#1…..Stuff the rush, up the middle, on the outside, jet sweep, QB sneak……#1b…..Live free in the QB's head…if the QB knows that if he holds the ball longer than 3 seconds, a sack is guaranteed….If the QB has legs, refer back to #1 with speed.
He needs to make them watch the film of the UMass game. That should be quite the wake up call.
Football ain't hard…
Great talking…. Let's see the action…. Gotta walk the talk…. Every year since 2021 has been somewhat lesser than the year before. If we do not turn the graph line up this year, unfortunate, the rest of the world will drop us from the ranks of the truly elite no matter how well we recruit.
The Charlie Brown teacher reference explains a lot of the focus on "passion, fire and energy" this season in addition to the '24 D results (sans fireman Muschamp).
"passion, fire, and energy" seems to be the message this season. Have heard it all through the spring/summer. Replaces "you're either elite or you're not". The fact that coaches came up with that catchphrase this off season tells me they didn't see a lot of it last year. And that wasn't all on the QB.
Starting to worry a little about Modozie. First we hear from CR he looks "smaller than expected". Which probably makes him 6'2" 230 lb instead of 6'4" 245 lb . That's a problem when going up against SEC OT's. Now we hear "he's still learning" and "he needs more reps" to show what he can do. So much for being a plug and play pass rusher from OLB. Nice to have another body in the mix but most of the OLB production may come from Gabe Wilson and Isaiah Gibson.
"the group needs to simply tackle better". The defense should improve this season, if for no other reason than, by replacing DJackson and CChambliss with more talented players.
i think if our interior DL plays better than Stackhouse and Brinson that should have a ripple effect that helps the whole defense improve.
Last year's defensive squad seemed to forget tackling fundamentals…. Sometimes when the opposition is as or more talented, this happens because they are just faster than you. But we need to be more talented most of the time. Fix last year's tackling fundamentals and that will work wonders. The other consistent weakness was in not being able to fix the edge. Again, we can't let them run around us. Not good.
Looking forward to toe meeting leather in three weeks!
And, according to this article, a renewed focus on motivation and development.
I think you are putting too much emphasis on IDL. IDL's function is to jam up the OL, occupy blockers and allow the ILB's to flow to the ball with minimal resistance. . I think we say that somewhat consistently in '24. We didn't really see a stout presence against the run from the UGA ILB's last season.
That image of Riley Leonard running up the middle on a QB draw through a big hole right past a free running CJ Allen, untouched, in the 1st half of the ND/UGA is still fresh in my mind.
Brinson and Stackhouse played 5 years at UGA. They were mature players "developed" through the "iron sharpens iron" process at UGA. No one comes to mind when I think of guys expected to outperform '24 Brinson and Stackhouse CONSISTENTLY on this '25 DL roster.
well the emphasis comes from 21-22 when Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter and Devontae Wyatt were there causing problems and the LBs feasting. If McLeod, hall, and miller can do 75% of that it’ll be better than what Stackhouse and Brinson did.
You’re bringing up one play for CJ Allen. Not sure why you’re so down on him. I thought he improved as the year went along. Year 3 tends to be when UGA ILB make their move and lo and behold here we are.
The 3 guys you mentioned were all 1st rd picks. 75% of that is a big ask. Miller has been hurt as much as he's been healthy. Ditto for Hall. McCloud at least has been available to be on the field more than off. Though flashes of effectiveness is not enough to raise expectations that high.
CJ Allen's HS rating was anywhere from 48 to 145 after a late bump up. As a freshman he was forced to play and didn't hurt (or help) the team too much. He was an okay player on a team that didn't win the SEC. He was better his 2nd year but, after seeing 3 Butkus award winners in recent years, he comes off as not particularly strong at anything. Mondon (5th rd), RWilson and CJ Allen were all good CFB players slightly above average. It can be argued that Mondon only went that high because he was picked by Philly's Howie Roseman who loves UGA players.
It can be argued that Dumas Johnson was the better player with more impactful plays while at UGA. In 2 seasons of starting (28 games) CJAllen has 6 TFL and 1 sack. In JDJ's 1st 2 years at UGA he had 12 TFL and 6 sacks in much less playing time.
CJ Allen is an okay player. So far we have not seen much more than that. He is either still learning the defense or he isn't a very instinctual player. He had more tackles in his 2nd season but still looked lost in the defense.
JDJ got to play with Jalen Carter too. There’s a reason why he transferred. He wanted to be promised the starting job for 2024 and he wasn’t going to get that. Maybe I’m wrong but that tells me the staff thought more highly of Allen and Raylen despite the growing pains.
