ATHENS — The Georgia football backfield didn’t rank among the Top 5 in the SEC last weekend, per SEC Network analyst Roman Harper, but Kirby Smart isn’t panicking.

I would argue that our RB crew has proven that they can get the job done, so there's no reason to rely on them against this weaker opponent. We need to THROW THE BALL. Heavily. JT has proven himself, so give him a quarter or two to get us a solid lead and then put in Beck and a bit of Vandagriff and give them work.
Running the ball and staying conservative on O is the smart play this week. Like last week CKS determined that UGA was assured of a win if they played a mistake free game. Same thing this week. UGA will either be playing a physically less than optimal QB or a 1st time starter QB. They will let the RB's win it for them this week. WR's are still banged up. Better to take a lock win grinding UAB into submission that risk a loss with turnovers to a good but inferior team. (see USCe -4 turnover ratio in '19(?)). BTW I looked at the UAB roster. They have a lot of seniors and a lot of size. Their OL must avg 320+ lbs. They have multiple LB's listed over 250 lb. They have a big and mature team.
Not a top rushing game? I disagree. Yes, no TD's. But UGA got the ball back with 5 minutes left in the game. They ran the ball against arguably the best front 7, in college football and moved the ball down the field and ran out the clock. How many of those good running teams could have done that?
I'm somewhere in between when it comes to running vs. passing in this game. Whoever the QB is, I do think the receivers and OL need a much in-game practice as they can get in *relatively* easy games like this, but also see the argument for not allowing this to be a step backward in terms of season momentum. Try airing it out to start, I say. If after a quarter or two it's starting to look like one of those "oh geez, here we go" type of games, then go back to your bread and butter in the running game to get you through it, regroup in practice and try again next week.
Harper is typical of ESPN talking head “experts”…very shallow. If his top five had been playing Clemson, those five teams would have been carrying losses into week two and their running game would have garnered less yards than what Zamir put up. On the other hand, if the Dawgs had played teams of the caliber of his top five’s opponents, the Dawgs would have been his number one. Harper, Ha! I laugh at you!
Arguably the best front 7 in college football? I think that DJ Uiagalelei might make an argument for a certain other team's front 7!
Talk about not “comparing apples to apples”. I think Roman should have waited a few weeks before compiling his list. His top 5 teams played: Akron, Florida Atlantic, Central Michigan, Kent State and Eastern Illinois……AND it should be noted that all 5 games were home games for the SEC teams. How can you compare any of those opponents to Clemson on the road. Oh well, I guess Roman had to have a show and he based everything on statistics. BTW…..UAB is much better than any of those 5 SEC opponents so we need to be ready to play. Go Dawgs!!!
It should be difficult to come to any conclusions after one weekend. Clemson’s offense looked like a total basket case. It surely was overrated. Unfortunately this does not mean they will not make the playoffs. The fourth spot could very well be between UGA and Clemson which would be awful.
As for the game against UAB, start Beck and let JT completely heal. Based on talent alone this is a win. Use a balanced game plan. If the defense has to bail out the offense again so be it. The objective should be the long game and not just this Saturday. There should be two clear objectives- get JT to 100% and develop a backup quarterback.
While I know many will disagree, if JT goes down then Kirby is looking at a season much like last year’s.
