Gunner Stockton takes ownership of Georgia offense: âI think I just need to cut looseâ

âIt was just being efficient,â Georgia coach Kirby Smart said after the Auburn game. âThatâs who we are. Weâre a 5,7,8,4,5,7,8. Thatâs why we have 17-play drives. We have a coaching staff that puts together a good plan and go operate it. Weâre just not a dynamic, dynamic offense right now in terms of vertical speed and throwing the ball downfield.â

Now, if we can get Bobo on board.
Conner, we scored a TD on our 1st drive last season at Ole Miss, and it turned out to be the only TD. But I understand your logic of needing to start fast.
Love Gunner and Coach Bobo
Our offense is about to get rolling I think/hope.
Gunner is like Novocain: just give him time and he always works and the outcome is usually good.
"I just need to cut loose". I wonder what CKS has to say about that. Seems he has deliberately kept GS on a short leash to minimize his turnover possibilities. And it has worked. Just like he did with SBIV, especially in the beginning. If you think CKS gave GS an ear full after the TD vs AU w/1:53 left wait until GS "cut's loose" a couple of forced throws that turn into INTs.
Clearly CKS's plan for GS to begin his starting career is to be a game manager that minimizes mistakes. I don't think "cutting it loose" is a big part of the game plan. I do think that by being a game manager and playing conservatively, GS's negative plays have been minimized. But conservative play has also allowed the defense to crowd the LOS. They know that most plays (so far) have been runs or short pass plays.
It seems, with CKS, that expanding the offense comes with earning trust in the QB decision making and being able to consistently make the right reads and execute the plays called. It has been and will continue to be the process for CKS.
"All plays work when they are executed"
With the OL performing the way they are, thinks Bobo & Gunner are working miracles. Thankfully, the OL is improving each game - but youth and quality depth has made it all challenging this year. The D' on the edges and safety play have made it difficult also, more concerned with the defense than anywhere else…we just don't have the overall talent we use to.
So, au contraire, thankful we have the staff we do - including Bobo. We are lucky have to have who we do, it seems like we are holding it all together with chewing gum & duct tape. The NIL has bled this team - they are the devil imo. But if there is a ray of sunshine, all teams have that issue. Dominance is long gone, and parity is here to stay…get use to it.
More like "Any Given Saturday" now. We may just not have over130 teams when all is said and done, or whatever the present number is.
Agree 100%. If you watch some of the detailed breakdowns of the games (the Film Guy, etc), you will see the play calls are there on both defense and offense, but it's execution that is missed. The continued torture of poor Cash Jones and him getting the hand off in the Bama game is the perfect example. He is more than capable of running that play and had the O linemen executed as the play called, he walks in for a TD. I believe the play calling and alignments are good and as soon as the execution becomes a bit more consistent, the results will definitely show.
Eastmandawg, I agree with you - I don't think people realize how bad the O line is. Missing assignments like every other play or every third play. Not only are they young and not stout, they are trying to learn on the fly. Opposing defenses are moving and mixing, reeking havoc. Go watch the film guy on youtube talk specifically about it. To have only lost one game is amazing. They are young. Even Bobo isn't even a 2nd year center, since he only played half a year at best. He's basically still in his first year.
it’s hard to cut loose when your getting hammered every drop back . It’s not his fault the oline has been injured since the 1st game . Which forces all those screen and quick throws everybody seems to hate lol . Hopefully they can just keep chopping and grind out wins.
It’s a strange thing to me to read and hear some of the takes people have. We’ve only lost One game by Three points to as much as I Hate to say it Bama. With the exception of FSU they’ve beat every team they’ve played so far. NO I don’t like that but that’s the reality. And Mizzou in particular seemed to be a pretty good team.
I Know we All wish we could have that game back but it was a Team Loss INCLUDING Kirby Smart.
In my 63 years of Listening to then later being able to Watch Dawgs football or Any football. It’s always appeared that the Slow, Methodical, Efficient Offenses tend to gas the rival Defense much more than a Zoom down the field in just over 2 minutes Offense. Those usually reside on the west coast where the scores resemble basketball games with 70-60 scores.
Now I Know a Beautiful Deep Spiral to a receiver who catches it cleanly and goes in for the TD or is Already in the end zone is a thing of Great Beauty. I get that. Hey I enjoy them to.
But if you Really want to demoralize an opposing Defense have a Running Game with short to intermediate passes mixed in that They Can’t Stop !!
I also Know that YES you have to at least attempt the occasional deep throw to keep the rival Defense from crowding the LOS. I get that to. But you Don’t have to have a Mega number of those to Win football games. The Most important Stat of All is that Win/Loss column !! NO ONE at the end of the season is gonna care very much How you got there, just WIN !!
We have a banged up and patched up O Line that deserve credit for playing their hearts out !! But if KS and Bobo start Forcing Gunner to stay in the pocket and look for not just open but Deep open receivers that O Line could leak. Now he Can, he Has got Many first downs and even TDs that he Rarely gets credit for. Especially by those who Insist on comparing him to a pure pocket passer. But if he’s gonna get Chewed for gaining a critical first down with his FEET by KS and Bobo then Gunner might become Gun Shy. And we might well start losing games as a result. But at least we’ll get to see Allot of deep passes thrown.
I mean what he’s been doing has cost us Allot of games and INTs. Oops that’s right we only have One loss by three points and only One INT. Maybe GUNNER should have told them to kick the chip shot FG to tie the game. But No I’m sure telling Cash to run in it from behind the LOS was a much better decision. 🙄 Credit and Criticism go hand in hand. Sad that Gunner gets much more of the Criticism part from Some folks.
I actually liked what Kirby said, because it sums up exactly where we are right now — stuck between that old-school, grind-it-out identity that’s made us dominant and the modern need to be more explosive on offense.
He’s not wrong. Explosives, no turnovers, and the middle eight really are the biggest indicators of who wins games. I like that Kirby gets the analytics side but still refuses to give up our physical edge. That toughness is what separates Georgia from most teams, and I don’t want to lose it.
That said, when he says, “we want to be more explosive,” I just wish he’d tell us how. We’ve all seen this offense bog down when we play too safe or can’t hit the deep shots. Finding the balance between that physical style and real explosiveness is going to be the key.
Right now, I feel good, not great, about where we are — elite defense potential, monster lines, tons of talent everywhere. But if we want to stay ahead of Bama, Texas, and Ohio State, we’ve got to start creating more big plays and owning those middle-eight minutes. Kirby knows it — now it’s about actually doing it, not just talking about it.
Bobo was humilated last week, so he should call a better game against Ole Miss.
The problem is that we have a week off before Florida and I can promise you that we will look absolutely awful (rusty, slow, unprepared, lost) in the first half against Florida.
I would like a faster start, not necessarily a fast start, each time…just be consistent. Want to grind? Grind for 4 quarters. Play the game to your ability each quarter. Kirby says the same thing.
