Nice writeup. Thanks!
Nice assessment but You left one category out…
Coaching - question mark? Can offensive creativity and defensive adjustments step up a notch? If so we’ll be fine
Comprehensive yet succinct analysis. We'll also miss Thor's sense of humor. Go Dawgs!
@Gramster Eh? UGA's offense was plenty creative last season. They masked the fact that UGA had absolutely no viable players at X and Y receiver - especially when Colbie Young got hurt - and no RBs who had an extra wiggle or gear to take it the distance when they hit the second level. So they created a scheme designed entirely around quick screen passes to guys with varying slot WR skills led by Zachariah Branch, short and intermediate distance running plays, Stockton scrambling to move the sticks, and to top it off a ton of playing time given to a couple of TEs who defenses knew were only capable of blocking smaller guys downfield and can't get open without the weapons at WR and RB that UGA lacks making plays for them. In my 40+ years of watching college and NFL football I had never seen anything like it. I am astounded that UGA won so many games and scored so many points in the process without a 3000 yard passer, 1000 yard rusher or an X or Y WR to reach 400 yards or TE to reach 300 despite UGA playing 14 games. The offense even scored 27 points in the playoff game, which would have been enough if the defense was as good as it was 2021-2024.
I will say it again: put a Jordan Davis, Jalen Carter or Travon Walker on the 2025 UGA defense and UGA beats Ole Miss and Miami with a WR depth chart that is worse than those at a lot of G5 schools, complementary players at RB and a TE room with guys who can't do what TEs in most football programs are expected to do: block at the line of scrimmage.
Instead of wishing for playcalling and gameplanning that gets even more out of UGA's substandard players on offense, why not ask for better players on offense? Yet another NFL draft is going to go by with UGA WRs, RBs and TEs being pretty much non-factors. Even more so with the guys that Smart recruited as Dom Lovett, Trevor Etienne and now Zachariah Branch came from the portal. UGA is the only fanbase on the planet that scapegoats the offensive staff for failing to win with subpar players instead of asking why UGA's head coach has gone 10 years without recruiting a single first round pick at RB or WR when the teams that UGA is competing with often have multiple high picks at those positions in a single draft.
If anything it means, for example, that Bobo and company are better than the guys at Ohio State. The Buckeyes had a pair of future 1st round pick WRs, a Heisman candidate QB and a freshman All-American 1000 yard rushing tailback and won even fewer games than UGA did despite having a much statistically better defense. Texas? Same. All those 4 and 5 star recruits and NIL purchases at QB, WR, RB and TE and they only score 7 against Ohio State and couldn't put enough points on the board to beat 4-8 Florida.
Most UGA fans dream about Bobo taking a QB coaching job with the Rams with Stafford and Bennett IV so UGA can bring Monken back. My dream is for Smart to give Bobo the same talented offensive team to work with that Monken had 2020-2022.
As for Stockton, when I said that UGA didn't have an intermediate or downfield passing game it was no knock on Stockton's arm or accuracy. Instead, give Stockton the 2021-2022 roster - Bowers, Cook, McConkey, Mitchell, Washington, McIntosh, White, Edwards, Pickens - and UGA does just fine in that area. Stockton just doesn't have the NFL arm to throw guys open or the accuracy/timing to get it to a covered receiver in a spot where the WR can get it but the defender can't. Beck could do the former which is how Dillon Bell and Dom Lovett combined for nearly 1100 yards in 2024. Aaron Murray was the last UGA QB capable of the latter and you would have needed a guy like that to make Delp and Luckie productive with UGA's RBs and WRs. But Bennett would have had no chance with the supporting cast that Stockton had this year. Bennett had a better supporting cast in 2020 and got benched after having more turnovers than TDs. And yes Monken was the OC that year too.
@randomsportsfan you certainly use a lot of words to say IF. BTW Todd just got hired for an NFL HBC position in Cleveland. I guess the pro’s are high on him even if you aren’t.
