I'm extremely grateful we have Stetson and glad he's returning, but I will admit I was one of his biggest critics throughout the year. Not because he was a bad QB, but because I think our O would have had a higher ceiling with JT. Congrats to Stetson on a phenomenal year and he'll go down as a UGA icon, but I believe JT would have also won the Natty. Nonetheless, I have "chosen" to trust CKS on the QB room eventhough I cringe much of the time. We hired and trusted CKS to make the tough calls, so if any of us have a "beef" it should be with him and not Stetson. Stetson is a baller and just wants to play ball. And it's hard to be too critical with a Natty in our pocket! As far as next year, for me it's all on Brock to prove he's the better QB. I believe he'll get that chance based on CKS making JT the starter vs. Clemson. So I'm way off the Stetson bashing bandwagon. And I hope Brock proves out his 5 star pedigree and makes the decision easy for CKS in 2022. If he doesn't, we have a solid QB in Stetson. Go 'Dawgs!
Cranberries are great. No need to pass. Ever try crasins?
Griffith obviously, although covering the Dawgs on a daily basis, hasn’t been paying attention. Kirby’s entire coaching philosophy is that steel sharpens steel.
Griffith asks, “Why would Kirby be aggressively pursuing Williams?” Kirby has given the answer to that question at least a thousand times…to make the team better. Does that mean a guarantee that Williams would be the starter? Look at Kirby’s history! Not no, but *ell no!
Williams can come in and compete, the same opportunity Daniels had. But, if Bennett, Vandegriff, or even Stockton give the team the best chance to win or, best case scenario, prove to be elite, Williams would be no different than Daniels, regardless of the crap Kirby would take on social media and press from armchair QB experts!
In five years, Kirby has gotten the UGA talent level on par with Bama. Miraculous! No one knows better than Kirby that elite QB play is the missing piece to the puzzle to surpass Bama! He will not rest until he finds that piece. He knows it’s not Bennett just as he learned it wasn’t Daniels. Until he finds that piece, he will go with the QB who gives the Dawgs the best chance to win. I agree 100%!
UPDATE: UGA has a group of former fans who are being encouraged to enter the Transfer Portal. If your program fan base should need a boost, this would be a great addition to your school. This group has been following and rooting for UGA thru the last 5 seasons in which UGA has 5 top 10 finishes (4 top 3) and 5 top 3 recruiting classes. They are all likely more knowledgeable of football and coaching than any members of your current coaching staff. Names include Zcupps, steve1995, rumdawg, bigdog89, vetdog, BG522,T_Dawg, MickyR, GardenDawg, TNDAWG81, prldawg & MGriff as honhorary captian of the group. The list is growing. Package deal. GODAWGS!

”There is no doubt in anyone's mind whether they are pro or against Stet that JT Daniels would have had the same record as Stet and won the National Championship.”
Sorry, brother, but there IS extreme doubt in my mind about your conclusion. In my view, Stetson’s mobility and ability to tuck the ball and run was a major factor in the Orange Bowl (and throughout the season). His tenacity and focused, calm, and cool approach in the 4th quarter of NC was what turned the Tide (pun intended). Based on JT’s performance against Clemson (and other factors), 3 points scored by the offense, I have my doubts JT was ever capable of any of this. If JT had been the starter, I believe we would have never made it to the NC game.
These are merely my opinions, just as you have your own.
Go Dawgs!
Kirby could care less what we think or say....he is doing what Kirby does...constantly getting the best players for each position he can....that includes QB. I figure he has told Bennett...no guarantees....come back and compete...Stetson is doing just that. Caleb Williams? Have nopt hear word one on this. Arch Manning....no surprise there. Kirby is relentless...that is why UGA is national champ;
See, I love this kind of reasoned, full-spectrum thinking (from street0123) that includes all the relevant parties with minimal degrading of the various characters. I posted an admittedly over-charged post the other day (full disclosure: after starting and having to cut, paste to another app, rewrite the lost parts, and repost before getting refreshed SEVEN times before I could get that post finished, I was a bit hot-and-bothered by the process, which upon reflection affected my own tone... my bad on that one) about bias and re-hashing the same things over-and-over (as this article does)... I think the vast majority of DawgNation members may or may not have supported Stetson in the internal competition, but virtually every one of them backed him once on the field. I'm guessing same goes for JT, were the roles reversed.
Now, it's time to unite behind whoever comes out of the Spring/Summer as the (hopefully clear-cut) "winner" of the competition, and put personal biases aside once they're in the game. I have to say, for the people we now KNOW are on the roster (players and coaches), I personally have high confidence that UGA will have another strong run to the CFP... Go Dawgs!
(PS: this refresh thing has become so infuriating, I now go to my laptop (vs phone or iPad) to comment, as it's easier to save interim versions to beat the post-destroyer 😁😂)
Spot on!
"But Bennett also played bad enough to lose that game had the Bulldogs’ defense not held the Tide’s Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback to just one touchdown — at that, after a Bennett fumble at the 16-yard line."
Please stop disparaging Bennett's ability because he was the QB of a team with a great defense. The defense did its job by keeping Bama with its Heisman QB and four- and five-star receivers out of the end zone on 5 red zone trips. Somehow, in this article, that's a knock on Bennett. It's a team game and quite possibly the ultimate team game. Bryce Young played well enough to win that game if Bama's defense had kept this former walk-on QB and three-and four-star receivers from making plays when it mattered most but guess what, it didn't, and he lost.
I was JT all the way in 2020 since Smart actually thought Mathis was better than Bennett and then Smart benched Bennett when Daniels got healthy and Daniels being 7-0 as a starter and add to that Bennett's INT's against Bama in consecutive games, so yeah, I was in JT's camp UNTIL the Michigan game. In that game, Bennett shut me up about his ability in big games and shut me up about Smart's ability to deploy the right QB. Now, we're National Champions because of Bennett's pass to 3-star Adonai Mitchell, not the Bowers TD nor Ringo's pick six, those plays extended the lead, but Bennett and Mitchell gave us the final lead, and now I guess because Bennett was not 32-35 with 400 yards and 5 TD's we should be grateful for the defense in spite of Bennett. Stop it.
Very creative, timely, and the best post I’ve seen in awhile!
I was there in 1980 and I was there last week. This has been my team all my life. And I will never criticize the QB who brought us all another Natty.
I just believe though, that if we don't play our 5-star QBs, we soon won't have any 5-star QBs.
let's not forget to include @MikeGriffith
The one point that seems to get overlooked is age. Forget about volume of game experience, the fact that you have a 25 year old QB as an option vs the typical 19 and 20 year olds gives Bennett a leg up. Just based on maturity alone. Somewhat similar to the Brandon Weeden situation 10 years ago.
I think that I am going to have to stop reading MG because everytime I almost gag at his **** up to JT and disparaging Stet. If you want to read a balanced article regarding the QB situation check out Seth Emerson. Oops, forgot he moved UP and we got MG as a replacement. Guess The Athletic prefers pumpkin pie!!!
