Stetson Bennett, Spencer Rattler and life after getting benched
Georgia football quarterback Stetson Bennett has been benched multiple times at Georgia. Yet he's still the starting quarterback for the Bullogs.

I’ve never considered Bennett as being “benched” either season. In 2020 he was the starter until his shoulder injury when he was eventually replaced by JT who had just recovered from his own injury. In fact, Bennett started the season as our #4 QB behind JT, Newman and Mathis. He had UGA ahead of Florida by 14 points when he was injured so he wasn’t actually benched due to a poor performance. Last season JT was our official starting QB, but several injuries caused him to come and go as our starter. So I didn’t see Stetson as being benched, just replaced when the injured “starting” QB ahead of him returned. Reality is that Mathis was benched in 2020 during a disastrous Arkansas game and JT was benched in 2021 (if he had actually fully recovered from his injuries). It appears that other QBs have been benched the past 2 seasons due to Bennett’s performances. Go Dawgs!!!
Sometimes you need someone else to believe in you before you can believe in yourself.
This is a true statement, but it would be hard to think of anyone other than Stetson to whom it applies less.
QB1 believed in himself when he was running the scout team's offense. He believed in himself long before that when he was a high school football star. He believed in himself enough to never buy into somebody's notion that his size trumped his abilities to run and lead an offense.
Yes, he's been successfully coached by the Bulldawg staff. He undoubtedly has more confidence as a result of his development and growth, but believing in himself is what got him where he is. That and the fact that he arrived in Athens with a great deal of talent, athleticism, smarts, and drive.
Go, Dawgs!
RIght Jim Wallace........Stetson believe in Stetson when nobody else did!
@MikeGriffith
"He’s been virtually flawless to start the season, accounting for four touchdowns and zero turnovers."--MG
Bennett is actually responsible for 5 TD's...not "four", as stated in the article. 3 passing TDs & 2 Rushing TDs.
We gotta keep an eye on MG. His "mistakes" with Bennett's Stats and Story are always in the negative direction. LOL. He just can't bring himself to "buy-in fully", the way he did with Daniels. Hope it gets better. Bennett deserves better home-town representation.
If anything turns top talent away from UGA....it's the lack of support the Fans and Media gave Bennett. Who would want to have to deal with that. He should get a Trophy for just surviving the last 4 years. LOL
@BigDawg61
Dude, I didn't write that article
Keep an eye on yourself, lol
The difference between the two....Rattler is an opportunist, taking his skills and abilities to whoever provides the best opportunity....nothing wrong with that, just the plan he employs. SBIV, on the other hand, is consumed with loyalty to a team that he had dreamed of leading all of his life. Despite, one setback after another, SBIV persevered by never giving up. For my money, I'll take a DGD over a Rattler every time and I believe that time will prove me right!
Hahaha...sorry man.. That's on me. LOL
I'm used to, you writing the QB articles. Did you straighten Conner out? LOL
@DJG76 I won't question Bennett's loyalty to UGA, but let's not forget that he actually TRANSFERRED away from dear old UGA himself to get a better "opportunity" to play, before the then-desperate UGA coaching staff pleaded with him to return. So Rattler only did what Bennett did before him; he assessed that the playing time situation for him at OU would not be optimal, so he transferred to a better one. And as you rightly noted, there's "nothing wrong with that." Go Dawgs!
@DJG76 You know Stetson transferred out after one year, right? And that he said on national TV he wasn't sure if he was coming back to UGA unless he could trust the coaches ....
Most every student-athlete has to look out for their own best interests, like their coaches .... UGA tried to get Caleb Williams, so Stet was right to keep an ear to the ground.
It has become a business.
