Leadership starts at the top! CKS and company need to be developing these young men better to be leaders from day 1 on campus. I would designate one or two guys at EACH position group in EVERY CLASS, mold them, get them counseling on the how and why of leadership. Most of these kids straight off the boat from High School have never had an example of what a leader looks like. How invaluable would that be to the team and the men who develop those life skills? I'm sorry but, hoping a few returning seniors step-up like in 2017 is a flawed way of thinking. I am not saying militarize a leadership program, just make it more of a developmental priority when they are Freshman!
Yep, I agree that it shouldn't be the situation where the players finally get to the point to where they are fed up and start leading, instead there should ALWAYS be assigned leaders and if they can't do it, assign someone else.
There should be leaders for both Offensive and Defensive side with leaders on 1st, 2nd and scout teams as well. It's not about bossing, it's about getting things cohesive.
This is one of those times it bears repeating. Football is TRULY a team sport. It's not like basketball where one superstar can lead your team all the way or baseball where a homerun king can win you games. If the team doesn't "click" and mistakes are made, you will lose. Penalties hurt. Sacks can be game changers.
One thing I never liked seeing from Richt's squads was the chaos. We'd play some cupcake and being trailing at halftime because players looked like they had no idea what was going on. Players taking leadership to make sure that all players are "getting it right" ensures plays get executed properly.
When you win, you have great leaders. When you lose, you need great leaders. I don't care if you lead, follow or get out of the way -- just win, baby!
