Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo worth talking about at Sugar Bowl, for all the right reasons
NEW ORLEANS — Mike Bobo has led more prolific Georgia offenses before, but this might be his best coaching job.
Comments
Another great read, Mike. It's been painful as a spectator to watch some of the play this year; but when you put it all into perspective, Bobo has been able to cobble together Ws. And that's all that matters. Couple more, please?! And I hate to say this, but Bobo better have Pugs ready, too, since tough-as-nails Gunner doesn't shy away from contact and the risk of getting dinged up. Go Dawgs!
Good article Mike. In addition to all the issues our offense has encountered this year we need to also recognize how huge the losses of Brock and Ladd have had on our team. We knew those guys were really good, but their production this year in the NFL as rookies has made me realize they were even better than I thought……In fact, they are both GREAT!!! I’ve noticed that some fans on this site are quick to bash Bobo, but are slow to recognize his accomplishments. I’m glad you wrote an article highlighting Bobo’s challenges and successes. Go Dawgs and Happy New Year!!!
Could any other offensive coordinator in the country have taken this team this far under the circumstances?
Huh?
Really?
What do you think Monken could do with this team on offense?
Or how about Buster F?
Why are you not talking about James Coley?
Look at what he has done to Georgia’s WR room in less than one season since Cortez Hankton left for the same position at LSU!
Leading the NCAA in dropped passes!?!?
And ya’ll know how it turned out when Coley was Smart’s OC for that one season, right? He was ran out of town very quickly.
I do not ever recall this Georgia team, going all the way back to the Donnan era, leading the SEC or the NCAA in dropped passes.
Here is Coley’s job description: Coley's main role at UGA will be to recruit and develop wide receivers. He's known for his ability to work with others and is considered a top recruiter in South Florida.
Maybe some hard questions should be asked about Coley and his role, and why in such a very short period of time our Dawgs have went from having WR’s and TE’s drafted to the NFL and setting records to what is currently a 💩 storm.
Look at what has happened to Beck this season compared to last? What is the deal there?
Coley is not the answer, and that is evident with the results of the WR room.
UGA will go as far as the O-line takes them. They've looked really good at times and not so much others. Now that they're healthy, just keep up the intensity and go to the whistle blows. GATA!!!
Bobo has done a commendable job (even though I/we have questioned his play calling numerous times).
The one thing that Mike didn't mention is that in addition to all the challenges, injuries, and attrition that has happened this season with the offense there is ONE GLARING ISSUE THAT has affected the Dawg's season as much as anything else:
39 or so dropped passes.
Bobo doesn't control that, but I guarantee you that if we had back even half of those passes as completions then we would have probably won one or two more games.
On3 is reporting that Brock Vandagriff has formally retired from college football.

"Run the darn ball"? I thought UGA only has 2 running plays. The occasional jet sweep and the frequent dive into the line. That is all that CMB seems to call.
Should UGA's running game be better now? ETN should be healthier and Frazier seems to have gotten over the the freshman jitters. Have we seen a long break out run this season? We could finally see one in this game. Hopefully the OL is all 100% and finally plays like everyone expected them to play this season.
As I type this I see the comments about BVG. Sorry to hear that. Wanted to see how well he developed. When the season started and I saw BVG running every time like he was Earl Campbell. I thought "he won't last long running like that".
With a new QB (and punter and holder) It is even more important for UGA to play well in all 3 phases and play error/mistake free football. I expect GS will play pretty well and be able to execute the offense. The key will be for everyone, especially the QB, not make mistakes.
I wonder if he is going to declare for the NFL draft. He didn't have a good year at Kentucky but he has tremendous talent and a cannon of an arm.
Offensive lineman are not up to par. Wide receivers are not up to par. Both fall on Bobo and recruiting. Stop making excuses. To say he did the best he could given the circumstances ignores the reality that he made the circumstances. We ran the ball well when we got 5 stars with Pittman, because he recruited the best. Not only that, they performed like 5 stars, even if they weren't. They don't now. Smart has a tough lesson to learn. Don't hire friends. If you do, you must hold them accountable or sooner or later, you will become Dabo S.
that is exactly correct.
