Fox was a great coach. He did pretty much the best he could with his players. The problem was he couldn’t recruit the big time talent. He turned lower rated recruits like Mann, Gaines, Frazier, and Maten into studs, however he didn’t have talent around that to win anything.
I'm not sure too many high end recruits would want to play with his style. It doesn't translate that well to the next level.
Fox ran a terrible offense, just painfully inept. He was not a top recruiter either. He was a good defensive coach, but on balance he was a bad hire.
Yes, never understood why people thought he was a great coach. He was decent as a coach, mediocre as a recruiter, and horrible at selling the program. CTC did more to promote the program in his first week than Fox did in his what seemed liked 78 years here.
Mark 'Mr Personality' Fox is not a natural salesman by any standard.
