Any decent coordinator, QB and fan can tell you the coverage by looking at the DBs alignment.
okay, I’ll bite - I’ll consider you a “decent” fan. Other than press coverage, how are you going to tell??
D everrett may have been man cover, but it wasnt tight. Thats wrong
Not if it's disguised properly. Not pre-snap, anyway. That's the whole point of all that movement on both sides of the ball. And, you can split zone and man or change it up at the LOS.
IMO. Just sayin'...it's not easy to determined which guys are gonna drop out of the box into coverage and which ones will rush or spy. It's a game within a game. That's why quarterbacks and coaches get paid the big bucks.
Moreover....today's game is getting more and more complicated, with some of the rules changes.
The way I look at it....the object is, to keep their points off the board and score more than they do. I don't care, if they drive up and down the field, eating clock....as long as they "don't score".
I laugh everytime I think of Dan Mullin at a post-game news conference...trying to equivocate & rationalize a loss to Tennessee by saying..."We had more yards than they did"....as if.
Lmao...in other words..." We lost...but, looked good doin' it". He was fired a few games later. That's what focusing on style-over-substance will getcha.
I'm definitely no expert, but what I've seen at both the college and pro level is that when you play loose coverage (especially a deep zone) especially when you are in a prevent defense or just "trying hard not to lose", the offense destroys you with 10-15 yard plays and pretty soon they are getting ready to score. I have no problems with M2M and I'd certainly trust Smart to know his Defenses.
You can play zone or man to man with 4 down linemen, it doesn't matter. The issue that some teams have with zone, is that many miss their assignments because of "eye discipline"/focus. In other words, they are not picking up intended receivers when they leave one zone & cross into someone else's…. or, they are just getting flat -out beat - that happens. Speaking of the DB's, the linebackers are in zone most all the time and have shorter space to cover.
Both zone and man 2 man are tough for the inexperienced, especially at this level. You certainly need a special athlete for man coverage. More focus & eye - discipline for zone. And you have to certainly know your opponent, circumstances & situation before you know what you want to be in (zone/man).
In short, zone or man 2 man - it doesn't matter, they need to learn and be able to execute both. The QB doesn't give 2 flips what it is, he is going to hit whoever is open. Inexperience and getting pressure are the biggest issues…not schematic or coaching, nobody can cover all day. It's just basically beating the man in front of you, getting pressure, growing pains & patience (coaches/fans) - plain and simple.
And blitzing is not always the answer - you blitz, you are leaving someone open.
Pretty sure the staff knows what they are doing. I think they are doing a helluva job - the team is progressing. They certainly know the athlete and the team, they see it every day. The staff knows what they are doing. It would be great if we had another Davis, Carter and a Wyatt, that certainly would take some of the pressure off them. People are just going to have to develop - "all plays work if they are executed".
On a side note, not sure why a couple of our replies got deleted, I thought they were civil.
Yep - they don't know when you are going to blitz, twist, stunt - or know whether you are in a zone or man, etc. The same with offense, all you have are formations & keys to go on for the D' ….and a good guess as to what the play is.
UNLESS - you are inside the huddle or know someone's defensive signs.
I wish the NCAA would adopt the NFL rule of no contact with a receiver after 5 yds. Make these DB's learn to cover somebody rather than grabbing , and pushing all the way down the field and never locating the ball. Plus the officials can still call PI anytime they take a notion.
If the young pups would just tackle or make a play, everytime they have the opportunity...that would resolve 50% of UGA's defensive woes. Imo.
They've been improving on everything...BUT, tackling. It may be a yourh/size issue. I'm hoping...cause, that can be and will be fixed.
IMO....we need to see a little more of the "fire & fury" we've been hearing about. On the defensive side of the ball. I couldn't be prouder of the young pups on offense.
The Defense is supposed to be ahead of the offense in the first half of the season. Which makes me wonder just how high this Offense can climb. They MAY be the best in the Country. Time will tell.
Good comments !! To quote you and I agree. “ And blitzing is not always the answer - you blitz, you are leaving someone open.” The old adage comes to mind “ You live or die by the blitz”.
Now not to contradict myself or sound like I’m backing up in my agreement with you. But When they do bring the blitz I wish they’d bring everything but the kitchen sink !! I mean a Hard GATA blitz !! Sack the QB hard ( Don’t Rough him though !!) but make him start hearing footsteps that ain’t really there !! You know what I mean.
Can’t just let the QB ( especially a good one) just sit back there and pick us to pieces !! Now you know as good or probably better than me that YES there’s a chance we might get our eyes stung out !! But there’s a good chance we can get to the rival QB and introduce him to the ground !! Like I say I don’t recommend using the blitz to much as it Is risky. But gotta get some pressure on these rival QBs. Those last few plays where the Dawgs made them have to punt (was it twice or three times ? My memory is shot Lol !!) but the Dawgs looked allot more like the Dawgs defenses of better times in those plays.
In the end it’s all about execution. If the Dawgs can execute at a high level they can Afford to play man2man almost exclusively. Let’s hope they do. Go Dawgs !!