I do believe Bobo has done a serviceable job this year. But we all know he’s been thinking about the drops while up in the box calling plays also. Like, “ I can scheme em open, but can’t catch it for them.”
I have never been a James Coley fan. I say if they want to keep him on staff, please do and let him just recruit. But let’s bring in someone else to develop the wide outs. He’s had 2 seasons at Georgia occupying staff positions and his position group has been a liability both times.
Let’s bring in Hines Ward. That way even if we can’t catch or get open, we will be the guaranteed best blocking group of wideouts in the country.
BVG needs more playing time at the CFB level. He would not be drafted based on his play last season. He could be an UFA. But he needs to play.
He can always continue school and enter the spring TP. If he changes his mind and if UGA loses (as expected) a QB (Rashada) to the TP , BVG could find his way back to UGA. A lot of "ifs" but why not continue to get education, training and coaching in the UGA system? His father is a HS football coach. Is coaching in his future? What better place to learn than at UGA?
Bobo doesn't coach the OL or WR's. He has very little to do with coaching them. He works with the QB's.
The #1 thing that CKS looks for in his assistant coaches is the ability to recruit. Talent trumps development in his eyes. You just said it, "we ran the ball well when we had 5 stars with Pittman". So you have to blame CKS. Not for hiring friends but for hiring recruiters instead of developers/coaches.
Coley is an Ace recruiter. Searels is not. Recruiting is not as important as it used to be. Money recruits now not good recruiters. May be time for a shift in philosophy to assistant coaches that develop and coach and let the UGA brand and NIL money do the recruiting.
Sorry UGA Dad, I couldn't disagree with you more - bobo is the head OC, and it's his job to get the coaches to teach the kids. His job to get the coaches that recruit. Bobo has a lot to do with recruiting and teaching. He chose Searls, and they have been together for years. Even back to the time when MR was head coach, when we couldn't run the ball. Bobo should know better. Recruiting is as important as it always was, but they have some weak links in the coaching staff that need to be addressed. Just ask our late starting QB, who had his ligament torn by a Defensive lineman. It wasn't the play call, it was our line play. There's been no shift - UGA is the place to develop kids. We have to recruit and teach. With a program like Georgia, you can hire as many as you want. But some of the coaches are B minus, not A level. We are 15 out of 16 in the SEC in rushing yards. No one can argue with stats.
There is so much wrong with what you said I am not sure where to start. First, CMB was an offensive analyst in '22 when CSS was hired. He was not OC. Offensive analyst's do not hire OL coaches. . Not that it would have mattered. CKS does all the assistant coach hiring. CMB is not hiring any other position coaches.
OC is a "coordinator" position. He does not coach the OL or WR's That's why they have position coaches. He does work with the QB's now because Buster Faulkner left for GT. The OL and the WR's position coaches coach and develop them.
Never said recruiting is not important. ACE recruiters may not be as important as it used to be relative to on field coaching , strategy and development. That is because NIL trumps everything else at this point. Money is becoming the dominant factor in successfully signing players. We see it all the time. We saw it with Justus Terry a few weeks ago. He has been recruited by UGA's best for 5-6 years and signed with TX after they swooped in at the 11th hour with a big check. We saw it with Jamaal Jarratt. USC still smarting over UGA flipping Isaiah Gibson and Christen Miller. USC targeting UGA players (JJarratt, Bear) and recruits (Jadon Perlotte).
Not sure you can rightfully blame the OL for CBeck's injury. In that situation a Hail Mary is the only call UNLESS you are a coach that doesn't want to take a chance getting your QB hurt on a very low percentage for success play. CBeck rolled out of the pocket and took some giant wide up to try to heave the ball. Took way too long to get rid of the ball.
I said, "May be time for a shift in philosophy to assistant coaches that develop and coach and let the UGA brand and NIL money do the recruiting." Meaning get coaches better at development (isn't that what you said?) and let the money do the heavy recruiting lifting.
Personally I like the UGA recruiting philosophy evolution. CKS using NIL judiciously. Smart move long term to keep team harmony and rewarding production and development. The evolution is UGA is taking more developmental type recruits. Can't buy everybody. They cost less and have a good ceiling IF they can be developed.
