How Nick Saban’s retirement impacts the Georgia football program
ATHENS — Kirby Smart has always been incredibly respectful of Nick Saban. It comes from all their shared time together, spanning across college football and the NFL.

I think Bama will try and take Sark first, but I would be real surprised if they get him. Like Florida, more than likely Bama's reign is over, and they will eventually fall to a second level for a while. These super coaches don't come along very often.
Truly outstanding article... almost like a "checklist" of what to watch for in the coming weeks. Much appreciated!
Alabama's players are NOT better than Georgia's-Absurd statement not backed up by facts
I expect for Greg Byrne to announce Saban's successor within the week if not sooner......need a proven HC, proven recruiter, NFL experience, proven QB developer, someone without an outrageous buy out, someone young enough to allow for at least a 10-15 year or longer stay, and finally someone Saban OK's......IMHO, Trent Dilfer is the man.
I'll be very surprised if Lanning or Sark take the job.
Year of retirement. Within 2 days, 3 of the winningest coaches in history retire. Carroll, Saban, and now Belichick. Makes you worry for the sport.
I think, just my opinion, but I believe Nick experienced the wild, wild, west of NCAA football this sason and said, "I'm out! Players no longer loyal to schools or want to be at a certain school based on their winning tradition or to play for NC's. Time to, "sit back at the lake and watch the geese sh#t." HIs famous words.
His words about doing things the "right way" are cryptic. Those weren't pulled out of thin air.
Nothing less than a Dabo or Lanning will satisfy the fan base. Dabo could be starting to feel some heat from Clemson's base. THEy haven't been relevant lately.
I despise all things Alabama, but I recognize that we need them to be strong. Great teams need a nemesis to stand toe-to-toe with them and push them out of their comfort zone. Alabama is Georgia’s nemesis, and vice-versa. If Alabama drop off too far it could work against us.
Coach Smart will be the next master by which all coaches and teams are measured. I can easily see him dropping 25 years in Athens. At some point we, too, will be where Alabama is now. Until then let’s enjoy the success and be thankful for our blessings!
Go Dawgs!
Kirby isn't going to coach for 25 years at Georgia. He's said as much. If we get ten more years from him we're blessed.
Very surprising development. Though, from the outside, Saban has looked like he was tiring of the whole circus that is CFB. On one hand glad to see him go. He has been a major roadblock to UGA. On the other hand, wanted another shot at beating him in '24. Did not relish the thought of having to beat Saban 3 times in '24.
UGA, UT(X), and probably OR are all better jobs than AL. Maybe Lanning's ties to the SE and the SEC trump the advantages of the OR job and he decides to take the job. AL may have to settle for Kiffin.
Even with his faults, it is difficult to not respect CNS for what he has built and accomplished. Saban/AL becoming 2nd Chance U for coaches/men in need of career rehabilitation was admirable and provided a service that many were able to utilize. Who fills that void? CKS is too obsessed with winning to be distracted w/coaching rehab tangents. Maybe later in his coaching career.
CKS being on top of his roster management probably hurts UGA right now with AL players becoming available for transfer. UGA already 6(?) over the 85. You want Haynes? More than BRob, RRob, AP3? Because w/7 RB's somebody will have to go. You want OL (from GA) Ferguson and Pritchett? You just got Truss and TRat back. No room for guys that want to start. Downs? Maybe there is room but Downs liked AL and OSU more than UGA. Bond? Just added 3(!) TP WR's. QB Sayin? Had room for Maiava .......
Will be interesting to watch what happens w/the AL roster. AL needs to name a successor quickly to salvage the roster and #2 2024 recruiting class.
