The immortal words of Jim Mora ringing in my ears…
With all the youth, inexperience and OLine injuries this year if this team indeed makes the playoffs I would consider that in and of itself a smashing success. I absolutely love the heart and resolve of the entire team, coaches and players both. They are certainly entertaining to watch! Go Dawgs!
If the resilience of this team is to be praised (which it should be), it should also be said that they have to be resilient because of how poorly prepared they are to begin most games. Without the players' toughness and 2nd half adjustments by the coaches, we're likely 1-3 in the SEC. I love Kirby Smart and know there is no way we could do any better than him. Not even close. And, the days of dominant teams is over because of NIL & the transfer portal. But to see a team this talented play so consistently poorly in the 1st half is tough to understand. I saw a clip of Saban talking about how his assistants would make sure the same mistakes didn't happen over & over because they knew he'd chew their "rear end" if they did. Are our assistants getting their rear ends chewed by Kirby? I hope so. But, I'm not seeing any evidence of that come game time the next weekend.
I give Gunner an upgrade from B- to a B+ as he was beat to pieces in the first half. There were only two Roughing the passer calls made with one being the Targetting but I saw At Least stress on that Two more that weren’t called.
YES he missed on the deep throws but at least he was attempting them and one was within the realm of catchable. I forget who the receiver was. And his Feet bought us valuable first downs and a TD.
The announcers and even this article talk about he could have set up for a TD instead of running through and Getting the TD. I’d rather Get the score than “set up” for it There’s been some times Dawgs were at or near the goal line and either come away empty handed or had to settle for a FG. If you can Get the TD go ahead and Do it !! Besides if Gunner had been a tad short they would have still had opportunity to go after it.
As a Dual Threat QB I feel Gunner is doing pretty well thus far. One INT through Six games. One Loss by 3 points that in my view was a Team Loss. He has Not played “Elite” in his first six games but neither did Stetson and Carson in their first six games. It’s Not unusual at all for a first year starting QB to struggle a bit.
And Some people seem to focus almost Exclusively on his throwing but Don’t acknowledge his Feet and what he’s done by running with the ball. As he’s a Dual Threat QB I think both his arm and his feet should be taken into account for both criticism and praise. Lastly he’s one more tough hombre !!
I thought sure he’d have a concussion last night but he kept jumping back up on his feet and getting right back in the game. I have allot of respect for that !! Go Dawgs !!
Is Schumann worth 2.2 mil. After seeing players constantly out of position, his always telegraphed and easy to read blitz packages and less than stellar defensive back play, of course he is, according to Smart. This ain't 2021 where the Dogs could just muscle it way through opponent's O lines. Scheming up packages that confuse qb's and OC's is the name of the game now and Schumann apparently doesn't have the brains to see this. It's beyond me how Kirby continues to allow this ineptitude game after game.
@navydawg Gunner did pretty well. Wasn't his best performance but didn't turn the ball over. Think his pass was behind the receiver a couple times. Still, he's trending in the right direction. He took some shots - the targeting was awful, imagine bells were ringing. He's a tough cookie.
"The announcers and even this article talk about he could have set up for a TD instead of running through and Getting the TD" - Yeah, if you've got a chance to score you take it. There's no guarantee your going to get it later if you wait.
A typical Bobo game. Runners on Bobo's inside counters are typically caught from behind by linebackers or safeties jumping gaps. Stockton has movie, he has gumption, unfortunately he not a very good QB. Throws behind, high throws. Bobo offense is designed for a pocket passer and Gunner is not. After 21/2 quarters, he finally gets gunner outside the pocket which proved crucial. Why Bobo won't put Gunner under center to use play action has always mystified me. He seems to only use it in short yardage or running out the clock.
Great comments and totally agree. I believe eventually as he throws more of them Gunner will get better on those deep shots. Even Attempting them is a good thing cause you might draw a PI. And the more the attempts them the more the rival defense will have to respect the possibility.
So I hope Bobo Will continue to give him those opportunities.
I sometimes wonder is he being a little TO careful with the ball ? One INT in Six games is pretty good !! But you have to have Risk for Reward. A fine balance I guess. Having to go from a scrambling dual threat type QB to more of a stay in the pocket pure pocket passer is probably quite the challenge for Gunner. Just keep getting after it and get them W’s !!
So true. Anytime you go deep it's pretty much a 50/50 ball. Gotta stretch the field - it keeps the defense honest. That one deep ball that was dropped against Bama was perfect, don't think even Tom Brady could've done it better. He's got a good arm - think he gets a little amped up at times like Aaron Murray use to and puts a little too much on the ball. That'll correct itself as time goes. Yeah, he's limited the interceptions which really helps this team. Think Stetson in his 1st year as a starter had almost as many picks as TDs, but had the luxury of a shutdown defense.
Coaching F
The first half is the coaches game plan and the second half is adjustments. Simplify the game plan and let these kids play ! What goes on week after week for years is madness .
Totally agree again !! I think Gunner gets a little To amped just like you said and over throws the ball. And he’s a little To worried about an INT. With guys like Young, Branch, Thomas, and Humphreys just put the ball where they Can catch it and let Em fight the DB for it !! If they don’t catch it maybe the DB will get called for a PI !!
Speaking of which the Auburn DB had hold of Thomas jersey through the whole play that was a miss and No PI call !! Gunner put the ball over Thomas head But if the DB hadn’t had a hand full of his jersey he might’ve caught that ball. It wasn’t a great pass but it was close enough he could’ve caught it if not the hold by the DB.
I’m convinced Gunner Will get better over time. He holds the HS stats record for Total yardage ( passing & rushing) and Even at the HS level you just don’t do that by chance !! You Have to be a pretty good QB/Athlete to accomplish that Even at the HS level.
I honestly believe we’ve yet to see the best of Gunner Stockton but soon we will !! Every game bad or good gives him Real Game experience and that will give him confidence.
You’ll hear some people cite “ being in the system” that’s a good thing, but no amount of time in the system and practices can substitute for Real Game experience. Always enjoy your reasonable and well thought out comments !! Go Dawgs !!
This all falls on Kirby, the whole program is in decline, since we won in 2022 total offense was 7517 yards 41.03 pts. 2023 6951 yards 40.14 pts. 2024 5676 yards 31.50 pts. Defense stats are not any better. If we as Georgia fans want more titles then things have to change drastically on both sides of the ball. Georgia i don't think has finished lower than a top 3 recruiting class since 2019, that's to many top classes to be tending the wrong way! We can excuse the poor play to NIL or the transfer portal but Georgia and Kirby either evolve or get passed over and Kirby becomes Dabo 2.0.
you do realize the ‘23 team was 13-1 with their only loss in the SEC championship to Alabama. The program is as good as ever, the players have changed and every 5 star isn’t the same.
