Hey folks - as a member of the DawgNation community, please remember to abide by simple rules of civil engagement with other members:
- Please no inappropriate usernames (remember that there may be youngsters in the room)
- Personal attacks on other community members are unacceptable, practice the good manners your mama taught you when engaging with fellow Dawg fans
- Use common sense and respect personal differences in the community: sexual and other inappropriate language or imagery, political rants and belittling the opinions of others will get your posts deleted and result in warnings and/ or banning from the forum
- 3/17/19 UPDATE -- We've updated the permissions for our "Football" and "Commit to the G" recruiting message boards. We aim to be the best free board out there and that has not changed. We do now ask that all of you good people register as a member of our forum in order to see the sugar that is falling from our skies, so to speak.

My heartfelt condolences to You my good Brother. I lost my Daddy way back in 1993 to cancer. You never quite get over it. Soon I’ll be six years older than my Daddy was ( May of this year Lord willing) and it’s kind of surreal.
My heart goes out to you and Kirby and All who have lost one or both of their parents. You sort of live in a fog for quite a while or at least I did. Especially when you had a good relationship with them. Prayers for you and family and Kirby and family. 🙏
I certainly don’t mean to be callous or inconsiderate. But does anyone happen to know what Mr.Sonny’s age was ? Just curious.
I read an article that states he was 83, i dont know how accurate the article is (turns out it wasn't accurate at all) since I couldn't find anything else stating his birthday, or age.
Thank you for that info. my Brother. This is a sad time for all Dawgs fans that love and appreciate Kirby. When One of us hurts we All hurt. Dawg Nation is One Big Family.
Here's another that reports he was 76. I think I'd tend to believe that article instead of the 1 I read that stated 83. He graduated from Samford in 1970, so 76 sounds more accurate.
Condolences to the entire Smart family. What a terrible thing to have happen on top of everything else that happened in NOLA. Almost incomprehensible. So, so sorry for your loss, Kirby. Know that we are here and praying for you and your family.
Losing your dad is a point in a man's life where everything is different. Especially when it's unexpected. It was for me. You realize more than ever your dad's strength, wisdom, patience, and humility. You understand why he spoke few words. He was the rock you leaned on.
Coach Smart is going to need time to get his head around this. Let's pray and ask our Lord to give him comfort, strength, and courage.
I'm sorry to hear about the Smart family's loss.
Go, Dawgs!
RIP Coach Sonny Smart.
A DGD and, from everything I have read and heard over the decades, a DGF (**** Good Father)..
May the Lord bless and keep the Smart Family wrapped in the grace of his love as he welcomes Sonny home.
So many people are going through so much pain and sadness it seems. I hope this will be a comfort to people.
"Control the controllables"….I'm sure Sonny lived by this mantra to the positive influence of so many….students, athletes, fellow teachers and administrators and absolutely every coach he came in contact with…..there comes a time in every persons life when it's time to let go of the controllables and go with our Creator….Sonny Smart may you rest in eternal peace.
