This is the youngest defense we've fielded, maybe ever. Also, keep in mind, Smart has a solid hand in defensive development. Has this year's D been the GA D we've come to expect under Smart? Absolutely not. Does is seem like Schumann was definitely being ghost-written by Muschamp? Absolutely. But still, they've come through. "Off with his head" kinds of reactions tend to be… well… reactionary. Let's consider what he has to work with and what he has to work against. The zone scheme against Ole Miss might have worked, but the zones were played toooooooo softly. As we moved to more man coverage, not so much an issue. Still, we can't play man every down. I really do trust Smart when he says that it comes down to execution. I HATE when people refer to UGA as the "pups," largely because it's just so simple, ****, and uncreative. In this case, though, our D is largely made up of pups. Guys who still have a good bit of growing and learning to do. The good thing is that they ARE growing and learning. Sometimes it's a two steps forward/one step back kind of thing, but steps forward are steps forward.
Am I skeptical whether Schumann can get the job done? Yes. Is the jury out? No.
Man, the fourth quarter was so exciting. Seeing every part of the team do what it ought to be doing.
I’m sort of shocked that the AP actually went along with the Coaches Poll for a change. They usually put us less than the Coaches. But it’s good !! Now just hang out in that top five.
All though I know Every game has to be taken seriously, Who do Yall think is our most dangerous for remaining ? As I much as it gags me to have to say this I think the tech Bugs are.
Really appreciate your positive attitude !! I Try to be that way. This weekend on the game thread was the most negative I’ve been in gosh years and years. I was So angry and frustrated with our Defense including the Coaching.
But as much as I dislike giving Kiffin credit he Is an excellent Offensive minded coach. I Knew going in it would be a tough game I just didn’t think it’d be That tough.
Now I don’t Hate Kiffin, I just don’t particularly like him. I don’t care much for his brand of humor either. But I don’t wish him any evil on a personal basis . Hope our Dawgs get healed up good and ready to face the balance of the schedule. Go Dawgs !!
Look, we are young, and it shows in a lot of areas. These young guys need to learn that speed does not always beat technique. Cole had a sack but came in too hot on Chambliss and wiffed. Dominique Ellis does not use his speed when he comes off the line and then tries to catch up and gets PI's…a lot. Our DL bull rushes too much and does not try to slip in between blocks. Just learning from those guys. They will be better as the games go on. Our non-conference schedule has done us no favors in terms of preparing us for the year. But I will say this, our Defense needs to create more turnovers. We have to be almost last in the nation in defensive turnovers.
