Georgia âstop rateâ a red flag Kirby Smart canât ignore
Smart, no doubt, has plenty of film cut-ups to keep his team humble and hungry during the bye week, even as the fan base rallies around another top 5 ranking and marquee victory.

Could be Kirby and crews best coaching job to date. When all is considered, thinks it has been very impressive.
Eastmandawg, I totally agree. Best coaching job. Super young and little experience, but still 3 pts from being undefeated. Long way to go, but I do think they are improving every game. No doubt they are missing that edge pressure, but they are fighting hard. I believe that our db's have higher upsides than years past, which will really help.
you are right. amazing job with this young team
The statistics are interesting. However, the question is “Who have you been stopping at that rate?”
Starting fast is the best way to make sure you're not playing catch-up the entire 2nd half when you may or may not be able to do so. We're a resilient, gritty bunch, but against the best teams will that be enough? We honestly may not know the answer to that until we get to the playoffs based on who we've got left on the schedule. I'm not discounting what Texas can put together, but GT may be our toughest game left in the regular season.
Speaking of "Stop rates", last season, Ohio State finished No. 1 in this metric with a stop rate of 78.5% against FBS opponents over its 16-game season. The Buckeyes are back on top under new defensive coordinator Matt Patricia with a stop rate of 84.2% and also have the No. 1 points per drive average (0.72) in FBS. Bama is #16 with a Stop Rate of 72.3%, and remember, those guys have also played (4) ranked teams thus far. Oregon and Indiana sit at # 8 & #9 with stop rates of 76.8% and 75.8%.
We should keep improving, so I'm optimistic going forward if we can continue to start fast.
That's a really good point, and would have been a great add to this very good, data-driven article. That said, I still have one reaction to the stats MG posted: uh-oh…😦 Again, it's the D-line and LBs that look to be the most likely factor for either making or breaking the Dawg's remaining 2025 season. At least Kirby and co. know where to focus most!
I can’t tell you how many hours of UGA football I’ve seen the past 50+ years and I’ve never seen a UGA defense look so inept at stopping the other team. Kirby is supposed to be the best defensive coach in America. Something doesn’t add up. Young team or not. Where does the ole saying coach them up apply?
if this if that don't mean squat. They're 6 and 1. Point blank.
Intestinal Fortitude - Dawgs #1
I think Kirby has the defense looking much different come time to resume play. D. Jones looked like the light came on for him in the second half of Ole Miss. The D line will appear stiffer, and the tackling will be better. These young pups have some game experience against a pretty tough schedule so far. The Dawgs are looking as anyone else right now in their position.
If our defense stays as porous as it has been thus far, I don't think we can play with the Big Boys come playoff time. I think we are better than at the start of the season, but so is everybody else.
I’m thoroughly delighted to be 6-1! Knowing it could just as easily be 3-4! But I would garauntee you this defense has set records for not being able to get off the field on 3rd downs.
Here’s a thought I’ve been pondering. We all know we are a young, inexperienced team. But as I go back to high school in my mind, I remember being inexperienced when the season started, but somewhere around the 4th or 5th game everything sort of comes together. The game slowed down. Reaction time improved. Anticipating plays became easier. Surely after 7 games, presumably with much better coaching than most of us got in high school, these young players should no longer be a liability. They have 7 games under their belts. It’s surprising to me that the D has seemingly gotten worse as the season has progressed. It’s disconcerting.
Looks like a case of through out the stats and measure the heart . Speaking of heart mine gets a workout watching these Dawgs .
