Not certain what the deal is here. First off, all college coaches promote their players. Some guys hype them in the press (Freeman). Some guys leave their guys in until 5 minutes are left in the 4th quarter of a game they are ahead by 4 scores so they can rack up stats (Smart). I dare say that I prefer the former.
Another thing: a 1-to-1 comparison between Mayer and Bowers is difficult anyway. Bowers is 230 lbs, smaller than some receivers (and a lot of linebackers) which limits how offenses can use him as a blocker (more downfield/open field stuff against DBs and less taking on front 7 players near the LOS and in traffic). Mayer is 250 lbs, meaning he can be more of a traditional TE as a blocker. Because of this there are some offenses that wouldn't play Bowers at TE at all: he would be playing WR or RB. But pretty much every offense would play Mayer at TE, even the air raid ones that probably would be more inclined to try to recruit a 270 lb. Darnell Washington to play RT or pass rusher instead of TE.
And I don't know where you guys are going with the stats thing. Mayer has played 5 games to Bowers' 6, and for a team who had to bench their starting QB after an 0-2 start. And no one outside Athens is going to be impressed by Bowers' 82 rushing yards because 75 of them came on a trick play against Kent State. There is a strong likelihood that Mayer is going to end the season with noticeably better receiving yards than Bowers. If that happens, Smith is rightfully campaigning for his guy to get the Mackey Award and first team All-American status instead of letting it go to Bowers via inertia.
I'm not sure any Head Coach of a top 10 team plays more subs in the 4th quarter with a significant lead than Coach Smart. I would say that's probably not a fair analysis for a coach who really doesn't seem to pay much attention to personal stats. As for hyping players in the media, these UGA players let their body of work speak for itself, with Bowers leading the pack. There's really nothing CKS could add in a tweet that would make it more impressive. I haven't seen enough of Mayer to evaluate how he compares to other TE's in the country (I'm sure he's quite a talented player if he's starting for ND), but I haven't heard anyone outside of South Bend touting him as the best TE in the country. Go Dawgs!
Vegas makes a living laying lines and determining who the better players are. They rate Bowers as a little over 2:1 odds higher chance of winning the Heisman which is not going to a TE unless they are a revelation at the position. If Bowers has that much better odds of taking home that award, while not getting NBC coverage every week, he is clearly the better player in their eyes. Mayer may end with better numbers, but he is the focal point of a terrible offense. Bowers, while a key piece, is but one of several pieces of a much better overall offense and hence has to share the ball more.
As for Bowers rushing yards, the only thing that has stopped Bowers so far when he has run the ball is the goal line. He has 87 yards because he has been a grand total of 87 yards away from the end zone when the ball has been handed to him.
Bowers is very likely the best player in college football.
Well, Bennett may trust Bowers, but we fans see that the last 3+ weeks that SB doesn’t have the ability to consistently get Bowers the ball when he is wide open.
The TE for KC last night, Travis Kelce, had 4 TD receptions in regulation.
There is almost no doubt in my non-objective mind that Bowers will be able to perform like that once he makes it to the NFL in 2 years. NONE.
But, IMO, SB needs to throw better, MUCH BETTER, than he has over the last 3+ games. I do not want to go another 2+ seasons of absolute dread and frustration like I did when we DAWG fans had AJ Green roaming the sidelines and watching Joe Cox not be able to consistently get him the ball through the air because he was too small for the position and he had a noodle for an arm.
that’s just a blunt analysis of how I see it being played out over the last 3+ weeks.
🤷♂️
CKS substitutes liberally everywhere.......except QB. Why? CKS feels that SBIV has a shot at the Heisman and is leaving him in to get his stat's? CKS has zero faith in his back up QB's? That explains why SBIV rarely runs by design. Can't afford to get him hurt.
