the slaw recipe I use is designed to use with a pork sandwich. it is only just ok without it

I'm also a purist. No bbq on a bun or any type of bread for me. Good bbq should just need a fork. And pickles. Gotta have pickles.
If the slaw is good then heck yeah
I do it both ways, but I sample the slaw first before I jack up a perfectly good sandwich with a less than desirable slaw. I’m pretty picky about slaw. It’s got to be GOOD or else you can throw it in the trash before putting any in the fridge for leftovers.
Sides are baked beans and fries. Brunswick stew is not a side. Brunswick Stew is either a standalone dish or poorly done, imo.

Purist? A fraudulent claim. 😷 You either need a bun, or texas toast. One or the other. Neither is what people do when they are pretending to be on a diet but still eat way too much.

I don't usually do the /s, but in heavens' name, cannot tolerate someone believing I would add raisins to slaw, or on slaw topping Q.
No to slaw on Q as served, but whatever floats their boat (add it themselves) is fine with me. I actually like vinegary slaw. Detest really creamy slaw. Slaw with mayo is fine, just not too much.
I like slaw on a sandwich...but savory and crispy, not sweet or too much dressing.
Agreed. You absolutely need Texas Toast or a slice of Sunbeam white bread.

Dreamland, the Bear’s fav, serves only white bread. Had a sign that said something like “ No chips, no fries. Don’t ask!” mighty fine tasting flesh served there.
My first job was making bbq sauce, including Dreamland’s bbq sauce, in Columbus, GA.

A chili slaw burger is fantastic if all the ingredients are good. Wendy's used to sell them when I lived in Black Mountain NC, not surprisingly they called it The Carolina Burger.

It's an optional topping that should compliment the sandwich and not take away from it. And like the garden, the consumer should always be asked if they want it or have it provided on the side.
