    ok, arresting the kid?

Come on. This could have happened to anyone. There’s no way to determine in the moment exactly how fast he was going. And if anyone has broken a tie rod on the front of a car you also realize most braking capabilities are limited as well. I’m not saying don’t cite him, but arresting?

So, the officers used circumstantial evidence to not only issue citations but make an arrest. No evidence that pedestrians were present when the accident occurred only that "the area where the incident took place" is "an often filled pedestrian area". I would be interested to know how many arrests are made, let's say in a 30-day period, under similar circumstances among the general population of Clarke County. Would the Mayor of Athens been jailed if the above scenario was exactly the same and he was the driver? I'm not saying an arrest shouldn't have been made only that officers apply the law equally.

It boggles the mind that they would choose to make an actual arrest over something that ends up getting a $26.00 bond. Like, seriously. If nothing else tells you how exceedingly minor this infraction was, the microscopic bond amount should do it.

I feel like these officers had too much time on their hands. Write a ticket and move on. There's nothing in GA state law that requires an arrest in a situation like this; the law gives officers the "discretion" to issue a citation or make an arrest. For some odd reason, they chose arrest.

I find it funny that all these comments are blaming the police officers, as if they have it in for the football team. I’d lay money that the vast majority of them support University of Georgia athletics but they do have a job to protect the public.

It seems pretty obvious that Hughley was speeding, driving recklessly (video footage) and DID have an accident. Mondon was speeding in a dangerous area. It doesn’t make them bad people but it does make them in the wrong.

Good grief, people. Can we not just accept that yes, these kids did not smart things and there are consequences?

Speed limit 25 mph. 200 foot skid marks. Missing front tire. If you were going 25 mph and your front tire came off you wouldn't go 25 feet let alone 200. Excessive speed and reckless driving are definitely grounds for arrest. Sometimes lessons being learned the hard way are the only way some knuckleheads learn.

According to the "Skid speed calculator" (google it) a car with 75% braking (3 wheels) would have to be going 53 mph to leave a 200' skid mark. Sound about right?

For the mechanically challenged here the '17 300 can come with a 5.7L V8 (Hemi?) w/363 hp. It is a RWD car. You have any idea the force needed to rip a front wheel off a car (assuming the 5 lug nuts are tight)? "We were going the 25 mph speed limit officer". SMH.
