Jacksonville mayor on Georgia-Florida: ‘We’re going to fight to keep this game here’
ATHENS — Jacksonville mayor Lenny Curry said he understands Kirby Smart gets paid to win football games.

Home -n- Home is the way to go!
Why should Jax /North FL get all of the economic benefit every year???!!!
since UGA represents the state of GA, the only fair thing is to alternate between ATL and JAX!
I vote we play our home games in Athens and Florida plays their home games in Jacksonville to keep the tradition alive. Go Dawgs!!!
I don’t see Georgia agreeing to play fla in Jax for their home game and having more fla fans than Dawg fans, unless they work out a 60/40 split or something close. Playing the game in Atlanta still doesn’t solve the recruiting issue. I also don’t understand why Georgia and fla don’t petition the sorry ncaa to allow recruits to go to neutral site games. We are saying goodbye to a lot of great traditions in college football. Go Dawgs!!
Pass the pipe mayor! In what alternate universe is there “balance” in recruiting when UF is 70 miles away and UGA is 340?
UF could certainly entertain players at the game, but I doubt they want to since their recruits would see a middle of the pack team vs. Kirby’s elite Dawgs. That would be two wins for the Dawgs in one day.
UGA hosting recruits in Jacksonville isn’t in the realm of possibilities since there would barely be time for coaches to visit with players and families much less tour the campus and the best college town in the world.
C’mon mayor, pass the pipe and please explain the “balance” for UGA!
That was an epic stand of Lenny towards Kirby smart! 👀🍿
There is no way to recruit equally in jax. DAWGS campus and the City of Athens are the best and the atmosphere at a home DAWG game with the gaders would be unbelievable!!!
Let's pretend Jacksonville is Dodge City, Kansas in the 1870's. And get the Hell outta Dodge.
Curry, "we're going to fight to keep this game in FL". Translation: we're going to throw a ton of money at UGA in hopes they forget about what is best for recruiting and GA and take the money grab.
"Working in every single donor and booster on both sides"? Translation: JAX is going to pressure the UGA donors and boosters to use their influence (withhold their "boost"?) to stop the move if UGA tries to move the game. That sounds like a threat to me.
JAX not going down w/o a fight. Too much money at stake. JAX been sopping up the gravy for a long time. Everybody/thing about FL fighting to keep this game in FL. What does that tell you?
I don't think CKS falls for it. We'll see who runs the football program at UGA; UGA administrators or CKS. Governor Kemp surprising quiet on the subject. Now I am starting to think that moving this game to a home-home may be bigger than CKS can pull off. I see some kind of compromise happening for a while 1st. Home-home-JAX or JAX-ATL or a short extension and revisit.
BTW, "recruiting" at the game in JAX in completely asinine. Where you gonna host the recruits and families? In the Holiday Inn ballroom? Can't see the campus, support personnel, all the new/great facilities, packed Sanford, get the feel for Athens on big game day, etc etc. Not the same at recruiting in Athens. Also favors FU as they can bus/caravan everybody to/from campus and still show off their campus/facilities on the same day.
"...working things out with former Bulldogs AD and current Gator Bowl president Greg McGarity." M'kay. Wonder how that worked...
I wish CKS would have included as a clause in his most recent contract extension to ensure when the Jacksonville contract runs out the series becomes a home and home - assuming UGA and FL are in the same pod or whatever gets decided.
How about the Mayor of Athens getting vocal?
Move the game!!!
How about a three location schedule. In Fl, then Ga, then Jacksonville.
