ATHENS — Georgia football came away with a convincing 48-7 win over UT-Martin. The Bulldogs had 559 yards of offense and gave up only one touchdown. That came late in the fourth quarter, with the game already well in hand.

I need to see Carson in crunch time. Will he be able to put this offense on his back and will it to a win? It almost looked to me like the game was moving faster than what Beck was comfortable with…the timing with receivers, throws behind receivers making easy throws difficult, not commanding the team between plays when Kirby was wanting the offense to go fast.

The Dawgs can’t afford ineffective offense for entire quarters against sub standard competition. I want Beck to succeed! Kirby says Beck gives us the best chance to win and I trust Kirby. To me, Vandegriff looked like the more poised, confident QB.

Perhaps we got lucky not traveling to Norman this weekend. Brock needs another practice game and a hot start!

A bit optimistic grades for all of the A's.

Special Teams was okay, but certainly not in "A" territory... an extra point was almost missed as it hit the uprights, no blocked kicks, no big returns, no massive punts, etc. Honestly, their punter outshined ours.

    Things to keep in mind:

: As Smart mentioned, the Interception/Pick 6 was pure luck. We had no Interceptions beyond that one and had several opportunities and came up with none of them.

: Last year we AVERAGED giving up only 77 yards per game on the ground, but gave up 134 today.

: Teams like this don't have the DEPTH that we do, so often it's not as much "finding your rhythm" in the second half, but them being absolutely "gassed" with no real backups.

: They had 10 penalties against us giving us numerous opportunities to capitalize.

I think the best comparison is against last year's second game of the year vs Samford in which we won 33-0.

Last Year's Stat for Samford | This Year's Stat vs UT Martin

    1st Downs: 3 | 15 (15 freaking First Downs!)

    Total Yards: 128 | 262

Time of Possession: 19:57 | 29:35 (Our defense was on the field nearly as much as theirs was)

    Penalties: 5 | 10

Anyway, my opinion is that overall it was a "C" or "C+" game. We really struggled in the 1st quarter and 17-0 was not great at the half (Samford game was 30-0 at the half). Surprisingly, our offense statistically looks pretty similar to that game as we went 5-13 on 3rd downs then too.

In terms of Bobo - it's too early to tell. Yes, there was nothing exciting about his calls, but then again that could also be design. Smart likes really conservative calls against weaker opponents. Hopefully, he was "more up his sleeve" against stronger opponents.

Mews - Wow! Superstar in the making.

Beck - Difficult to evaluate, adequate performance. Definite potential for a polished QB, but certainly looking like the 4 Star Rating he achieved in High School.

Vandagriff/Stockton - Sucks that Vandagriff lost out on those 2 plays... BUT, he did a pump (which you can't do at this level) and could have possibly been sacked on one of those. Definite talent there. Stockton has DEFINITELY got some exciting things coming - I bet he will be our starter next year.

That was not even close to being a “B” game, so I disagree completely.

Did not come close to covering the spread in a home game basically at night(first one on 2 years 🙄🙄🙄)

Slept walked thru the first 2 quarters.

Did not play hungry or “eat off the floor” for the first 30 minutes.

Beck was not poised or in control of the offense, looking at his wrist of plays multiple times with less than 20 seconds on play clock.

Vanilla play calling and not exciting for the players or us fans.

Offensive line play on run blocking was pathetic for such a high caliber group of men and returning players; They should be embarrassed by that, in a half of football or not, please stop making excuses, that should NEVER happen against a team like that.

How many sacks did we register? One? That is not a B for what we have returning in the front seven; standards should be MUCH higher than that.

C+ would be a more apt grade for 2-time defending champions.

We shall see after the Ball state game whether it was just a “week 1 glitch” like apparently a few many fans want to write it off as.

I don't bother grading games like this. Not much more than a glorified Spring Game. Working on depth, communication, experience, etc..

Guarantee we would have seen a different UGA Team, if they had played a Power 5 team. You get out of these games, what you put into em. Kirby emptied the bench. Moreover....he'll do it again, this week against Ball St..

