“Where we are right now with 12 teams (in the playoff), I don’t necessarily agree that it needs to quit being played,” Smart told Low. “But if it gets to 16 or 24 and we’ve got to move the end of the season up and we’ve got to get everything done by the second week of January, then I’d say it probably has to go.

All Power 4 conferences need to play 9 conference games AND another Power 4 team every season. We need to make this a level playing field.
Another thing that would help with level playing fields is cut conferences back down to 10 teams. You play EVERY team EVERY year as your conference games.

Currently we have 17 ACC teams, 16 BIG12 teams, 16 SEC Teams, and 18 BIG10 Teams. That's 67 teams. Make ND join a conference and find 2 more teams to be in Power conference (well one more since we can add Oregon St and Washington State back). That leaves one team. UConn is the other Independent team besides ND. Add them. that gives you 70 teams. 7 Power conference based on geography, like they used to be.

The SEC Championship Game is one of the greatest things in all of collegiate sports IMO, would hate to see it eliminated.

Problem is all good things must come to an end at the rate we're going. 16 teams is inevitable and that means 4 more games. It penalizes teams playing in the SEC. But I agree I hate to see it go.

it will never be a level playing field since each conference has its own priorities and each school has its own priorities. The greatness of college football as we have known it for over a hundred years has been the fact that it was a regional sport. The expansion of conferences and the playoffs is attempting to make a regional sport into a national sport like the NFL. The problem is the NFL model has only thirty-two teams and thirty-two owners with the same goals - make money and win a championship. The colleges are run by presidents who have other priorities besides football and sports. In addition, the vast majority of schools don’t make money on sports. Even schools in the same conferences don’t have the same priority when it comes to investing and emphasizing sports. Some schools and their boosters will always be more concerned with their medical school, engineering school or business school than football and a forty thousand seat stadium will serve their purposes, Vanderbilt, Miss St., UK in the SEC, Northwestern, Rutgers and Purdue in the Big 10 etc, etc. I love college football, but I understand the CFP champion is in many ways scripted for television and just a step above the old mythical champions.

NCAA needs to step up for once and set the leagues. Texas and Oklahoma need to go back to a mid west conference, and we need to dial down the number of games. Notre Dame should give up football or be forced into a league.
