Mantle talked a lot about following DiMaggio and how tough that was on him in interviews.
He had the number 6 when he first came up. Ruth was #3. Gehrig #4. DiMaggio #5. So the implecation was clear. He was going to follow in their footsteps.
He switched to #7 after struggling with #6 and all that weight on him early in his career. And then of course took off and became a legendary player.
Others mentioned his knee injuries which did limit his career I wasn't implying it was all about the drinking. Neither helped him and limited his numbers a good bit.
Finally, the Braves got a win. Good pitching and enough hitting. Good to see Waldrep back and, hopefully, ready to help out. Top of the batting order was pretty good last night. A 3-1 win.
Fuentes has a special arm. Comes in for Dodd in the 8th and blows his guy away with three pitches all fastballs. Almost like he could have told the guy what was coming. Gas.
Will be very interesting to see if the Braves are committed to him being a starter. Or if post Strider they think more about his future as a closer.
I wonder if starters have longer careers, on average, over closers. He is SO young. I hope they choose wisely. My wish is for him to start, somewhere along the line.
Would prefer him starting too as would the Braves I think.
He is the first special arm developed since Strider. And we see what happened to Strider. Fuentes is a totally different guy and you cant base every decision on Striders demise. So yeah I think his future is up in the air.
He reminds me a little of Smoltz. With maybe a few more mph on the heater. Super smooth and athletic looking thru the windup. Finishes strong. Never flying all over the place or off balance. Swing and miss stuff.
His career is worth watching.
Another 1-hit performance by the Braves hitters. Happened vs. the Nationals too.
Hard to watch. Baseball isn't supposed to look like this, is it?
being a closer always sounds cool until it’s the 9th and your team is losing
I think this is officially a "slump" now - our 10 game lead is down to 4 now and it's not even the All-Star break yet. We seem to have forgotten how to hit, Elder seems (again) to have forgotten how to pitch. I hope we have hit rock bottom now and can begin to bounce back. It would be a great time to take some Neuriva and remember how we were playing. Sale is on the mound, although his lawyer is busy suing the Braves for non-support. Maybe he can inspire our hitters a little bit. Fingers crossed. Where in the world is Ronald. He is becoming the Joel Embid of baseball.
There was a time when the Marlins were begging us to take Realmuto and Yelich for Ronald. Hard to process how long ago that was. I've enjoyed Ronald being a Brave, and glad we've experienced the Albies and Acuna fun!
Indeed, he is fun to watch. When healthy, one of the best around. Just want to see more of him.
Braves bats are on a vacation for two weeks now. They saw that Riley was having so much fun in the Bahamas since April that they all would like to join in the hoopla!
Riley is the lead bat in the Conga line lol!
Actually, Ha-Seong Kim is in the lead with Riley right behind him.
Sale lowers his ERA and strikes out 10 in 6 innings and can't get the win. Unbelievable. We apparently only have 7 bats on the club. Riley and Kim seem out of their element, whatever that element might be. Our lead could be down to 3 if Philly won today.
Weiss is facing his first true test of adversity. Curious to see how he responds and reacts.
Right now would be a good time for AA to help him out with some GM magic!
Releasing Kim would be 1st step, hard to simply write off 20 million. I don't believe he has made hard contact when he seldom makes contact.
