Kirby Smart must decide on style points against FCS Samford, specifically, will there be any?

This may be the best article from MG.....ever. The recruiting "angle" is on the mark and will tell us all about whether CKS is feeling the heat from elite offensive recruits on the recruiting trail.

It will be extremely difficult for UGA to cover a 52 pt spread. CKS is not one to run the score up on anyone especially this opponent. It also makes sense to liberally substitute in this game to minimize injury risk. This is a game that could be won by 3rd teamers. The flip side of getting guys game reps is managing who you will redshirt this year.

No one mentions the danger these overmatched teams and their players are exposed to. Basically these overmatched players are tackling dummies for the more skilled and much bigger elite teams. That puts those players at a higher risk for injury. All so that their schools can pocket a million dollars. Pitting elite vs overmatched teams for money (or an easy win) is possibly the single worst thing there is about college football. Hopefully conference expansion will eliminate these cupcake games. No one wants to see 55-0 games.

Style pts definitely matter to the people who vote on rankings. That has been made obvious in CFB over the last few seasons.

The best thing to do is get 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th string teams playing time about a quarter each. Let the future recruits see how Georgia develops all levels and showcase its depth. I want to see every qb play and excell along with every offense skill position. The defense force 2 turn overs and no mistakes on special teams block one punt and or fg attempt. The Dawgs eat! Little brother going run home with its tail between its legs so long as rain stays away for the game.

“…this new-and-improved version of Bennett…” Hmmmm. Just two weeks ago MG insinuated that SBIV was the starter only because there was no other choice even though he was a Natty winner with a QBR just slightly below Young and Stroud. No, not new and improved, but finally getting the media credit he deserves which would have come a long time ago if MG and others had focused on results and not fostered a negative view based on Stetson not fitting someone’s biased view of what “credentials” a QB should have and “look” like!!!

Having "Elite Receivers " is so overrated. Tell me what receiver is clearly head and shoulders better than AD Mitchell. What slot receiver is clearly better than Ladd McConkey? Many have more catches but what about route running and good hands? More than likely, our offense is going to set records this season without one top 100 receiver and more than likely we'll be right back in the playoffs.

Look out “talking heads”, here comes the Georgia Bulldawgs!

You make a point. But calling McConkey and AD your typical 3* players is quite a stretch. UGA discovered gold in those 2. For every AD or Ladd there's 3 Tray Bishops, Matt Landers, Mike Chigbu, Jayson Stanley, Tommy Bush, Makiya Tongue, Justin Robinson, etc. Low rated guys that take up a spot but don't pan out.

And don't forget, for every blue chip player UGA misses , that's a player you'll see on the field playing for AL, FU, Clem, etc. You can't count on catching lightning in a bottle every year. If CKS didn't think highly rated players were worth working hard to get ("players win games" -CKS) and spending more money recruiting than any other program, why would he do it?

The game is changing/has changed. Rules changed to open up offenses. Elite WR's = step up in passing game. Get on the bus or get left behind. We're seeing definite bump in the road regarding UGA offense recruiting. Very surprising considering we were all expecting a positive bump in recruiting following the championship.

Those are some fair points. But I also think it's fair to say that the whole emphasis that's put on having elite receivers is overblown in that a lot of people make it out to be the end all-be all. Saban apparently did, according to every Bama fan and apologist out there, and even according to Saban himself, it would seem. Apparently, Bama's entire potential was pinned on the gamble that a small handful of relatively delicate players would stay healthy all year. And when one of them blew out his knee just running down the field, Bama's chances of doing anything against Georgia - again, to hear everyone outside of Athens tell it - went up in smoke. While Georgia, being the more well-rounded team, was more resilient against the attrition they themselves had to deal with, and won the title.

This is not to say that Smart should not be pursuing elite offensive skill players. Absolutely he should. I know I sure wouldn't mind seeing some more 5 star receivers here in Athens. But WRs are just one position group, one part of the formula. And after watching Georgia win it all with a true team effort, the harping on WRs just gets old.

@UGADad20, please don't misunderstand me, I would prefer elite receivers but they are not necessary to win championship football. If they were, Ohio State would dominate more so than Bama.

They definitely weren't necessary last year. Or were they? That catch that Pickens made was 5*. That TD that AD had out fighting the AL DB on a 50/50 ball was 5*.

NO DOUBT it takes ELITE across many positions to win a championship. CKS constantly talking about "explosive" plays. Much easier to get long plays out of the passing game vs the running game. Just sayin.

They may not be necessary but they sure would be helpful. BTW, so far, not a peep out of Jermaine Burton today. Burton seems to be settling into his role as 3rd or 4th WR at AL.
