@navydawg Even though you admit to showing some partiality towards him, your's is a very realistic assessment of Gunner Stockton and I am inclined to agree. His "likability" is off the chart, as is his grit, toughness, and determination. He is the personification of what a Georgia Bulldog is, as we have come to know it. With his work ethic and desire to grow as a QB and leader, I would imagine that when September rolls around we will see a top 5 (3?) QB wearing #14 ready to lead the Dawgs. I'm anticipating a remarkable improvement from GS that will put the entire college football world on notice.
As for Bobo and Searls getting better at their jobs, I don't know their personalities so I can't say. If they are realistic and understand that there is always room for improvement, then it can happen. If they are steadfast in the notion that they are at the top of their craft and no one can advise them, then the likelihood of improvement will be greatly diminished. Bobo would be wise to consult some others who are familiar with the UGA program and have been incredibly successful as an OC (Todd Monkin).
Very good comments !! And I always enjoy your reasonable and well thought out comments. As you know very well there is a big difference between criticism and pessimism. Criticism can and many times is a positive thing. The belief that with changes among many things a person and/or group Can get better at what they do.
Pessimism, well you know. Just like you already knew the difference between those two. I was saying that to preface my position.
I’ve been accused here before of seeing our Dawgs, in particular Gunner through rose colored glasses. That insinuates to an extent that I’m very naive and know very little about the game.
I’m neither naive or illiterate about the game of football. Though I would Never promote myself as an Expert, or Coach in waiting. I’m neither of those either. Just a typical fan.
It’s just that I Prefer looking at things with a positive mind set, at least I try hard to have that mind set. I honestly believe that a Fan can enjoy this Game played by their favorite team while still acknowledging there are deficiencies and room for improvement.
I’ve also been accused of taking this Game way to seriously. And having to much Love and Respect for Gunner. I readily admit I do love Dawgs football and I do tend to get emotional over it. It’s my prime leisure hobby. As for Gunner he embodies the qualities I’d love to see in pretty much every young American man. All those wonderful qualities you cited and I fully agree including a healthy dose of humility. He in my view reminds me of CFB back in its glory days before NIL and the TP.
I think, no I believe you can be positive and looking up about this Game and our favorite team while acknowledging there are serious changes and efforts, work etc. that Must take place.
If this were War my attitude would be vastly different. But in the end it’s a Game. I Really don’t like losing and Love winning. But losing games are just as much a part of reality as winning. If I’m gonna Enjoy this Game I must be willing to take losses in stride. Or live in More misery than I already have and I don’t need or want that. If I were employed by the UGA football program or had money betting on what they do I’d be vastly more serious than I already am. But I’m not an employee and don’t gamble. I play a little Ga. lottery along and along which is really a t u p I d on my part Lol.
So in the end I’d rather be Hopeful and Believe that Hey these Dawgs Are gonna get better. Or think No these Dawgs are not gonna get any better they are losers. Well Gosh if I feel that latter thought Why even watch the games ? Less alone buy any of their merchandise ?
I know you’ve been like me a Dawgs fan for a long, long time. I always enjoy your comments for the reasons I stated earlier, Plus like Fortunately Many on here you have a positive tone to your comments. You have Hope for better. Like me and Many others here I know you’ve seen some of the Best times and Worse times of Dawgs football. What I Try hard to do is blot out the bad times, remember fondly the good times, and Hope for the future !! Go Dawgs !!
@navydawg please don’t ever change!
GO DAWGS!
Joe Cox was a “likable workman” and showed efficiency but was not a great quarterback. He was good and his season played out exactly that way.
I’m torn on placing blame for our quarterback play. Don’t get me wrong (although I know many will), I like Stockton a lot but I saw a lot of badly thrown bombs and a lot of not surveying the field and throwing to the same guy, over and over while not paying attention to the other guy(s). Was that the called play or bad judgement? I don’t know because our coaching was lacking but being likable doesn’t win games.
And I appreciate a running quarterback who can throw but I’d take a passing quarterback who can run every day of the week. I’d rather have that 1000 yards more passing.
If Gunner is the guy, and I believe he can be, he needs to be better. Coaching needs to be better, for certain but it is a big field and there is more than one receiver. Everyone one this board made the same basic comments in games.
