I agree with Bill the majority of the time, but this "cupcake" argument above misses the point, I believe: NIU vs Notre Dame was a perfect example of "that's why you play the game" (yes, I know they're not FCS, but the expectations were similar; the occasional FCS vs FBS upset is pretty exciting when it happens, IMHO). Plus I'm not sure what team could make it through a CFP season that was a schedule of nothing but SEC caliber teams 😄

We don't ever cover the spread in games like this, but there is a simple reason. Kirby plays 3rd and 4th strings to get them game experience. Most other teams just play their starters to run up the score. It's more important to Coach Smart to get all of these kids experience. You never know when, due to injuries, they will be called on to play more quality minutes. They need to be ready.

    What sportsbook offered that spread?
Honest question, is that a legit line, and if so, who offered it?

I feel like you overheard someone say “Georgia is favored by 53.5!” and you just blindly believed it.

To Classof98: I feel like you just commented and didn't know what you were talking about. Sound rude? Well, that's what your comment was like. And, by the way, it was FanDuel Sportsbook that had the 53.5-point spread. Like I said, it was ridiculous, but that's what they posted.

To Kudzu: There's a big difference between playing an FBS program and playing an FCS program. I'm not proposing that Georgia play nothing but SEC caliber teams. There are a lot of mid-majors who also can be contracted for games without a home-and-home deal. I just feel that if UGA is going to charge the same ticket price for all games, they all should at least be FBS teams, not one from a lower division.

These games generally end up doing more harm than good. They build over confidence, exaggerated expectations, poor execution, & laziness. This past Sat saw the majority of teams that played “cupcakes” week one struggle Sat irrespective of who they were playing. Let’s face it. The days of 4 cupcakes & 8 conference games are over. Whether it’s the “Power 4” or the “Dominant Two”, we are headed to divisional play with 4 divisional winners & some number wild card teams from each league/conference resulting in an NFL style playoff system. The money is just to big. These cupcake games need to be preseason games during August vs part of the regular season. It’s coming sooner rather than later.

they also get backups valuable live game reps which helps for development and we might need them later.
