Logically what you say is true. It has been the track record of UGA under CKS. I am starting to think that, with the NIL and TP evolution, we MAY see a corresponding evolution in QB management philosophy in the UGA program. How many QB's is CKS going to lose before he starts playing them early?
There is a lot of hype surrounding this player. It may or may not equate to production/wins at UGA. BUT at what point does CKS take a chance? CKS plays a lot of young players at every position but QB. I understand why but wonder if that continues. He may decide to ride this kid through the growing pains in order to keep him. The potential is that great.
UGA is a good spot for Curtis. I do think he signs w/UGA. I am starting to wonder if it would be his best move. UGA is down this year (not a championship contender is "down" for UGA under CKS) compared to previous years. W/o an OL upgrade UGA looks to be down next year too. It may be in Curtis' best interests to ride the bench for a couple of years while the OL is upgraded.
The question is how long will he stick around? "the high floor/low ceiling guy" (another reason UGA is "down" this year and possibly next) is what you said but that seems to be an apt description for the guys in the QB room now especially an experienced GS. Is CKS going to be satisfied with that, being a #5-10 ranked team, and letting "the best QB bound for Athens since the days of Matthew Stafford (JS)" walk from the program?
I just get the feeling that CKS, the total non gambler, might be ready to push all his chips into the center sooner rather than later and ride with this QB. Rather than lose him. UGA is a championship or bust program now. If QB is holding you back from contending for a championship and anything less than a championship is considered a bust, why not take your chances with the 5* QB?
Not trying to belittle the hype train regarding Jared but…BVG hype train comes to mind. It’s really really hard to figure out how an elite QB will pan out when they come from single and double A high schools…I’m excited to see what he can bring to the next level but in a guarded reserve manner. I think he’s going to be special, time will tell…
i think it depends on postseason accomplishments to whether or not Kirby will play Curtis. Kirby has a history though and it’s to go with thr steady hand over the more toolsy player.
He went with Eason in 2016 bc he didn’t really have a choice. In 2017 he wasn’t going to start a freshman until he had to bc of injury. And he played well enough to keep the job. Then he continued to play a steady hand over the higher rated prospect every year since.
Until proven otherwise I’m expecting Ryan Montgomery to be the starter in 2027 and Curtis to wind up at a place like Ohio or Alabama eventually.
To me it isn't just that the 5-stars aren't hitting as well as historically, it's also the element of "unknowns" that turn out to be outstanding. Think of Chambliss at Ole Miss and Aguilar at UT - both playing great football and fitting in well with the offensive scheme and team concept. Most of these 5-stars turn out to be camp wonders that don't quite adapt great to scheme or real fast action. Not sure where this lad fits, but hoping he is the signal and not the noise. Go DAWGS!
I'll be surprised if he ever shows up at UGA! If I were an elite QB I'm not sure this would be my destination! We shall see!
You are right except for one thing. CKS pushed DMathis and CBeck over more experienced SBIV before he finally gave in and let SBIV play.
It will be interesting to watch play out. I just think it is time for CKS to try something different by going for talent over experience at QB. He does it at every other position. I have pretty much given up trying to predict what happens at QB at UGA. The only thing that won't change at UGA regarding QB is that something will change regarding QB at UGA.
Curtis has beaten two AAA teams this year with his A team and it looks like he put the team on his shoulders and carried them. I think he is probably a generational QB and we aren't likely to see his like again for quite a while.
well I’ll give Kirby a pass on Mathis…crazy circumstances and if there wasn’t the pandemic I think it’s likely Mathis never starts a game.
Once Stetson got the nod over Carson in 2021 that was it. I never heard or saw anything that made me think Carson would unseat Stetson. I think if JT might’ve been healthier it’s possible he would’ve pulled Stetson in 21 but by the time he was Kirby never would’ve done it. Kirby seems to ride with his QB. Even when Carson was throwing picks last year they never tried Gunner. Only when Carson was hurt.
