Final grades from Georgia football season-ending defeat to Notre Dame
NEW ORLEANS — Georgia coach Kirby Smart made sure to credit Notre Dame for how it was able to make all the key little plays on Thursday.

I wonder how many games this season the O-line scored a "D" or worse?
What happened to the Dawgs this season?
Well, overall I'd say our defense was pretty good and almost up to par for a Kirby team. Sure, there were mistakes and we weren't as dominant as we have been in the past, but the group was respectable.
The main issue this season was the offense. I think the Dawg's offensive problems were a culmination of bad luck, poor execution, and key injuries. We also were faced with the hardest regular season schedule EVER. No more easy SEC East teams to beat up on enabling the Dawgs to pretty much waltz into the SECCG. Nope. And you can rinse and repeat for next season.
The O-line play was very inconsistent due to injuries and just not executing. Coaching? Probably some of it. The RB room was limited all season due to injuries, and the inconsistent O-line play added to the lack of a dominant running game. Beck threw countless interceptions this season, and the Dawgs led the nation in dropped passes (39 or something like that). Turn even half those big play passes into catches, and the outcome of the season could have been different. Add all those offensive issues up, and it's kinda surprising we even won as many games as we did. But, you could usually count on the defense to bail us out.
SO, in summary, it was an uncharacteristically strange season for the Dawgs, especially on offense. So, Kirby has got lots of work to do in the off-season. Teams are getting better, and the transfer portal is a big reason. Currently, 7 of the Top 10 transfer portal teams are in the SEC.
Stop recycling old friends and coaches whose time has passed . Look at the success young coaches are having . Kirby is the best but his staff can go . When a team has 2 weeks two weeks to prepare and come out lost like they did against Florida and Alabama it’s not the players . Pathetic showing yesterday .
o line: F
It’s unfair to grade the rbs when the o line is so abysmal.
Wide outs : F
Yes they caught passes early, but that’s their job….to catch the ball. Wide open drops and not coming down with contested catches have been the problem all year.
Qb: A
Gunner performed extremely well. I’m elated about this kids ceiling.
Overall defense: A
Consider how much ND was holding and we still kept them in check. Very pleased.
if we see all these things I’m sure the staff does as well. All in all with those drops and no line play I am surprised we won as much as we did.
This is a results based business and UGA has to fire Coley and Searles. I know the grass isn’t always greener on the other side but their position group’s performance this year wasn’t even average. UGA led the country in dropped passes and still made the playoffs and won the sec. Let that sink in.
Go dawgs!
Matt Luke—don't you want to get out of Clemson, SC? What a POS town that is!!
We miss Sam Pittman. Why can't we get some playmakers at the wide receiver position? Our wide receiver group as a whole doesn't seem to be able to get separation, they aren't successful on the 50/50 throws. The running back room was snakebit all year but without an O Line that's dominant what can you expect.
What's the common denominator of our offensive problems?
Overall we had an inconsistently good year. Happy New Year everyone….
Dawgs need a couple of stud receiving targets and some better offensive tackles. That’s my bottom line(s).
terrible game in every way. I am very worried about next year's potential, as we really do not have a QB capable of winning an SEC title. The portal is our only hope. Stockton's ceiling is as the main backup.
Parker Jones should never see a sideline again.
Smart needs to make some significant coaching changes. The "which team will show up today" phenomenon is squarely on the backs of the coordinators. They have let Kirby Smart down. Bobo is a liability to the team and it seems everyone but Kirby Smart knows it. He is wealth today compliments of UGA. It is way past time he went away for his own honor if nothing else.
The receivers room was a joke this year. Coaching. Who is in charge of the offense? Bobo. The offensive line significantly underperformed this year? Who is in charge of the offense? Bobo with help from Searles. They both need to go away.
Bottom line is that the team has slowly atrophied every year since 2021. Unless changes are made, we will depart from the club of elites next year.
Go Dawgs.
Everything offense starts with the O-line. Can they run block, can they pass protect? Does the OC fully understand the offenses limitations and scheme around them? It's not enough to just keep saying we need better from our O-line. at some point it just is what it is and you work around it as best you can.
