Georgia football final grades following shootout win over Ole Miss

Comments
I am only giving out one grade again this week… HEART…A+
Defense got its arsekicked for 45 minutes and yet, no crying, no panicking, no quit. They are certainly not an elite group but they all carry big axes! Great job persevering boys. Coach Bobo, the Oline, Gunner and company …A frgn +++++
Agree with the grades Connor.
Great to see our O-line come together, excellent use of our TEs, but we've obviously still got work to do on defense, especially in the secondary. But, we ran the ball and mostly stopped the run. The keys for Kirby.
I've had my doubts about Gunner over the first few games, but he keeps bringing this team through tough times. He's missed open receivers, hasn't let plays develop, and made some questionable decisions. BUT, the team loves him, and he played his best game yesterday. He still missed a couple of open guys, but he made better reads and didn't turn the ball over. And the guy is tough as nails! He just doesn't give up. So, kudos to Gunner and his gradual improvements. Hope he keeps this up.
Frazier, Branch, Bowens, Luckie, McCray, the O-line...too many offensive standouts to mention!
Perhaps the biggest run of the day was one of the shortest! Trailing by 9 late in the third quarter, GA went for the first on 4th and 1 at their own 44. Josh McCray was initially stuffed on the play but managed to roll off tackle with a gutsy second effort and pick up the first down. We had yet to stop the Ole Miss offense at that point and who knows how things would have gone if we had turned it over on downs on our side of the 50. McCray is the unsung hero of the game.
"The offense gets an A. The defense, perhaps generously, gets a C."
Offense maybe even an A+ considering we scored every time we had the ball. Great balance of run and pass.
Looks like you left off Josh McCray, but his ability to pick up those 2 yards on 4th and 1 was pretty impressive considering it appeared at first that he would be stopped. Just kept churning those legs and finding a gap.
The Defense gets probably a D+ since for three quarters Ole Miss seemed to gain 1st downs in chunks and score at will.
There were the much needed stops mid 4th qtr. Also, holding the Rebs to 150 yrds less than they normally gain per game may have had more to do with having an advantage in time of possession.
This defense is still a work-in-progress.
Gosh I hate to say this, but I'd take the + off the A for Gunner, and he probably will too after seeing the film… solid A, for sure, but missed/didn't see 3 different receivers who very well might have scored. As he gets even more comfortable back there, his vision will improve… imagine even better than yesterday! Love the kid!
Agree on the D for the Linebackers. Despite his 10 tackles, CJ looked surprisingly slower than usual. The upshot is there's way too much natural talent in that room to be showing up so poorly in first halves the way they have.
Super proud of the overall team resilience and thrilling W. Keep chopping, boys. Go Dawgs!
10 yard cushion by corners was a huge problem.
Can’t argue with any of the grades and overall a great team win against a very good team. The offense was somewhat of a surprise but maybe it shouldn’t have been after what they did against UT. Key difference was this time the DAWGS never got that far behind. Even when down 9 you never really felt like it was getting away and if the D could give 1-2 stops the offense would answer.
So many accolades to give but not enough room. Dillon Bell making 2 awesome catches, TEs doing everything, Frazier has really worked on ball protection and he is very reliable during games now, the O line which has been much maligned this year really rose to the occasion, Stockton who is amazing, Branch who is truly a game changer, and McCray for that unbelievable run for the first down which could be the play of the game (that and the Bell reception in the 4th quarter). What a game and now for a well deserved rest.
Go DAWGS!
Defense gets an A in the 4th quarter. They bent the first three quarters, but didn’t bend at all in the final frame. Our defense couldn’t get sacks because our rushers were either getting held or tackled with absolutely no flags for holding calls at all. Even on the last defensive play of the game with the pass batted down, their O lineman was holding our D lineman’s jersey. The two pass interferences on Robinson were bogus calls. The pass interference on Thomas shouldn’t have been called.
Connor, why don’t you grade the coaches anymore?
Amen !! Agree !! If there were a grade for Heart only, the whole team deserves a A+. Even the Defense as they rose up when it Most counted. And Woodring though shanking the kick offs got the much needed FGs. The SCORE is the Most important Stat of All !! And Dawgs hung a nice shiny W up there. And the Main thing that caused that is just like You pointed out, Heart !! Go Dawgs !!
My only concern with our OL is short yardage situations. Thankfully McCray was his own blocker once again or we probably get beat. Ole Miss scored easily running between the tackles in goal line situations whereas we keep having to have some creative pass play to get into the end zone from inside the five, hard to figure.
Definitely no argument about the DB grade. The DB's need a lot of improvement, especially Ellis Robinson. I think teams now know if you throw it his way, its a 50/50 ball, and a 1st down everytime..its usually either a completion, or a PI call. 2 PI calls on Robinson in 1 Ole miss drive..
That run was sheer heart, and determination, Ole miss had him for a loss but he came through for a very crucial 1st down. That exemplifies this team..no quit in them. They're going to take your best punch, and keep fighting you for 60 minutes.
I would treat the final grade for the defense as a whole. They get an F for the first 3 quarters and an A for the 4th quarter. On a 4 point system, that would create a final grade of 1.75. Because the 4th qtr was most important, I give them a C- as opposed to a D+.
@ Khummel..1 I remember, he had either Delp, or Luckie running down the middle of the field wide open because of a busted coverage by Ole Miss. He had pressure on him, but that was an easy TD if he sees his open TE.
Correction, on a 4 point system, the grade would be a 1.0, but I will fudge with the importance of the 4th quarter to a 1.5 with revised score in letters as D+.
