Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton is turning NFL scouts' heads while growing his legend under the direction of UGA offensive coordinator and former Bulldogs QB Mike Bobo.

I’m a Gunner fan, but all the media puts the hype on a QB. Without the OL,RB and WR ,a QB is worthless. When a QB wins a Hiesman joke trophy no one remembers who got him there. Also, yes he brought us back against Tennessee and Auburn but you fail to mention we lose the game if the kicker hits the FG . The Auburn game even without the fumble could have went either way. Give some love to the team and not one player. Gunner didn’t hold bama to just 3 pts in the 2nd half, it was the D. I guess my comment is about team and and not one player who by himseis useless. Go dawgs and win the state of Alabama.
"Still, few analysts saw Stockton’s greatness at the collegiate level coming when one considers his 4-star, No. 7 rating among quarterbacks in the 2022 class."
He doesn't fit the prototype of the CFB quarterback for this generation, but neither did Stetson Bennett. He is, however, being developed and allowed himself to be developed. That's what happens to players who come to UGA and join the football program and buy into the work plan. If a player considers coming to UGA, but insists upon immediate playing time without having to compete for it, then they are definitely a better fit for some other program. If they are gifted with talent and tools, and have the desire to improve with a 5-star work ethic, UGA is the right program for that player. I hope the guys behind him understand this concept and will trust the process.
GO DAWGS!
A great coach will give a kid time to learn to make the throws. So many five stars aren't given any time. Of course, they desperately want to play right away, and they will even take lesser schools like Vanderbilt to get in early. But, even the best need time. In a society that hates rules, the thing that get's lost is the time to grow. Kids are affected by the media. Big mouth media guys act like they know, and it doesn't matter how many times Herbstreit is wrong, they just keep letting him mouth off. Gunner was given time under a great QB coach. Now, people are taking notice. And if he makes one mistake, those big mouth media types will say, see, told you so. But the powers that be at the NFL level will watch much harder now.
GoodOLDawg"—very nicely put—"understand the concept and trust the process". We can always hope these gifted athletes we recruit can have the foresight to see this.
This story is at least third hand, so take it with a grain of salt but think it deserves to be heard. A classmate of my cousin works for a firm in Atlanta that helps college athletes manaage their NIL money, UGA athletes specifically. Supposedly when they were working with Gunner and wrapping things up, Gunner was asked "Is there anything you want to get right now?" Gunners reply:
"Yes sir, I'd like eight breeding heifers"
I think Carson Beck's response (along with most athletes' response) was quite different…
I can think of several one-liners, and none of them are appropriate for this platform…………..
Fair and balanced article by MG. I am guessing he is trying to avoid the blowback that he encountered by UGA fans for some of his critical (but fairly objective) reporting on SBIV.
MG spells out the book on GS to date. "great college QB". "Doesn't have an NFL grade". "made the sort of throws pro quarterbacks make that he hadn’t made before." “But there’s still a lot of room for improvement", Bobo. What Bobo is talking about specifically here is decision making, seeing the field, throwing down field and throwing the ball accurately.
Starting to see GS's knowledge of the O, accuracy and decision making improved over '25. GS's last 2 games have been his best in 28 games played at UGA. That is a good trend. For UGA to win the championship this season, GS will have to consistently play at this level. The last 2 games gives UGA fans reason to believe he can. GS's ceiling is UGA's ceiling.
For his first year as the true starter I thought GS had a very good year Last year. Not breath taking great, but very good. Prior to that vs ND who did have a pretty good defense, GS was green as grass. So I don’t give him much grief for that loss.
Practices “in the system” do have value but it’s limited because your practicing against the Same guys every day and you get to know their tendencies. And as QB they sure get to know yours to ! Nothing in practice can match playing a competitive team in a Real game. These things said GS is getting better and better every game he plays. Perfect ? NO. But every start he’s departing Very Good and inching toward Great. His confidence in himself, his O Line, his pass catchers be it WRs or TEs ( love to see more TEs) is getting better. He doesn’t tuck the ball and run nearly as much as in the past. He’s throwing more passes over the middle than in the past. He Can and Has made the deep passes Dawgs fans have longed for.
