Need advice from dawgnation farmers. Help south Georgia boys.
Planting millet this weekend for duck season. How deep do I plant it.?
Comments
Video below. Sounds like this guy says barely cover it, and some guys don't cover it all (but you run the risk of birds and other things eating before it germinates).
I'm not too familiar with millet but if it's like sorghum then not too deep. Do you have a drill or how are you planting it?
Just gonna plow and plant.
Yes. Hogs and deer.
Japanese Millet or Brown Top? Way way back when I used to duck hunt on my farm in NC we used a drag which was made with a piece of old chain link fence. Would drag it around the pond which was usually low this time of year and then just broadcast the Jap millet. Only thing we worried about were the song birds getting to it. Brown top needs a little over a 1/4" cover if I remember correctly.
Might add this was coastal NC and sandy soil so the south GA hunters may do it totally different.
If you're going to plow up the ground first, I'd make sure to smooth it out pretty good, not sure what kind of equipment you have access to. Then if you broadcast it you could lightly drag it in or just broadcast right before a good rain. I'm pretty sure it's a small seed so only need it covered about 1/4 of an inch.
A general rule of thumb in gardening is to plant seeds about 2 times their width deep.
John Deere utility tractor
The area you're planting, has it been planted before? Is there anything growing in there now?
We haven't decided where yet. Somewhere around the 20 acre tank. But there has never been anything planted where we are planting.
If you're going to spray before plowing just make sure to check the residual of the chemical. Don't want to spray to kill grasses and turn around and plant within a week if there is a two week residual. Will have poor results if any at all. Found that out the hard way lol
Ok. Don't think we'll spray. Thought we could just do it like deer food plots. Not really concerned about grass and weeds.
I thought you were a CPA
Tex, this is a heck of a lot cheaper:

Haha no CPA, not quite that dedicated. I've been in the foodplot game for about 10 years with my dad so we've learned a lot the hard way. Bunch of trial and error.
If you're ever back in GA and want to shoot some hogs I have a place for ya but I'm sure y'all have more than your fair share in TX
No kidding. And I don't duck hunt.
I'm an avid deer and quail hunter (where in Texas there are still wild bobs and blues)
I'm helping out a buddy.
