If you think the problem is bad now, think about the future. In the past, Alabama and Georgia just stacked 5 stars like cord wood. Now, even Vandy can out-purchase UGA for a 5 star. Nebraska even ponied up the money for Rayola, and of course he got hurt and ruined because they didn't have the offensive line, just like we all said. Georgia isn't going to get the kids it had in the last 7 years. Kirby can talk all he wants about getting the kids that want to be at Georgia, but the reason Saban won so much was the level of talent he recruited 3 deep on the depth chart. Who wins on any given day will become a crap shoot.
18 year olds will take best offer they get. I can't blame them, if you watch the career of Carson Beck, I'd be willing to bet he's made his money. The NFL will never pay him like he was paid in College. He's not a winner.
Lacking backup WRs and QBs. Not a surprise. Kirby will get his next starting QB from the portal and more WRs.
And if we can produce a consistent pass rush then I won't worry too much about tbe secondary.
"If you wanna play, you gotta pay…". Evidently, UGA isn't willing…
@jdatl3…yes, you know it would be interesting to see how Saban would be doing now on the recruiting and NIL front if he had stayed as HC of Bama. His reputation would have probably allowed Bama to remain a bigger contender than they are currently under DeBoer, but you know he would be struggling like Kirby to balance money with the needs of the program.
MontanaDawg - totally agree. I think Saban saw this coming and got out. I was about to say Bama doesn't have that kind of money, but truth be told, who does? How long can Miami go fire-hosing money? Sooner or later, those boosters will wake up and look at their bank accounts. The problem is, there will always be a university somewhere who splurge on a Five star.
Georgia doesn’t seem to have a billionaire booster to pour money in for NIL like Miami, Texas Tech, Michigan or Indiana. Or oil money like Texas. Kirby’s apparent strategy of signing kids who aren’t chasing the dollar but who want to be there to develop seems to be the most practical. Then put the financial resources toward retention of the kids who earn it to build an older, more mature and experienced roster.
Well, they had the #2 class last year, so even without Saben they do quite well. They do this in this class and it looks bad for Kirby.
@RedUga4Ever…only thing is that DeBoer hasn't produced truly competitive teams - even with top recruiting classes. I like DeBoer, but he sure hasn't produced a dominating Bama team so far. They have gotten spanked by some competition. I think Kirby has definitely done better even with a bit of a drop in our recruiting class. We just got to get over the CFP 1st Round hump…this season for sure.
Georgia is 8th in revenue production and has the best coach in the country in Kirby Smart — so there’s really no excuse for falling short of perennial contender status. With that combination of money, infrastructure, recruiting power, and coaching, Georgia should be in the national championship conversation every year.
If we win it all, yes, that’s an exceptional season. But if we’re not consistently knocking on the door, then something is underperforming. At this level, “good” isn’t good enough anymore.
BUT! If we can’t win a first round playoff game we will lose our relevance.