@AMIDawgMarkM - I’m with you. I said several times several months ago that I liked the QB in Texas who plays against really good competition almost every week. Well, he’s going to OK. He’s also getting the best reviews among the high school QBs in this class. You got 4 down votes. We’re probably in a contest to see who gets the most down votes. Sadly, I got a late start. 😏😂
" Kirby seems to ride with his QB". He does. And UGA has not won a play off game going on 3 years. UGA not likely to win a playoff game this year either based on what we have seen so far.
"insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result," Something tells me that IF Curtis is as good as advertised CKS does not let another 5* QB walk. He'll have to put him in there, coach him up and live with the results.
"well I’ll give Kirby a pass on Mathis…crazy circumstances and if there wasn’t the pandemic I think it’s likely Mathis never starts a game." CKS had SBIV on his team for 2 years and picked inexperienced Mathis to start over him. Not sure he gets a pass for that. He obviously thought Mathis had the higher ceiling. Mathis had a long run called back early in that game. I sometimes wonder how he would've done in that game w/o that penalty putting UGA in a hole.
CKS eventually saw that SBIV offered mobility and escape ability and how the team rallied around him. THAT gave the team the best chance to win despite the recklessness and, supposedly, limited ceiling. JT did not offer that. At that time I thought JT had a better chance to help UGA climb that last mountain (Alabama) than SBIV. And for 3 3/4 games out of 4 I was right. I just didn't realize then that NO UGA QB can beat Alabama.
CKS may never change his spots. But his system/methods are not delivering the results we have all grown to expect. Times are changing. Is UGA really going to pay top dollar NIL for 2 or 3 years for this kid to sit on the bench?
well, if Jamie Newman doesn’t opt out, Mathis likely doesn’t play is what I meant. Word was Mathis carved us up in practice. I think when he got that first big hit post brain surgery he didn’t know how to handle it. Monken himself told Stetson he shouldn’t get any reps. I think everyone can get a pass on Stetson at that stage bc he didn’t look like “The One” up until 2021.
THE QB position IMHO is the hardest to judge of al positions. Look at all the NFL QB's who got drafted high, went to bad teams and played poorly "THey're a bust!" only to get traded to a different team and walla of a sudden they're winners! THey let Joe Burrow walk from Ohio St. Other mistakes have been made. Monken telling SB he would never start at UGA. THen you start Dwan Mathis over SB? Seriously?
All of that just tells me that what you see in practice, a QB's height, his arm strength, the throws he makes or can't make. leadership blah blah blah, it's when the lights come on against anotherteam and defensive ends are coming after you , and the adrenaline is through the roof, that's how you best determine who your best QB is.
THe only problem with that is that decision is made in practice. And once your pecking order gets established there, whoever doesn't get dubbed QB1 rarely gets any meaningful time in a real game with the game in his hands.
It took a convergence of a tranfer who quit the team, another one who got injured and another one coming off a serious injury who must of looked the part in practice but fell apart in a real game with real hits, in order for SB to get to play period!~. We're talking almost a miracle chain of events had to happen. It was never because the coaches said THis is our guy!" Talk about KIrby and Monken getting dealt a royal flush when in truth they never saw it coming!
Some will make the argument we were so good on defense during that time we could of put basically anyone in there at that time and had the same outcome of 2 NC's. Yeh, just anyone could have stood in there against BAMA and Ohio St. and delivered the throws and runs SB made under pressure with the games on the line. Yeh, right!
Newman! (in my best Seinfeld voice) Almost forgot about him. I thought he had a good chance for success. Played well in the ACC. Big, strong, successful runner, high completion %. He (or his advisors) really did himself a disservice opting out '20. He/his advisors thought he was a lock for Rd 1 and he didn't want to jeopardize that by playing himself out of Rd 1 (a la CBeck '24). He not played himself out of the entire draft.
The other possibility? He knew he was a fraud (for want of a better word) and used the Covid season to bail out while his value was perceived to be high. But if that were true, why would he transfer to the SEC in the 1st place? I don't think Monken liked him (or SBIV). Gotta wonder what the whole story is.
Would've been interesting to see how CKS would've handled the QB position if he bombed. Would he have stuck with him like he does with his other experienced QB's?
