Concerning the punt returns - Sacovie needs to be a little more aggressive and think less. He seems to get caught in no man's land when it comes to decisions. Many of us probably saw the muff before it happened because his body language showed panic after the ball landed and it looked like it might get downed well inside the 10. The best punt returners are great at running up and catching balls before they have a chance to bounce and become an adventure, or if they absolutely can't catch it, they make better decisions when it lands.
Disagree about special teams. Maybe we should, you know, consider what the coach said…
Ok but we rushed Stockton back into the Auburn game after Pug started off well, which signaled that KS believes there’s a big drop off in QB play and that we need Stockton in the game to win and yet we’re using him as a battering ram. He’s going to get hurt if we keep it up like that.
I know Gunner is the absolute team oriented QB. I am disturbed in seeing one of his end zone throws showing the past tendency to do a protracted wind-up motion. He worked on that this summer and revealed a much quicker release against Alabama. For us to win out, he will have to make more down the middle throws with quick decisions and release. On a positive note on him competitiveness, I was awed by his actions after Talyn Taylor had the fumble at Florida's 11 yard line. Gunner was actually on his knees when the Florida defensive back charged down the field with the fumble. Gunner immediately got up and gave chase. Other Dawgs were also involved in the pursuit, but it was Gunner who managed to swipe the Gator down. That's one I would put in our catalog of great moments in the GA-FLA rivalry.
When is the best time to throw a deep pass?
After a long run.
Yet
We chose to run the ball 80% of the time after a long run. We did throw on 12 yd pass to a back after one of our 12 long runs.
Because of this, Florida had the benefit of scheming for a run after every long run.
That's predictable Bobo ball.
If it was predictable - let's say it was - it still worked so who cares?
Why not assume Kirby & Company know what they're doing, have information to which we do not have access, came up with a game plan designed to win the game, and coached the team to execute well.
Go, Dawgs!
Quit taking the fun out of our second guessing (predicting) the coaching staff, Jim.
I’ve posted this on other threads and I believe it to be truth. UF beat Ole Miss by running the ball with Baugh. If they could do that our Dawgs can do as good or Better with Phillips, Frazier, Walker and might have Bowens back.
Gunner needs to complete short to intermediate passes Over The Middle. NOT all screen passes as we’ve seen. The combination of Phillips speed coupled with Frazier and Walker and possibly Bowens pounding the ball. Mixed in with the short to intermediate passes will gas and weary the Ole Miss defense. Plus it will keep Chambliss on the sideline.
When say Dandridge gets wide open deep down field sure throw the bomb to him. But stay away from the Contested deep passes that could result in a pick 6 or giving Ole Miss great field position. We don’t want to Help them.
I know many Dawgs fans want more deep shots. That’s fine. But make them when Dandridge or maybe Taylor has got good separation on the defender. Use our big TEs for short to intermediate passes over the middle and on the boundaries. Knock off the horizontal screen passes Please !
Depending on the defensive lineup of the rival an occasional toss back to Phillips is OK. And when plays break down Gunner can run and should Slide to safety. He needs to stop taking on the defenders as he could get hurt and would then be of no further use. It might not be as magnificent as an arial display but Run, Run, Run the ball vs Ole Miss !! That seems to be their Achilles heel !! Getting the W is much more important than How. Go Dawgs !! Just my humble opinions but I’m basing them on the 52-27 score that UF that we just beat laid on Ole Miss.
That's pretty much how I see it, too.
Our defense has to bring its A Game too of course.
Coaches can't allow the team, or maybe it's can't instruct the team, to go into a shut down mode, a take their foot off the gas mode, a playing not to lose mode. They just can't. Ole Miss is too capable to turning on an explosive scoring streak. We have to continue adding points. No, I'm not saying an anaconda is off limits, but even an anaconda needs to eat what it kills and it can't just kill the clock.
We can't peter out in the red zone. We got to score touchdowns when we're in position to do so.
It would help a lot if we can go up early which will require stopping their drives, but we can't go up and take our foot off the pedal.
I expect a very helpful aggressive defense from the Dawgs. Helpful to the win. Helpful to the offense.
Then every other team on their schedule shut down Baugh and that's when they collapsed. We held Baugh to 38 yards. He had 142 against Ole Miss. Says it all.
Also, go back to Gunner's Alabama game. He had a number of contested downfield completions. That's why we all felt we had a Heisman contender in Gunner. The kid can throw the ball with accuracy—he threaded the needle several times.
True. But you can’t discount Dwight Phillips 120 yds. Rushing either. And I don’t know what yardage our other RBs got. I think it really boils down to what team you’re facing. In one scenario the best route might be to fling the ball deep as you suggest. In another it might be to run the ball more. Can we agree on that ?
The good news is that Bobo has achieved a higher level of red zone performance this year. We're right at 79% TD conversions. OM is at 81%.
Yep. One thing we can All agree on is we need the Dawgs defense to play light out A+ football. I think that’s pretty much a universal train of thought among Dawgs fans. I think it’s gonna be a battle royal but I think our Dawgs sneak a close W. Gonna be tough playing in their house. Go Dawgs !!
Well we can agree that we take what the defense gives us. Or you can get creative and make the defense give us what we want, not what they want to give us. That's what championship teams do—go play action deep after a long run.
I’m gonna stand by my opinions. And it’s certainly OK if you stand by yours. I’ve not said Never throw the ball deep. I’m just saying it’s best in my view to throw the deep ball when our receiver or TE as the case might be is more open.
Contested passes calls for Gunner or any QB to throw a precision pin point ball. And I’m not saying he’s not capable of doing that but the risk level of an INT goes way up. Dandridge has shown a knack for getting behind defenders and getting open deep. In that scenario Yes by all means heave the ball to him !
Now there are times because of the score and the amount of time left on the clock you Have to throw contested deep balls. It becomes a necessity. So on those you have to go for it. But other wise I advocate Run the ball mixing in short to intermediate throws, deep throws IF our receiver is open and a few designed Gunner runs.
Ole Miss allowed over 300 yds. Rushing by UF. I honestly believe it’s their Achilles heel. Baugh no matter how good is One Man. Our RBs bring different types of running. Phillips speed and decent strength. Frazier strength and decent speed. Walker runs low to the ground has great strength and is like trying to tackle a fire hydrant !! So Ole Miss won’t just have the type of run that Baugh made and successfully. They’ll be faced with different styles each potent in their own right.
I am opposed to all the bubble screen passes ! Throw the ball over the middle to our big TEs. Those guys are Big and hard to tackle. So there should be good YAC when our TEs catch the ball. As the rival defense wearies trying to stop all that Boom Dandridge gets deep and Gunner throws the deep bomb !!
With a steady diet of deep passes IF we can score quickly it puts our defense right back on the field. Speaking for Me I don’t want to get into a back and forth Quick scoring shoot out with Ole Miss !! That plays right into the way their team is built. Where as our Dawgs are built more for long sustained drives. That’s my case and I believe it’s accurate.
I agree.
Go. Dawgs!
