Why do we even have scholarships anymore? What's the point of them since all the players are basically getting paid to play now and can easily afford tuition and room and board.

Most of these kids will never even crack the door to the NFL but if they are really good HS players then some college team will offer them the chance of a lifetime to earn a really good 4 yr. slary and a free education. A kid may very well grow up wanting to play for his in state school but they get a better job offer somewhere else(NIL) . Say, 4 years@150K vs. 4 years @200K . Do the math! 200K difference! You'll have a hard time convincing mom, dad, or whomever to forfeit that to stay in state for sentimental reasons. ANd with the elite players the differences in a NIL deal between schools competing for his services could add up to millions over 3-4 years.

I think the great equalizer over amassing 4 and 5 star recruits is having a roster full of experienced older players(Indiana this year and Michhigan a couple of years ago).who maybe were a lower star when they came out of HS but have gained 2-3 years of playing experience in college and have more of a track record and won't need to sit through 1-2 years on the bench in order to be able to contribute.

Someone said the average age of Indiana players this season was 23. Picture a 19-20 year old OL versus a 23 year old DL! Yikes! SB was 24 and 25 when he led UGA to back to back NC'S! No way he does that at 19-20.

JS did an excellent article a little while ago about UGA and retaining our young players and it's only somehwere around 30% the past few years. So, despite Kirby's best efforts to preach team chemistry(culture) and developing, 7 out of 10 players don't see it that way, they leave for what they perceive as either more money, or more playing time, or both.

    I wish it was different.

I agree with Kirby's "package" approach, versus depending on being biggest payer. I know comparing college football to the traditional business world is a bit apples to oranges, but companies with very competitive (but not necessarily top) salaries PLUS an incredible culture that is fun and you can be proud of PLUS an environment where you can truly learn and grow are able to out-recruit companies that don't emphasize the former two elements and are all about the money (especially with young talent). In fact, A-players are looking for and expecting that combo. The only caveat is the vast majority will never play pro ball, so this is their only chance to make money playing football before they change careers. But I think the overall philosophy still holds. Go Dawgs!

Are these NIL deals a binding contract? If they are not, they should be. I believe an NIL contract should contain deliverables from the athlete and protections for the schools' investment. If an athlete wants out of their contract to transfer to another school, he should have to navigate the provisions of the contract for doing so. If an athlete can simply collect a check, wait for the next TP window, and move on to the next highest bidder without consequence, that's not sustainable and has to change.

I may be wrong, but I believe they have to be employees of the school for the contracts to be enforceable - which would be different "can of worms" for the university (expenses/insurance etc.).

I was never against players getting a reasonable stipend along with a free scholly and other benefits. But the nearly unlimited NIL has destroyed the game as we knew it.

But it’s here in full force. So all Kirby can do is Try to get the best players he can whether from Ga. or other states. Get the best he can out of HS using building them for the NFL as his sales pitch.

I Know this year is not a good example of sending guys to the NFL. But Plenty of previous years even very recent ones Are. Then wade into the TP and get the best he can to supplement. There’s not much more he Can do in terms of getting guys on campus. Then Coach Em Up !!

These days $$ is King !! That’s why I’ve been preaching don’t so quickly discard last season !! It IS Definitely gonna get harder and harder to Win at Elite levels in CFB !! It’s Not who’s necessarily the best coach anymore it’s Who can buy the best players. For those players who commit to UGA and Stay for 4 maybe even 4+ years we should salute them and call them DGDs !!

Its not that fhey.afe notenforceable m, but that the language doesnt make the contrats straight forward and there isbt much to any legal precedent sonno telling what happens in court. Its your point about being employees that makes the contracts less direct. Because the schools dont want to classify then as employees and bc college is "still technically not pay to play" the contracts typically say some version of they are paying tbe playerz for their NIL rights. Not that they are there to play football. So when they break them and dip if u go to court who knows what will happen (schools probably lose bc its also the cool trendy verdict to keep giving it to the ncaa). Its all so garbage. Im not against guys getting paid, but it was the affiliation or them being students and school teams that connects the majority of the fan base and made the game special . Now we see it being pushed further and further in all directions every one making the game worse in some way or form. At some poibt it seems the idea of what college used fo be and how it was great and why and maintaining that has veen completely forgotten. Or lost and it is solely looked at from a school make money school didnt give player money, school bad. Game should have paid and then eveybother change except for stopping at a point that makes sense abd is reasonable they just kept moving the bar all the way into **** dumb or the same level of wrong it was supposedly in and needed change from , just on the opposute side of who has advantage. Yeah thats what everyone wants except maybe playedz or so it seems. Unfortunatel6 it isnt that straight foreard or easy a fix. With so many court rulings and precedent estabkish3d thru law suits it makes ut almost impossible to enforce keeping a guy as well as the language in the contracta doesnt state they are being paid for football bc the schools don't want them to be employees and college is still technically not completely pay to play. Sure there are other things to. Essentially everything is stuck in a half measure or there is a barrier preventing the solution from taking place and things are only getting worse m
