What Kirby Smart knew Georgia needed this season, and when he demanded it
ATHENS â Kirby Smart doesnât spend time patting himself on the back, but his teamâs growth this season illustrated part of what separates him among head coaches.

Did the emphasis on stopping the run lead to so many breakdowns in the pass defense early in the season? And I wonder what Georgia did to address that later in the season? Because they certainly improved.
I think the freshmen grew up after the Alabama game. You could really see it against Mississippi State and Ole Miss ahead of the Texas game.
Your point is valid, though. It took Ellis Robinson a while to come around, but I know a previous doubter who is thoroughly impressed.
I'm not one to doubt Kirby, and what he said is valid. But, in my opinion, the biggest difference in this team from last year is Gunner Stockton at QB rather than Carson Beck. I don't believe folks understand how much Beck's attitude weighed down the 2024 club. People will say, "well, Beck's receivers led the nation in drops." That's true. But Beck, unlike Stockton, was not one to pick up his teammates. When they dropped passes, he showed his disappointment and displeasure. They knew it and it added more pressure. It's hard to explain unless you know some of the things that went on with Beck last year, but this entire team is A LOT MORE connected, and it starts at the QB position.
Yup, going from 36th in rushing defense to 4th is on QB Carson Beck. SMH.
IF the QB has that much impact on a CFB team tells me the coaches aren't having the appropriate impact on their position groups.
Sounds like the point of this article is to emphasize the improvements that resulted from the coaching changes.