Time will tell but he Might have faced the best defense he’s faced or will face this past Sat. We’ll see on that. But here’s the #1 thing of all. His teammates Love him and will play their hearts out in support of him !! THEY have earned and deserve much praise !! But that comes from the respect they have for Gunner willing to place his body in harm ‘s way and that he’s doing his all to get the Win.
For Gunner’s sake I hope he does really well in the NFL draft when his time comes. But selfishly for me, I’m not an NFL fan. I want and hope he will do great for our Dawgs. With Gunner’s personality being like it is I doubt he thinks about Heisman awards much. No his eyes are on helping his team win a National Title.
To the best of my knowledge I’ve never heard him even close to bragging on himself. But I have heard him brag on his teammates numerous times. Gunner might not have the Hollywood glitz appeal that some QBs in CFB have. But I’m So glad he’s a Dawg and the starting QB for our Dawgs. I Believe he will lead our Dawgs a long, long way, perhaps even a Ntl. Title. And as a Dawgs fan his very best is all I could ask for. Go Dawgs !! Go Gunner !!
Having grown up on my parent’s farm and cattle being part of it. I can tell you from the pictures he’s shared. Gunner has some Beautiful cattle. Gold walking around on four hooves !!
Black Angus beef is extremely expensive !! It’s the carte blanche of beef !! I don’t know for sure but I don’t think Gunner has any mixed breed cattle, it’s all pedigree Black Angus. Even waaaaay back in my day they were expensive. My Daddy was so proud of a Black Angus bull he got. But our cattle were mixed breed, we was po folks Lol !!
Very good beef but Black Angus that are grain fed allot are the primo of beef !! Gunner wants the gift that with proper management keeps on giving !! Wish I had the $$ to be a partner with him !! P.S. My older brother at 73 yrs. old is still raising cattle on the old family farm. But I can’t talk him out of any steaks !! 🤣
Great comments !! Totally agree !! Having a golden arm is a great thing. But you’ve gotta have it between the ears too . Gunner has toughness, great leadership abilities, and the between the ears intelligence. Kirby has said those same things a lot of times.
Can Gunner get better ? Of course !! Does he Need to get better ? Of course ! But there’s allot to be said about the value of Humility. That’s a personality trait. Gunner has that. Kirby has been saying over and over and rightly so. Humility is only a week away.
Big media types don’t care to much for people like Gunner. They didn’t like Stetson but he Made them eat it. They like the glitzy, Hollywood shiny types. NOT ole country boys from the sticks. Both Stetson and Gunner are ole country boys from the sticks. To big media they seem like country hicks. So there’s a built in animosity there that big media try’s really hard to camouflage. But all you have to do is watch and listen.
I muted my TV very early in the first qtr. because the Bias from Kirk and Chris pulling for Bama was So raw and open I thought I’d puke !! They LOVE Bama and don’t even Try to hide it. And though it’s legal I have a big problem stuck in my craw with Nick Saban drawing $500K a year from Bama as an “advisor”. And being on the ESPN panel at the same time !! It might be legally right but it seems morally wrong to me .
ESPN worships Saban almost like he’s a god !! So I rarely watch them. And any time Bama loses it’s a good day. Unless their winning or losing has a direct effect on our Dawgs !!
On being asked how he handles the pressure, Gunner says:
“I look to the sideline to get to the next play,” Stockton said. “and just try to get the play and get to the next moment.
“I just try to be calm in the chaos.”
Gunner is the man!!
Nuff said!
Go Dawgs!
Black Angus is where the moneys at. With the ever-diminishing numbers of small farms, beef prices are really going up. As a kid who grew up on a cattle farm, I remember my parents getting less than $1 per pound at the sale barn. My how times have changed. So many farms are now subdivisions - gone with the wind…
Here's hoping Gunner always has a farm!
Gunner may not have NFL draft potential but I would not trade him for any other college QB in the country. I do hope, for his sake, that the NFL actually starts to take notice.
"Calm in the Chaos"... title of Gunner's memoirs!
We keep saying Gunner was throwing in some tight windows. Not true. Some of throws could fit through a key hole.
