"Stockton was holding the ball, hoping one of his receivers would get open. But before one did, Monroe Freeling was beaten in pass protection."……just sayin……had TE helped Freeling just a little with block, there would not have been a ****, fumble recovery andd free score for ND…..maybe a whole different game outcome???….Just Sayin "BLOCKS are PARAMOUNT"

Hard to win with a sieve for an offensive line.

(Which doesn't mean Gunner shouldn't improve. He is likely to improve in the manner that a player improves from his first year as a starter to his second. The Dawgs very much need him to improve in multiple small ways. He clearly has that capacity, and a much better arm than many might have known. I also think he will be utilized more than Beck was as a deliberately-out-of-the-pocket passer.)

    Go, Dawgs!

This is a fair assessment by Connor. Gunner Does need to get better at several things. And we Know the O Line needs to get Much better. But I’m Also Hoping that WRs can get separation Faster and run smoother routes and Above All Catch the dawg gone ball !! Go Dawgs !!

if Gunner’s O-line is going to be this poor, he better grow a pair of eyes in the back of his head

I have ZERO worries about Gunner. He has done some impressive things and now that he is the definite QB for next year, he'll have plenty of time to refine. Lets put it this way, I doubt that very many of us would've felt that Beck (despite his far greater experience) would've made a positive difference. I'm not trying to be negative on Beck and honestly DO hope he has a great season at Miami, but it's clear that both the team and the fans are behind him.

I'm more disappointed that there aren't more assistant coaching changes for Georgia. We clearly have talent that is underperforming across the entire offensive side of the ball. I doubt there are many people that wouldn't take that Ravens OC over Bobo any day of the week. I would get excited with pretty much "cleaning house" with anyone dealing with OL, Receivers and such. If you can't fire then hire more assistants or something!

I like Gunner as a QB and leader. His teammates also seem to like playing with him. The team chemistry seemed much better with Gunner playing QB. He’s fiery and very competitive. The game slows down for players the more they play. Being thrown into the fire in the two most important games of the season is not ideal. However, he played well. He will only get even better.

Better play calling is a concern. Imo we need a new o-line coach as well.

@kirkhilles…definitely not worried about Gunner at this point. And yes, I do think we could use some new blood in the coaching room.

    Just announced today:

" Penn State has hired Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles in the same role, Nittany Lions coach James Franklin announced Monday.

Knowles heads to Penn State on a three-year deal with an average of $3.1 million per year, a program source said. Franklin has been trying to add Knowles to his staff since last week when the Buckeyes won the national championship."

Penn State should be in the Top 5 next season with the guys they have coming back. Knowles is a darn good defensive mind.

Montana Dawg - At least Penn state recognizes that changes are needed. I'm so disappointed in Kirby. I don't care who agrees. Sure, Wide receivers can't catch, so safeties move into the box to stop the run. But, we were going down hill last year. And they should have brought in more WR talent if they were concerned. Regardless of that, our QB was hurried, hit, and finally eliminated from the game by poor O line play. He chose to go play somewhere else. I don't see any sunshine on the horizon.

Gunner was two plays away from beating ND and neither one of them was his fault. If the offensive line plays well he'll be a leader and lead the Dawgs into the playoffs.

From what I've seen from Tom Fornelli, his football awareness is not too high either..

Thread after thread you read Numerous comments about the poor O Line coaching. On the article about Monroe Freeling having to have surgery he actually says “ not the best technique “. Who reaches the O Line players technique or is supposed to ?? That’s right Coach Searls.
Now if so many of us see this Why doesn’t Kirby ??

I’m Not defending Bobo and Yes I know the buck stops at his desk for Offensive production. But only Kirby can fire coaches ( well the AD can, but I’m talking immediate chain of command).

But I wonder would Bobo have been considerably better had the O Line been dominant and WRs catch the ball more consistently, Even if his play calling was suspect ?? I believe Yes he would have been significantly better.

Now it appears Kirby is not willing to fire Any of the coaches. But there might come a point where he will. So we must ask ourselves Who would he be most likely to fire ?? I suspect it would be Searls.

I Love Kirby and I’m Very grateful for all he’s done for the Dawgs. But his Achilles heel is he’s TO loyal. I’m afraid that over time if he’s not willing to make those changes it could cost Him and the Program that Elite status that he built. I sure hope I’m wrong. Go Dawgs !!
