, then incomplete, 5 yard run and incomplete. FAIL. FAIL. FAIL.
This whole "come from behind" crap needs to end. The game was lost the moment we went down by 14 points. Whether we get lucky and come back or not doesn't matter - you're not going to win many games that way.
I'm not going to pile on the freshmen O-linemen. Overall, they did a nice job. All those 227 rushing yards we gained didn't go over the left side. The fault was Kirby's for not putting Bowens or McCray back in the game. Who cares if Bama got their "cleats set," as Kirby said. We were whipping them up front anyway. But I've still yet to hear Kirby explain why he was so adamant about going for it in the first place, even saying he would do it again "10 out of 10 times." Why not take the (almost) guaranteed tie with 13 minutes left in the game, and then just play it out from there? At that point, there was no guarantee we would get back down in scoring territory again (which we didn't) so, take the tie now just in case. At least you wouldn't have been chasing points the rest of the game. That said, folks who won't Kirby gone are being quite ridiculous. Since he's been here, the man has led us to three NCG, won two of them (should have won the other), 3 SEC championships and has us in playoff contention every year. Is he too loyal to his friends? Probably? Is he too stubborn and defiant at times? Definitely. But right this minute, go ask the fans of ANY SEC team if they would trade their current coach for Smart straight up and with the exception of perhaps Texas and Texas A&M, they would ALL take Kirby. These are the golden years of UGA football and I'm gonna ride or die with the Dawgs — and Kirby. Go Dawgs!
