Why Kirby Smart actually wasn’t too happy with Gunner Stockton’s late touchdown run

Yes, THAT is why Gunner got a coaching lesson from Coach Kirby…..that a slide there for a first down would have given the Dawgs more plays to run and not give Aubarn a chance to get the ball back

No way does Coach Kirby care about the point spread…..he was simply making a joke about such in his post game conference.

Why, they could have run three plays and, if circumstances were such that there was still time on the clock, they could have kicked a field goal and still had a “cover” (if Coach Kirby really was concerned with covering!!).

It’s the same mindset that Coach Kirby hade in 2021 when he was yelling at Kelee Ringo to “get down “ after his interception! He wanted to keep the ball to burn more clock!
Coach Kirby’s winning above all else mindset is what makes him great! You can look at all the times they don’t “cover” to know that truth!

    Go Dawgs!

    Lol....would you believe....

The NY Giants lost on the last snap of the game, in effort to run the clock out, in the '70's(?)....when the QB to center exchange didn't go to plan.

The other team (?)...scooped the ball up in the Giants backfield....and, ran it in for a walkoff TD.

Lol....That really happened. I can't remember who they were playing....but, I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to find on the net.

That being said....my Brother-in-Law once lost at the Final Table of a Texas Hold 'Em Tournament....with 4 Kings. Lady beat him with a Royal Flush. Lol.…I'm just sayin'...there are no sure things....unless you're holding the Royal.

Turning control back over to Auburn, when you don't have to...ain't Smart. 'Scuse the pun. Lol

I think the team takes his comments with a grain of salt. Drew Bobo would not have said what he said otherwise. I think Gunner and the offense are going to score touchdowns when they can. Beat the Rebels this week and the Dawgs are sitting pretty.

    Agreed!
My main point was to defer the talk that Coach Kirby was more concerned with adjusting the point spread than winning the game in the best way safest way possible.

Without Stockton it's very possible this is a 3-3 team. If things don't get straightened out quickly, and it is likely it is already too deep into the season, there is no natty in sight. The truth hurts!

Yep, going down before the goal line is 100% the right call, especially in that stadium where so many outrageous miracles have occurred, but I can appreciate how tough that would be for a competitor like Stockton to just stop between the first down marker and goal line in that case…just too much to think about and act on in such a tight window with that much adrenaline going. Not the same situation, but it reminds me of Gurley playing for the Falcons vs Detroit years ago when he tried to stop right before the goal line but had too much momentum and scored. If he goes down, they take some knees then kick a chip shot FG to win, but as it was, Stafford got another shot and took them down for a winning TD. I think the whole directive works better for defensive players on turnovers in any case.

    I think you're exactly right.

I remember something along these lines, too.

I'm also very sure that Kirby given the opportunity for a sure - nothing but green grass - pick 6, back when he was a safety, would take the opportunity to slide and run out the clock. Not!

Scoring touchdowns is fun, fun, fun. Plus, there's always the possibility of Auburn running back a bad snap in victory formation and getting a scoop and score to win the game with us just three points ahead. We were playing in The Stadium of Bad JuJu, right?

We needed the seven points for all sorts of reasons. Gunner needed the TD. All of DawgNation needed the visual. Ole Miss needs to see some early designed Gunner runs to remind them that he really is Superman.

This from Kirby, Gunner, or any aspect of Georgia Football had zero to do with Vegas. Anybody thinking otherwise is nuts.

    Go, Dawgs!

You were exactly right on your 1st post. "Imo...it's basic Situational Football. If he takes a knee at the 2 or 3 yd line.…they win the game." GS got the 1st down. AU out of TO's. UGA runs out the clock w/victory formation kneel downs. AU never gets the ball back.

Your Jints/Iggles story above is incorrect. The Giants only had to run out the clock but QB Joe Pisarcik tried to hand off to Larry Csonka instead of taking a knee. Bad exchange, fumble and Herm Edwards scoops and scores. The play is known as The Miracle at the Meadowlands. And that play may have been the birth of the victory formation kneel down.

The late TD made all the UGA bettors happy. Maybe GS had UGA and gave the pts?

Of all the other things you could have written about for that game, this gets the nod? Hmmm.

Yes, sliding was the right thing to do. So was having a defensive game plan in the first half.

Some of the coaching on the sidelines could wait until the team is behind closed doors. If you think you're going to get chewed out up and down on national TV, it's going to affect your decision-making later on.

Would be nice to see Kirby Coach a coach on the sidelines sometimes. I mean they Do have input with the team and the game unless they are mistake free. I might have missed it but I don’t think I’ve see. Kirby chew a Coach on the sideline especially this year. Oh and Dawgs are Six games into the season wonder When or Will he Officially name Gunner the starting QB ? Best I can remember UNLESS the Starter got injured and was replaced ( I think Daniels Was named then replaced by Stets due to injury and possibly Stets didn’t get named after coming in) KS has usually named the Starter publicly by now. Just sayin.

Gunner’s GrandDaddy was a devout Dawgs fan for sure !! Arrested at Auburn for supposedly damaging their field. Supposedly. Then passed away of a heart attack leaving a Dawgs loss at the Ga.-Fl. game. Gunner sure loves him. I get that as I loved Both my GrandDaddy’s but had a special love for my maternal GrandDaddy, he was a sure nuff sporty oldie !! I look forward to seeing him again some day. Maybe soon.