We may get to see some of the walking wounded play a little bit, in case they're needed against S. Carolina. But, I'm not expecting an 80 point explosion or the roasting of Cardinal Breast on a stick, or anything. Running up the score on over-matched, out-manned opponents...has never been vogue, in Athens.

Having 2 starting offenses and 2 or 3 starting defenses, heading into the CFP, is the goal. You don't build that kind of depth and experience against the likes of Tennessee, Florida or Auburn...during the season. You do it against teams like The Dawgs faced last weekend and this weekend.

Bet Vandy, Bama, Oregon, Mich, Tenn and the others are happier than pigs in slop over their big-time wins over...who was it they played, again?. Lol...doesn't mean a thing, when you do what's expected. Their Fanbases aren't coming off back-to-back Natty's...so, I understand why those teams' HC's would want to feed em a little red meat, to get em excited. Why do Dawg Fans need that kind of patronage?.

For a Coach...the "W" is the most important thing. After that, player and team development would have to be at the top of the list. Fan and Media "Perception", while important for recruiting and Brand, are at or near the bottom of the list, in the 1st game of the season [unless it's FBS/SEC]. It gradually rises, on that list, each week, till it eventually tops the list, just below "Player and Team Development" & "W's"....at the end of the season.

I would think the "Bulldog Fanbase" would be on "Kirby's Page", by now. But, I've seen some comments and media reports, that leave me scratching my head. After 7 seasons...when has anybody seen Kirby value a "Blowout" over "Player development?".

I just saw an "Athlon" headline on "how the Dawg Nation was not happy with Beck".??? ****. After 1 game?. Wow...they're already trying to drum up controversy where there is none.

The funny thing about it, is....as with many other Dawg Fans...I watched a lot of games this weekend. I didn't see one single team...[including Bama, LSU, OSU & MICH]...with near the "experienced depth" that UGA has. Not one, could field 2 or 3 teams off their roster...each capable of playing "Winning Football". UGA can.

The Dawgs aren't "counting on" a Bryce Young or Marvin Harrison, to win games. They are counting on depth, commitment to a standard and connection (communication) to win games. You don't build that by leaving starters in, to "trounce hell out of people". All because, you're worried that your backups will give the game away, if you put em in too early.

UGA doesn't have that worry, in the Tech game or SECCG....because of games like this. So, I don't understand all the "Hand Wringing"...Lol. We know why they looked like that Saturday...and, why they'll look similar, this Saturday.

But....I do think, both Kirby and Mike will want to see the 1st Team Offense humming like it's supposed to, in the 1st half of the Ball St. game. You want to go into the Carolina Game with a "confident" Offense and Quarterback.

That's my opinion, anyway. You gotta feed the horse every once in a while. Kirby's been pretty wise about "when and where", to do it. Lol...he almost messed up, against Mizzou, last year...when it nearly got away from him. I don't think we'll see Him flying that close to the sun, again....for a while.

IMO....Beck looked like he did, Saturday, mainly because of the guys around him. Young and inexperienced in the backfield and at receiver. Kinda like a Spring Game or scrimmage. A couple of the WR's he'd been working with were in street clothes and Lovett has only been there a few months. It'll come together next week, in the 1sr half...then, more vanilla Ball, until Carolina. IMO

The Oline was facing a team committed to stopping the run, with 8 or 9 guys in the box. And, Kirby and Bobo were committed to running the ball. I suspect...This may have been discussed between HC's pregame, as I'm sure UTM's HC had no delusions of actually winning. They had to go to a running clock (or 12 minute clock) with one of their lesser opponents last year, which cut Kirby's workout short. You don't get as much out of a game like that.

What better practice, than for your front 5 to have to account for 7 or 8 guys on the vast majority of snaps. Both teams got something out of it...and, the Fans ain't happy with 48 points and a virtual shutout. Why?. What did people really expect, going into the game?

Do people really believe, what they saw Saturday, represents the entirety of UGA's off-season preps? A team is like a machine....you replace parts and there's a break-in period. You run it a little slower or you can damage it. UGA had a lot of new and damaged parts playing in that game...not to mention everybody on the bench.

