Netflix Review: Gladiator II
Gladiator is one of my favorite movies of all time. Just awesome beginning to end. I have been anxiously awaiting a sequel ever since. Then finally it comes out! Then I see the first commercial for it and Denzel is a main character. Normally that is a good thing. Denzel is one of the greats. However….not in this case. Him as a Roman is just a bad fit. To get to the point…I turned it off about half way through. It's just bad. The opening scene was pretty cool…but then it goes downhill very fast. The fight scenes are lame, the graphics seem dated and boring, and it has a certain "300" feel to it. 300 is another really cool movie, and it's obvious they tried to copy some of its moodiness and dramatic visuals…but it doesn't work here.
Just hugely disappointed.

I'm a movie guy. The Good Shephard and the Irishman were two of my favorites on Netflix (?) Also, the Foreigner.
And speaking of Denzel Washington, I liked the Equalizer 1 and 2. But beware, Netflix has a lot of really bad movies. So I started watching some of their series.
Peaky Blinders, Gangs of London, and the Night Agent are all pretty good series imo.
Denzel is awesome….but completely miscast in this movie. Kind of ruined it for me.
He's getting older - surprisingly, or not, he seems to be getting fewer roles. Maybe it was just a good payday for him.
how so?
Because he best known for playing some sort of street-wise, fast talking tough guy. He's the best at that kind of role. That's kind of his bread and butter. It was difficult to see him play a period piece, particularly ancient Rome. The role wasn't well written and the movie was just bad. It didn't do him any favors for sure.
was he like a senator in their government?
He was the guy who own the Gladiators.
ah ok. I wasn’t a huge fan of the original movie. Don’t mind it, just not a rewatchable for me so I never worried about the sequel
Don't waste your time on it. What really surprised me was how cheesy the fights were in the Coliseum. The special effects are a big step backwards from the original. The dude riding the rhinoceros like a horse was just dumb and poorly animated. It just isn't as grand and spectacular as the original. I'm sure Russel Crowe just shook his head at this thing.
i really miss practical effects. CGI makes people lazy to a certain extent.
special effects peaked with Spielberg directing Jurassic Park and went downhill from there
Sure seems like it. Gladiator II special effects are almost comical.
it’s all cost saving measures. They just want to push out slop as fast and as cheap as possible. Pay the actors but not the people behind the camera who are necessary to produce high quality art.
compare that with Mad Max Fury Road which was all practical FX and I’m like can we not all do that?
That movie is wild!
