Georgia rivalries with Florida, Auburn questioned with new SEC schedule models, fans weigh in
ATHENS — The SEC talk of new schedule models and Georgia’s recently announced plans to invest another $68.5 million into Sanford Stadium have Bulldogs’ fans buzzing.

Unpopular opinion; but the Florida fans are jean short wearing trash who can’t lose with dignity and grace. Further the UGA/UF game is likely to always be kept in Jax due to financial/political reasons. So this game isn’t as accessible for the average fan.
The Auburn rivalry is a great rivalry, both campuses are gorgeous, both fan bases are classy (for the most part) and this game is just a days drive up the road for the majority of either fan base. I think if UF was dropped this game would just grow bigger and it’s cross division which is really cool.
I also think the UGA/Auburn game takes place at night far more often and the games have been less lopsided far more often it seems and that is a huge benefit.

It starts and stops with a 6-3 model. Half of what makes college football great is tradition and rivalries. I've been checking out of the game more and more the last few seasons. I've got better stuff to do on Saturdays than watch a money grab under the guise of amateur athletics and tradition. NIL and the modern transfer portal might make me a passive fan at best, kinda like basketball. NIL and the portal definitely make recruiting less interesting. I'll be watching how much (if any) the recruiting industry takes a hit as fans become less concerned about their favorite recruit signing once they see a few 1-and-dones transfer rather than compete for playing time.
I would love to get the Dawgs out of Jacksonville. That has always been a Florida home game and loss in recruiting. We won't always have Kirby.
I personally think the Auburn/UGA rivalry is historically (130 years) a bigger deal than our Gator games. Yes indeed Florida has been a more significant opponent in recent years thanks to them being in the SEC East and a special thanks to Spurrier and Meyer for intensifying the rivalry. If the SEC goes to the 7-1 scheduling model then UGA likely won’t have to decide between Auburn and Florida because the Tigers will have Bama as their permanent opponent. Oh well….looks like we are stuck with the lizards 🦎 Go Dawgs!!!

Our rivals are all four + the NATS.
We need to dump enriching Jacksonville with an annual game which hurts recruiting. Period. Trust Kirby on this one.

2 issues to unpack here. 1) Jacksonville and 2) 7- 1 vs 3-6. The Jax issue is a no brainer. CKS doesn't want it. It is an advantage for FU and a disadvantage for UGA (AND the State of GA). I expect the WLOCP to be history after the '23 game. Kirby may be from a small, rural town in GA but he ain't no dummy. Jax needs to end. The money that comes into GA/Athens every other year is much greater than what Jax pays UGA. What is good for Athens and GA is good for UGA. PLUS extra, VALUABLE recruiting time.
The 3-6 vs 7-1 debate is 100% dependent on WHEN the CFB playoffs are expanded. Saban is right that, as long as the CFB playoffs are at 4 teams, adding a 9th SEC conference game is a disadvantage for SEC teams to make the playoff over other conferences playing 8 conference games and a number of cupcakes. SEC conference will try to clear up CFB playoff expansion plan prior to solidifying the SEC schedule.
For the record, expanding the CFB playoffs to 12 teams is ridiculous and clearly a money grab. There are not and will not be 12 teams worthy of playing in an expanded CFB playoff any time soon. The games will not be competitive and will dilute the true CFB playoff experience. There weren't 4 competitive teams worthy of making the 4 team field in '21. Completely against the top 4 teams getting bye's and having an extra week to get healthy and prepared so CFB can pocket more cash. If expansion is a must (too much cash to be grabbed) then 8 teams is the right number.
Also I hope the SEC sticks to their guns over automatic bids. Make everybody earn their way in. Automatic bids are just another cash grab by conferences grabbing the coattails of the CFB cash cow.
Would you rather see more SEC v SEC games OR give more SEC teams a chance to play in an expanded college football playoffs? I know my answer…
KEEP THE UGA/AU GAME PLEASE!
Knowing Auburn like I think I do, they will POUNCE at the chance to take the easy road and get UGA off their schedule, instead of keeping a rivalry game the fans love. A game played for what 125 years or so? That is simply just the Auburn way. If UGA was playing as sorry as AU has lately, now they would sing the opposite tune and cry foul... Just simply the Auburn way. Hope I am wrong and some old school non-donors run this show and they keep the game forever. It means a lot, particularly to people on the west side of GA and east side of AL. To end this very long-running rivalry game would be wrong for EVERY reason (except just Auburn getting an easier yearly schedule!). I would rather play Auburn than Tenn or Kentucky or anyone else and as much as UF. Getting rid of Tech seems like the way to go. Auburn would NEVER get rid of a sure win most years to keep UGA though. Holding out hope that AU will have the right people making this decision. KEEP THE UGA/AU GAME PLEASE!
While I agree there are not 12 teams any year with a legitimate shot to win the Natty, 2021 was simply an outlier year. No OSU, OK, Clemson, and then there are usually a couple of other teams with a shot every year, heck just in the SEC there are like LSU, A & M I expect, UF and Tenn and AU again one day I suspect, Pac 12 will have 1 or 2 again I suspect. Big 10 too. So 5 league champs and 3-5 others, 8-10 or 12 teams seems like the logical number. the 8-12 teams would definitely be all about the money, but you know what? There is the chance for a Cinderella story team once in a while, which I am not against at all! But 12 teams means about 4 SEC teams every year and some years 5 or 6! So 12 is all good.
Heck, Auburn might use this opportunity to not have to play Alabama every year lol! Seriously...a chance to get rid of playing freakin Bama every freakin year?! They might seriously consider it. Then will be seen as being cowards and doing just that so probably not, but I bet they'd love to after that thought hit me. Even though I think UGA has beat them more than bama over the last 10-20 years or so.
Cinderella's happen in basketball but a Cinderella is not gonna happen in football. Are they really Cinderella's or is the field just so watered down? In basketball 1 or 2 players can dominate (ie create a "Cinderella") . Even in basketball the Cinderella's rarely make the final 4.
I'll give you what has been historically true in the CFB playoffs may not hold true in the future, BUT MI beat OSU soundly and Cinn (1 loss in 2 yrs?) was in completely over their head against AL. AL played vanilla, didn't show anything and rested their guys and it was still a blowout. Were all those teams down or are UGA and AL just that much better than everyone else?
If you go to 12 teams , UGA and AL will get bye's and LSU and aTm will work through the riff raff to put 3 or 4 SEC teams into into the final 4. Then rested, healthy UGA and AL will play for the championship. The playoffs should be somewhat exclusive to make the regular season meaningful.
But, no matter what, the 12 team playoff is coming. Too much TV money to grab. Just a matter of when. Since I have been following recruiting and have lost all interest in the NFL, I will be watching the resulting 11 CFB playoff games. At least for the 1st half while they're competitive.
I'd like to see the 3-6 format with the 3 being FLA, AUB, USC. Then for the three out of conference games, one is Ga Tech, one with a Pwr 5 Blue Blood (OSU, Mich, the other USC, UCLA) as best as possible, and the third against Grp of 5, FCS. Really like to see home and home against service academies. I'm contrary to most i've read; i want UGA/FL to stay in Jax. I love the split stadium, pre-game, and the walk back to my waiting bus to St Simons. The main thing i miss is the unique parts to UGA home pre-game (video board, solo trumpet). As for playoffs, 8 teams using the ideas prior to BCS of a +1 or +2 format, taking winners of 4 New Year's day bowls and furthering two rounds of playoffs.
