Yep, I've wondered how the you-don't-lose-a-year-of-eligibility affects everything recruiting wise. Certainly, those going to the NFL are going to do so, but it's different for your good-but-not-amazing guys. What happens when you have people that you anticipated leaving to make room for others and new recruits but they decide they are staying? Do you tell them that they can't be part of the team or lose scholarships?

I haven't looked into it, but have assumed the NCAA would temporarily expand the roster limit while this gets sorted out. It shouldn't take more than one to maybe a few years for the retained players to all move on - roster numbers will be dropping more quickly than usual during that time. I'm not sure how the scholarship limit gets handled in the meantime, could conceivable get messy. But the alternative is to tell players who would otherwise be playing college ball that they're not allowed to, essentially just because.

Maybe they just institute a rule that by 202X every team must be back down to 85, and let each program decide how they want to achieve that?

The NCAA absolutely needs to increase the cap on scholarships for until year end 2022. That organization seems to consistently lead from behind with their wait and see approach. "Stu pid is as stu pid does."

CKS does indeed have a dilemma because even our star-kicker Podlesney is not on scholarship. The kid is in the running for the Lou Gaza award and isn't even on scholarship! How long do think he will be sticking around if he isn't offered one soon?

I've been curious to see how Zirkel does. Not saying I wouldn't care if Podlesny left, but I would think we've got a decent option behind him.

The current seniors don't figure into this. They are able to stay on if they like and won't count against the 85 for 2021. The problem, and it's not Covid-related, is that the early signing period is in December, and date for eligible underclassmen to commit to go pro isn't until mid-January. It looks as though the December early signing date is becoming the new norm, regardless of early enrollment, as many thought it would in the last few years. I see the February signing date going away at some point. The best option would be for the early signing date to be the day after the date that underclassmen can declare for the draft. That removes the roster uncertainty. That would also allow for more coach recruitment time (in a normal year) so that teams in NY6 bowls or the natty can still get a little recruiting in before signing day, assuming it stays in January. I don't think you want to move the declaration up into December, as that would likely cause even more bowl opt-outs than we've already seen exploding. And if someone gets hurt in bowl practice or the game, they might change their mind if they can't work out for NFL teams or pro days. I'm just not sure there's a date that makes sense for both early signees/early enrollees (which generally would start classes the first week of January) and the underclassmen declaring for the draft. As for the current issue, the NCAA (and SEC) should make roster limit exemptions for the January 1 - January 17 decision period, and those exemptions should either be permanent or the dates have to be synchronized. If some underclassmen change their mind, there should be a way to keep those freshmen on scholarship, but maybe not have them work on the field until the numbers are back down to 85. (They should still be able to do S&C and film and meeting work. They just can't practice.) Go Dawgs!

We are probably looking at some transfers ‘in’ as well. We could really use a few experienced talented guys on crappy teams to plug some holes. Safety, , Dline, maybe a CB or 2. We’ll have a few guys leave that know they’ve been recruited over and will never see the field. That will be good for both parties. Gonna be interesting.
