Stockton’s INT was a tipped pass. We were playing probably the best defense we’ll see all season. Yes, there are still things to clean up, but we got a huge win. Don’t be so negative Connor.
Yes, Yes, and Yes !! Always things to be worked on. But this was a Very solid win against an OU team with a formidable defense. OU wanted to redeem themselves in the worse way at our Dawgs cost. Didn’t happen. So Yes there’s work to be done. But this was a very Nice win vs another SEC opponent !! Go Dawgs !!
To Really work on deep passes you need to Attempt them in Real games. Need Gunner to have a chemistry with at least one guy for deep throws.
So in the first half we used the TE’s more. And ran the ball. Got the score up high Thx in large part to our Defense. So good time to work on deep throws.
There Will be misses and there Will be INT’s on those type throws. It’s the inherit risk that comes with those type throws. But if you rarely work on them in Real games then you can’t refine them to get better.
Of Course we should use the big TEs !! That’s a known commodity. BUT we also need to have a deep threat. As the season goes on running the ball and throwing screen passes to the TEs will only have limited success. We Need a chemistry between Taylor and Gunner. Ideally we need even another deep threat guy or Two for a total of total of Three !! That would be Great !!
Don’t get me wrong we Can win games with running the ball, screen passes to TEs, short to intermediate passes over the middle and the occasional designed runs from Gunner. BUT as we face tougher teams it will be much better if we have a deep threat guy.
This is what Numerous Dawgs fans have been calling for !! But I caution you there Will be some growing pains !! But the Rewards in the Long Run will out weigh the risks. Go Dawgs !!
TE as a group had 3 catches, pretty sorry. Bobo needs to do better, we have an experienced QB and the second half was flat out sorry! If Oklahoma didn't turn the ball over so many times it's a different game!
Alabama, Florida, and Ole Miss. Those games will tell the tale.
What you said there is correct and true. No argument. STILL we were up by a solid score much to the compliments of the defense. Dawgs fans near constantly complain about the lack of deep passes. Well what better time to work on them in a Real Game than like today ?
This game helped I believe, Taylor and Gunner to develop an In Game chemistry. Gunner hit on four deep throws today. And missed I think on three to four. We all Know what the TEs can do. So does CMB. But we’re not gonna be able to defeat the High Profile teams on screen passes and running the ball.
If you’re saying more deep passes to TEs like Redell and Williams I’m all for that !! But we Do need a deep threat right ? You can’t simulate closely enough in practices as compared to Real Games. Especially vs a legit defense like OU. So even with the misses I think it was a Good thing to make the deep throw attempts.
What baffled me was the running Gunner plays that OU read like a book !! And almost got Gunner injured !! Gunner Needs opportunities to throw deep passes as often as they present themselves in my view. Had we stuck to All screen passes Gunner’s completion to attempt ratio would probably have been better. And probably had more yds. incrementally. But will that Really make us better for the up coming Big games ?
Reddell needs the ball more. He has shown flashes that are Bowers like. Bobo needs to use the TEs the way Monken did.
Though I fully agree with you and @Draftpick01 . My Hope is that once the Dawgs got the solid lead he was Experimenting with the deep passes. We must remember Gunner did in fact connect on four if my memory serves. But Yes he did also miss on three to four. You can’t become an expert knife thrower unless you throw the knife !!
That said in a tight game NO !! No experimenting !! I’m not inside CMB’s head. So I Hope that’s what he was doing. In a tight game I’d want him to Use those big TEs coupled with running the ball.
Throw deep passes to Reddell and Williams !! But Gunner Needs the practice in Real games as much as possible Without jeopardizing the game much. That’s all I’m trying to say.
We’re gonna need all the weapons we can vs. the more competitive teams on our schedule !! It looks like All the SEC teams have improved to some degree.
