    I agree that Georgia's linebacker play has not been great, including the defensive line. Dawgnation has been spoiled with great defensive play, but this year at this point...the defense has not met the standards set by the previous defenses. They were exposed on the edges and looked very slow on Saturday.

    Wondering what the big challenge was for the ILBs. Obviously, the absence of a line-wrecker in the middle of the D line has been a problem but was there something else? Were the offensive linemen getting too easily to the 2nd level to block the LBs? Maybe it is just me but I really didn’t see a major problem with the inside game; it seemed to be more of an edge containment issue for the runs. The article rightly points out the lion’s share of the rushing yards came on outside runs so not sure what role the ILBs would play in stopping that.

    Gonna get a lot more difficult over the next few weeks so hoping they somehow figure it out. Go DAWGS

    What does a Justin Fields comment of being on the roster have anything whatsoever to do about that section of the article about the defense? Journalism 101, don’t put anything in the article that doesn’t have anything to do with it.

    Sorry Connor, but the schedule is still just as soft as ever. UT and Ole Miss were ranked at the beginning of the season, UK is the only change to the schedule strength, ranked now because probably not 25 other undefeated teams left. And SC, auburn and florida are still trash. Because UGA struggled against 2 of them so far, does not make their schedule tougher. Sorry.

    The Dawgs and Kentucky are the only two teams in the SEC that are undefeated.....I would contend that Kentucky has played a softer schedule than The Dawgs....the common opponent being Ball St. We both hung 40 plus on The Cardinal's, Kentucky allowed 14 we only allowed 3....be that as it is, Kentucky is ranked at #20....our schedule is only pertinent if we lose to anyone one. I agree, our edge and LB's had an off game. I'm not worried, just look at the talent, their commitment and their desire to win....Kentucky will present a golden opportunity for redemption! It's a bit early, but the writing on the wall is spreading like graffiti on a box car from Mexico.....by the end of the season there will be no better choice for The Most Outstanding Football Player for the 2023 season than Brock Bowers.....if only the voters will look past the one dimensional glitz of passing and rushing yards, and give due consideration to multi dimensional accomplishments of rushing, blocking and receiving....and I'm still holding out for a pass or two from BB!

    ***** Tiger Fans please forgive....you too are presently 5-0 and I hope you keep that winning until we meet at Sanford.

    Speaking of Journ101: I’m sure Nate & Ally are nice people, but who cares? (If there was some link to football, I missed it as I stopped reading.) Maybe ESPN will pick up their story - more programming and to me at least as interesting as the Pro Tight End & and Tiffany Swift.

    I'm getting married in 2 weeks. I live in the enemy territory of Knoxville with my die-hard TN Vol girlfriend. She's still a keeper. We'll make it work...somehow. :)

    Correct…not an “overwhelming juggernaut”…yet. The fact is, “the Dawgs are 5-0 and haven’t played their best football…yet! This team is building character! We were on the road in a tremendously hostile environment. Auburn got virtually every break to be had and we still won! There’s a lot to be excited about!

    @budknox310

    In the early 2000s there was a decent little movie - back when Hollywood still knew how to make such things - about guys going camping called "Without A Paddle" or something (again back when Hollywood made movies about regular people doing regular things like going camping). The guys were set upon by a bear. One of the guys told the others "you can't outrun a bear so just stand very still and the bear will leave." But one guy didn't listen and just ran off as fast as he could. The other guy ran up beside him and said "what are you doing? I told you that you can't outrun the bear!" The first guy replied "Oh I don't have to outrun the bear. I just have to outrun one of you other guys."

    Same goes here. UGA doesn't need a "tough schedule." They just need a schedule tougher than a one loss team from one of the Pac-12, Big 10, Big 12, ACC and Notre Dame. Which won't be that hard. The 4 remaining teams in the ACC: Louisville, FSU, UNC, Duke. Good luck with that. The Big 12 has more, but they won't in a couple of weeks. I would be concerned about the Big 10 if its 4 teams with the best athletes - Maryland, Michigan, Penn State, Ohio State - weren't all in the east where they will beat each other up. Notre Dame has already lost to Ohio State, meaning they will either eliminate or be eliminated by Southern Cal.

    Speaking of USC-West, the only conference that worries me is the Pac-12. They have done an outstanding job in leveraging the transfer portal. While Utah getting upset reduces the chance of this happening, they are the only conference who - between USC, Oregon and Washington - have a real shot at producing a pair of 11-1 teams this year like the Big 10 did last year.

    Refresh my memory, did justin fields play inside linebacker at Georgia?

  • UGADad20UGADad20 Posts: 1,975 ✭✭✭✭✭ Graduate

    BB's had a great game and won the game for UGA. He looks like himself now after looking banged up early in the year. But there is a fine line between riding a player and running him into the ground. CKS is aware of this. Media and fans are not. This is not fantasy football or video game football. If you ride BB's into the ground early you risk not having him available when you need him late in the season.

    I have seen Justin Fields blamed for a lot of UGA woes but never for giving up 200+ yards rushing. JK! CR just trying to reference how long it has been.

    @Henddawg

    Regarding the role of inside linebackers on outside runs, they play a major role. Think back to years past, especially to Roquan and Nakobe, the inside linebackers played sideline to sideline with intense speed and they made a high percentage of stops on outside runs. This year, I think without the interior monsters like Jordan and Jalen, the inside linebackers don't have the confidence to cheat outside and make those plays as often.

    The Justin Fields reference was unnecessary as a time stamp because he had already told us the year (2018) that it happened. And, as others have stated, Fields didn't even play defense. If mentioning Fields, why not call on, say, D'Andre Swift??

    Anyway, Connor says the defensive lapses can't be blamed on any one group. Yet it's only the inside linebackers that he labels as "Losers." Not the D-Line or the outside linebackers, though I suspect both of those position groups had a lot to do with us giving up nearly 300 yards rushing. In fact, why not just put it that way, "Loser: Georgia's rush defense." Then everything else he said in his explanatory paragraphs would have fallen into place. God, if the powers-that-be at DawgNation would just let me use my little old Grady College journalism degree to edit their work, I would be so happy! Go Dawgs!