From what one set of TV pundits were saying before the game was CB had the fastest or one of the fastest getting rid of the ball times of all College QB's. In Gunner's limited time leading up to the Notre Dame game his release/getting rid of the ball via tha pass was one of the slowest. and herein lies part of the problem.
From those stats what we see in hind sight was CB was propping up the O-line's pass pro by making quick decisions and getting rid of the ball and in effect made them look better than they really were. The point was proved by Gunner not getting rid of the ball as fast as Carson which led to the sacks, and pressures.
Stockton deserves a higher grade IMO. Even without handicapping for his first start, 234-1-0 is at least a B performance.
Considering that his first start came against a good defense with a porous blind side in a high-pressure game, you have to be excited about his potential.
gotta disagree on the bobo thing. I get it, the offense s u c k e d. And bobo was the coordinator, but he didn’t coach the wide outs and o line every day. That is on the position coaches. The purpose of their job is to keep the oc from having to coach them up. The oc is mostly about scheme and it’s impossible to scheme successfully when the execution is in question.
in other news, wow what a difference when coach boom is around! I say UGA goes and offers muschamp whatever he needs to bring him back from vandy in order to keep Will on the sidelines!
Pretty accurate ratings in my opinion. What a tough year and yet this team somehow found a way to keep winning and eventually end up with the SEC crown. DAWGS just ran out of time and some luck last night. Stockton looked really good and I'm excited for the future with him and a healthy, consistent offense. That was the soft point for this team and it never really got better. So many injuries for the line and RBs and for whatever reason, the WRs just couldn't consistently catch.
I seem to be in the minority with much of this being on the players vs. coaches, but there certainly has to be accountability at all spots. Not sure what the issue was with the O line, but someone sure needs to figure that one out. Either players, coaching, or just lack of cohesiveness, but it was the back breaker for this team.
Finished better than probably should have given all the challenges and now have the long, long wait for next year. Maybe Santa left some receivers that can hang onto the ball.
So, in games like this there are basically 2 scenarios: 1) You play so well that you could've beat anybody or 2) You beat yourself. We beat ourselves.
In addition to the sacks, Stockton was on the run and made some decent desperate attempts avoiding a sack. He wasn't able to run. THEY forced the ball out numerous times, we did not. We didn't have one INT. We were 2-12 on 3rd downs and 0-3 on 4th. We weren't prepared to play Notre Dame and we didn't play like a champion. We had no shot.
It's definitely time to "clean house" on the offensive coaching side. Bobo CAN call a great game, but it only seems like it's after a humiliating loss. He can't adapt on the fly. O Line HAS had great games but they've also had games where they were totally embarrassed. WRs have had the worst performance of any college football team. You think maybe we need someone new there?
So, I take a look at our WR coach and here is what Wikipedia says:
"Coley was hired by Mark Richt's replacement at Georgia, Kirby Smart, on January 3, 2016, to be the program's new wide receivers coach. On January 11, 2019, following the departure of former Georgia offensive coordinator Jim Chaney, he was promoted to offensive coordinator following the 2018 season.[6] After a season where the Bulldogs struggled to create explosive plays and ranked 61st in total offense, Coley was relieved of his coordinator duties and was given the title of assistant head coach."
The guy was so bad as an OC, he was demoted. We have NEVER had elite WRs. You think maybe it's time to treat him as an EMPLOYEE and not as a FRIEND?
the o line was an F.
I'll disagree about the RB grade, as I think we actually ran well between the tackles, at least in the first half, which is all I saw. We averaged better than 4 ypc after the first series and not counting sack minuses, but I think Bobo became afraid to run after the fumble. Speaking of that play, why was Delp (or Luckie don't remember which it was) lined up so far outside the last lineman. Everyone in the stadium knew what the play was gonna be; I even texted my sons "We're owning the LOS, short yardage so far." But Delp was too far out to even touch the guy who forced the fumble. I was also frustrated we didn't run when we had the ball for the 3 play series with 3.5 mins in 2nd qtr. Chew up some clock and some yardage and the end of half plays out differently.