To say the QB Position...with 3 QB's, all capable of starting, and all putting good plays on film...with a "Dukes Mixture" offense...graded that low, is ridiculous, to me. I know what "Kirby's standard" is...Dawg Nations seems to be all over the place. Lol

Next week...I predict a 65-10 score...most of it, in the 1st half, of course.

Total embarrassment and a lack of sportsmanship: Oregon hanging 81 on Portland St, The Okies hanging 73 on Ark St and Ole Miss hanging 73 on Mercer......THANK YOU Kirby Smart and Mike Bobo for engineering a game plan, knowing this was indeed a glorified spring game, which gave our opponent an opportunity to get better against over whelming strength, skill, and depth.Thank You again for elevating the sport of football by being the consummate sportsman!

"C" for the O-Line was a tad harsh.....the fact we allowed NO sacks merited at least a "B".....but add the fact we rushed 7 for 159 yds and had Vandagriff's scampers not been negated by questionable holding calls it would have been closer to 200 yds. Our O-Line are all sportsmen like their coaches. No need for over kill just to satisfy ravenous fans who only know scores....there is so much more to being an elite offensive line and always remember, Joe Moore is watching and their play Saturday sent a message....."we're more than just "maulers", we can follow a game plan with fineness.

It isn't about points but it is about calling good plays. If you call good plays the points happen. The plays were C- and would get us killed against better opponents.

I agree. This was a solid C minus effort on offense and a B minus on defense. We got gashed for way too many running yards. That's on the front 7.

So how do we fix that? We give the talent (JJ, JH, Damon Wilson, Jalon Walker) more reps when it counts in the first half. I think I saw enough already to know that Logue is not big enough to clog the middle and Chaz is not ready to stop the run to the outside. Please put JJ, JH and Damon WIlson in there and use Jalon Walker instead of Sorey. The middle linebackers got lost back there because, because, because the DL up front wasn't holding the line or pushing the OL back. Get the freshman big boys in there immediately please.

I really don't want to hear any more about this O-line being the best or one of the best in the country. LOL! Grade C? Ten Martin manhandled our guys.

<disclosure> I posted this under another article, but, it applies here, as well. I'm not going to say anything else about it, till I've had a chance to study the game. A 7" screen with no "Back/Slo Mo/Pause" button is a challenge. Lol

When have any of you ever known for Kirby to go into a game like this...with Ball St. next on the schedule...and NOT look for "coaching opportunities"?

I think...now, we see why Kirby won't allow people to watch Scrimmages. They don't know what they're looking at, and take away the wrong impression. Like observing a "painting" before it's finished.

We won't see the real UGA for at least 2 weeks....if then...IMO. Why would Kirby rush "the process", with the September schedule UGA's sittin' on? He is taking full advantage, to develop his players. Isn't that what everybody said, was the reason for...having no dropoff between '21 and '22...."Kirby develops players". That doesn't happen by running up the score on a HS Team and keeping guys on the bench.

Based on previous seasons, under Kirby...I believe the main focus of this game, was building for next year and, the year after...as well as providing valuable reps to guys that will be bench-bound after the 4th or 5th game. Those same guys may be counted on to fill injury shoes, late in the season. That's just, what Kirby does.

Are you not happy with Kirby's methods or results? Lol...now, I get why Bama would want to put their best foot forward in week 1. They have a showdown with Texas this week. UGA, on the other hand...has Ball State.

I don't know if you noticed...in fact, I only heard one person mention it...the game slowed down for Beck in the second half. He looked like different QB. He is going to light it up eventually [when they take the cuffs off and as he gets his receivers back]...and, we'll see him display a little more mobility in the pocket, going forward.

Confidence is extremely important to the QB position, as you know. It's one thing to "think you are ready"...it's another, to step behind center, under the lights and "know you are ready". I think Beck knows he's ready, now. But, we won't know...for sure...until after the Carolina Game.

BTW....Rosemy-Jacksaint will be back this Saturday. He was suspended for the UTM Game.

We just, need to be a little more patient with the schedule, this year and understand this is part of the "Kirby Process". That's what drives these things....not "Fan & Media Hype". And...I see a lot of "overreactions"...from both.

Go to work boys. Do your thang. Goooo Dawgs!
