Bowers could line up anywhere from the backfield to wideout and if you put him in motion, teams would have to scramble to defend his speed and ability to break tackles. A real headache for a defensive coach. He took over that Auburn game.
Right now there's three TEs being mainly used for blocking. And they are really pretty good at it. Terribly misused in the passing game. Hope that improves. Having the luxury of some really talented wide receivers this year may be part of it.
Stiffneck. Totally agree.
All Gunner has to do is let it rip. The TEs are open he's just not looking their way. Its not the play calling, its the QB and his decision making. He's locked in on Branch, Young and Humphrey. Also too Thomas has been open as well.
I had no idea prior to last Saturday that Delp could run that well, let's take advantage of that.
Whether by design or execution on the field, these guys are wayyyyyy underutilized… they are all really good, and we can certainly use increased scoring and pace as long as we have a D that still gives up way too many points early. My expectation is that these guys can win UGA some more games than "d@#$ the torpedoes" running emphasis by itself. This is, I'm sure, going to get figured out in the next few games… and it's probably the D's ability to show up on third down that will give all of these amazingly talented offensive players more touches.
While the Dawgs may indeed get the wins needed if they don't increase TE usage, I worry for the next season if we don't. In an era of TP+NIL, talent like this won't hang around long if underutilized :/
I'm no Einstein but let me just say that it would be so much more logical of an offensive plan to simply throw it to the OPEN receiver instead of worrying about who deserves and doesn't deserve more touches…but what do I know….
@Gramster @Stiffneck Great Comments by Both of Yall !! Gramster says you throw it to the guy that’s Open !! Amen to that !! True !!
Stiffneck says Right now there's three TEs being mainly used for blocking. And they are really pretty good at it. Amen to that to !! That’s also True !!
YES there have been times that Gunner has missed some open people and the criticism on that is warranted. But he’s gained numerous First downs and either 5 or 6 TDs with his feet. He has a 5.0 yds per carry making him our Third leading rusher so he deserves Credit for that.
If the play calls for the TEs to block for the other guys he can’t very well throw it to them !!
Now I’m gonna off topic the snot out of this thread Lol !! First by saying I Don’t Care How we score just Score and score often !! RUN the ball !! Run it using the Powerful and Speedy RB room that we are blessed with !! Gunner sprinkle in some short to intermediate passes to keep the rival defense on their toes.
And Yes take a few Safe shots down field. Even if it’s a miss he Might draw a PI on the rival defense. When I say Safe I mean when our guy is as open as possible. But Gunner Can make some of the tougher deep throws he’s shown that.
Nothing breaks and wearies a defense like being able to pretty much run the ball at them at will !! Run the ball, again with some Good passes sprinkled in and Gas the opposing defense.
We Are blessed with a great TE room but I believe we’re blessed with an even Greater RB room !! ALLOT of people including me Love to see a beautiful Deep spiral ball thrown to Our receiver. It’s a thing of beauty !! I get that.
Pounding the ball methodically is not nearly as “ pretty”. But it’s a nightmare for the defense. A deep pass occurs in a few seconds. A great and methodical run game lasts for many minutes. We have Power, Strength, Speed, and Finesse in our RB room. Use it !! That doesn’t mean totally abandon passes. Just make the best and safest passes short, intermediate, and deep. Just my humble opinions. I’ll close by saying YES use those TEs in some of those aforementioned passes I referenced.
I’m Head Coach of the Fantasy football in my Mind !! 🤣🤣
Maybe we have possibly the best tight end room in the country because the ones here now saw how we used Bowers when he was here, and Washington before him, when they were being recruited. I know the current guys are not Brock Bowers. But I played as a walk on a very long time ago, and I know for a fact it is easier for a quality tight end working on a slower linebacker to get open, than it is for some wide receivers to get open against the speedy cornerbacks who specialize in tight coverage. Just a couple of quick slants to the tight ends on the linebackers will make the defense change and even help open up the running game. We are in the running to get another 5 star, the highest ranked tight end for 2027, (another) Brock Williams. We are competing with the Buckeyes and Longhorns for his services. My point is, we won't continue to have the best tight end room in the country if we don't change the current game plan to get the ball to them more often. 8 catches in 5 games for 118 yards is just not enough. Not only will you not get future commitments, but current young players like Elyiss Williams might seek greener pastures.
Great comments !! You know much more about the game than I do. I agree we need to get the ball to the TEs more often. Just wanted to add I wouldn’t be afraid to use younger guys in certain positions either. Some of the mega HS’s some of these kids come from are like being at a junior college at a minimum. Coupled with what coaching that they have had though maybe limited at UGA these are High Quality players. I wouldn’t be afraid to throw the ball to them.
I know Kirby puts Allot of emphasis on blocking. I get that and it’s a good thing. But if you’ve got a guy or guys plural that has shown great hands in practice I wouldn’t sweat whether he’s all that great at blocking in Certain games in Certain situations.
When you Need points, you need points, and if that guy with the great hands can give you that I say use him Then and keep practicing the blocking in practices. I probably didn’t make any sense as to many times I have a hard time articulating what I’m trying to say.
But when you need points to get and seal the win Use that guy, you’ve got plenty of time to practice blocking !! Hope you can make sense out of what I was trying to say Lol !!
