I give Mike credit for a good game call but still can’t seem to get pass the 4th down play against Bama. I like Cash, gusty player but why is he the 3rd down package? If it’s his blocking ability that’s great but you need a top back in there as your outlet guy. Oh well..Go Dawgs
I don’t blame all the problems of the defense on the defense coordinator. You can only coach a player so much but leaving a guy wild open to outrun the defense for a 75 yd TD shows a lack of something. It’s hard to believe these are top dbacks we have and this is the worst defense I’ve seen in years at Georgia. No pass rush at all. We’ve been burned in the past years but this group acts so lackluster until the 4th quarter…scratching my head. Kirby keeps saying every game.. we got things to fix.. well something not getting fixed.
When you have your corners playing 10 yards off the ball, they will get six yards on first down every time. And they did it almost the whole game. When they choked down to man in the forth quarter, the fun for Ole Miss stopped. Was that a decision to keep Ole Miss number 1 QB on the sideline? I don't know. But wow.
"Beck is a bit of a front-runner. A peacetime consigliere."
Brilliant writing!
that play by Cole reminded me of a similar play way back in seccg against LSU when we had a free blitzing linebacker against burrow. It was a third and long play and the sack would have gotten us the ball back. Our LB came charging in to get the big hit, which burrow simply side stepped. Then ran 20 something yards for a first down and eventual TD. If Cole had slowed just a step or two, he likely catches Chamblis in his move and gets the sack.
I believe Cash is the 3rd down back due to 3rd down generally being a passing down and he makes a pretty good receiver out of the backfield. If you are running 'hurry up' on 4th down there isn't time to sub in. The play was there - the right side of the O-line broke down. Give Jones another second or two to get outside the tackle box and he's in. As far as a top back in there, we had our two top guys in there against mighty Austin Peay and couldn't score from the 1 yard line - twice.
What a game and some awesome and timely plays by so many players. Love how Frazier has bounced back after the fumble and the entire RB room deserves a winner designation. All carried the load great, amassing over 200 yards rushing and a run with pure heart and strength by McCray to really keep the drive alive. Receivers and TEs also showed up and showed out.
One favor to ask - can we please leave all the Beck comments by the wayside? He is gone and all have moved on. Clearly, Stockton fits this team like a glove and we are thankful he stayed and waited, but what Beck does or doesn't do is immaterial. It just seems petulant to play up his poor tendencies (trying to do too much when playing from behind is a classic) or revel in his failures. He was a DGD while here but he is gone and we are riding with Gunner. Love riding with Gunner but my heart may not be able to take too many more games like these.
Rest up DAWGS and get ready to face a very different Florida team on the other side. The firing is at a terrible time and they will be fired up. Gonna need our best to win.
A big part of offensive success Saturday was the extensive use of our TEs. Finally. Thank you Mike Bobo. Don't tell me these guys can't play! We would have had another real big gain on a pass to TE Williams, but we just couldn't quite connect. And I'm loving the way Nate is running the ball. Most of the time he is hugging it like a teddy bear!
The defensive secondary is just not anywhere close to very good or elite. I don't care if we are playing zone or man coverage. That's got to improve or we will get sliced and diced against better receivers. Both Everette and Robinson made some bone headed plays Saturday. Tackling was atrocious for most of the game. Yes, there's work to do on defense, but we were able to stop the run for the most part.
You go back and read or watch the explanation for the 4th down call - Kirby, Lane, Bellamy, etc. If they substitute there to get a "top back" in there, they probably opt to kick the FG. That's fair to argue. But the play they ran had nothing to do with Cash. Two missed blocks by freshman linemen.
Bobo deserves a lot of credit. A good mix of pass (289) and run (221) plays. Execution was there.
Schumann catches heat, but even Kirby doesn't have an answer. The defense did hold Ole Miss to 351 total yards which is well below the average of about 500 yards per game.
"Henddawg"—agree totally. Why don't you sports writers stop comparing Gunner to Beck. He plays for Miami now—he won a lot of games for us—he's not a total flop, he's a good QB—he has never bad mouthed UGA in his life. Your comments about him don't make Gunner better, and they are not a good look.
Agree with all except Mike Bobo and Glen Schumann. Schumann should have been outed as a big loser. His extremely talented group of defensive players let the other team score every time they got the ball until the fourth quarter. That, my friends is a bad joke, unbelievable when you consider the number of 4 and 5-star recruits on the defense. How can you do less with more?
Stockton made Bobo a winner yesterday, but do not call Bobo a winner. I look at Saturday's performance by Bobo under the blind squirrel principle. Yes, a blind squirrel lucks up every once in awhile and finds an acorn. In general, both these coordinators are subpar for the salaries they receive and the amount of money UGA pumps into our football program. Please, Kirby, get better coordinators for us after this season. Yes, you will have to fire them, because no other university is going to offer either of them a job.
I agree, just as bad a look as the one the media placed on Beck for his "throwing his WR under the bus" comment. He's gone, moved on, time for the media to do the same thing.
"Whichever way the wind blows"…that is the only "losers" I see, the bandwagon stuff that is - writers included. Either you are or you ain't a Dawg.
The only winner/s I see are the Dawgs and those that support them.
I think Bobo and Stockton are similar kinds of guys: deep south, low-key, team-first competitors. You could say the same thing about Drew! A much better QB-OC fit than last year and they are getting better each week. Not worried about the offense, although hate it for Colby.
Now, the defense. We are young and confused in the secondary. So simplify. Go man-to-man from the start. 100% of the time in games. 100% of the time in practice. Less need to communicate. Free your mind and focus on just one thing: the man across from you. Step up or get burned. Black and white. I think the guys will step up.
This also frees up more guys to try to get to the QB - which is the real way you improve your pass defense.
Yes, there will be some long completions and some PIs, but if we don't figure out a way to get to the QB, we are toast in the CFP given the quality of QB we will see. And we're getting torched in zone anyway. It feels like "what have we got to lose?" Although I feel for the kid who has to cover Jeremiah Smith.