Our running game should and better be dominant. Gunner will be better. It was his first year starting and he had 34 TDs people. I mean come on. He has to get better between the hashes. That’s probably a big point of emphasis this offseason. To me, that team we played before GaTech everything was going good then we throw that interception and it did something to his confidence then throws the exact same interception against Tech. Offense was never the same. Tech was absolutely horrible on defense and when we didn’t hang +40 on them we should have known. When we got a great team that game is never close. I don’t care about a rival game and this or that when GA is rolling we stomp an mudhole in Tech. Our defense played out of its mind against Bama. Offense had maybe 3 drives. That’s about it. All the three outs have to stop. Just think about Ole Miss if we just get one first down in the middle of that game. That’s it just one first down. The coaching was horrible in that game. The last five minutes. The Defense as a whole will be our best defense since the title teams. Nowadays great coaching can beat the Jimmy and Joes if the great coaching is being used on 22/23/24/25 year olds. Their bodies have been lifting weights and conditioning and watching film and seeing the college game for 3-5 more years then freshmen and sophomores. 3-5 more years of college S&C program….physically is night and day.
yea should have ran out the clock at the end or picked up one freaking first down in the middle of the game. Our biggest weakness was throwing over the middle of the field this year. If we are gonna throw it at the end of the Sugar Bowl then what about the 6’13” TE we got. He is no string bean either. He also unlike a lot of 6’14” people has great body control and can jump. Like our chances that’s all better then whatever the hell that last playcall was. These two 6’ 10” tight ends we got for next year can flat out play. They are extremely athletic for the their size. Off the charts athleticism. It’s almost you could throw it to them every play. That’s the advantage. That’s not rocket science. This sport is easy. Coach said they can run it or throw it. It ain’t that **** hard.
One thing Cignetti’s sound defense can’t stop Ellis’s Williams and Kaden Prothro bc you can have step stools and ladders on the football field. These two guys on top of being extremely tall are built and can jump and have great body control. If they don’t line them up at receiver and just say my guy is taller then you and has a better vertical then you which makes it impossible for you to defend this pass then I am losing all hope. I will just watch highschool football bc I have seen coaches say that’s my best player and one of the best players in the state. I am putting him at QB and we are winning a state championship. Sometimes it’s that simple. These two guys its as simple as just throw them a jump ball but they can run routes too. They beat the X’s and O’s.
I could be wrong and it sure wouldn’t be the first time. But the TE Prothro is going to be a Beast !! The DB Green is gonna be a Beast on Defense to !!
Talking about watching HS games I watched more this year on TV than I’ve watched in years, maybe ever. It’s mind boggling the size, speed, strength, and athleticism these kids already have in HS !!
Just thinking about the SEC level strength & conditioning Just those two I mentioned will get is exciting for the future.
OK I’m gonna go waaaay out on a limb here. IF he buys in and is totally motivated, and IF he receives quality strength & conditioning and coaching. You will see Prothro develop into Close to a Brock Bowers !!
NOT in his first year but you will start seeing him resemble Bowers in year two at UGA !! He will come close Maybe even as good as Bowers IF properly managed. Of course Most of it is based on His own desire and motivation.
A guy like Green will be tasked with trying to stop him and Green Will win some of those battles !! Green is gonna be Very good in time !!
Prothro and Elyiss Williams are going to be an unstoppable duo…book it. Now all we have to do is find an OC that isn't afraid to dial up some creative TE passing plays and actually call them during a game.
Amen Brother !! And Prothro Might break out in year one. I’m No expert, I’m No Coach just a Long time fan. But that kid has the “IT” factor !! I Know and Agree that Gunner needs to work much harder on over the middle passes and deep passes. But Bobo absolutely Must give him those opportunities !! And I’ll say this to Even with the very best QBs on Any pass but Especially in heavy traffic ( over the middle) and deep passes. One of three things are gonna happen, Success, A Miss, or an INT.
So and If Bobo let’s Gunner loose to throw those More then Yes look for the INT count to go up. But doctors use Risk vs Reward terminology it’s the same on this. No Risk No reward.
Gunner has a psych issue he’s got to work on to. This idea of “ I don’t want to do Anything to hurt my team” that’s Love. But holding back or Being held back he is or being caused to hurt his team.
Mike Bobo what ever else he might be is a DGD. The man Loves UGA. He played there. He Coached there before. His own Son plays there. I’m not getting into a debate about his OC abilities on this. I’m talking about his integrity as a man. Thus I don’t think Bobo is a Liar.
Bobo stated Clearly that Gunner is not close to his ceiling yet. The people here in Rabun County tell me Gunner Can and Did many times throw Beautiful deep passes and lasers over the middle. His HS stats support that.
Some will say Oh Yeah but that was vs HS level defenses. True but his support crew was HS level WRs, TEs and RBs. So it’s all relative right ? He Still has Three Ga. HS records that are unbroken so far.
Some have said KS and Bobo don’t Trust him to throw deep passes. Is that True and Accurate or is it actually something else ?? I don’t know. But this I DO Know. In order to Get Better ( a term we hear allot from KS) he needs to be Allowed to throw those type passes much more often. And YES you can almost bank some will be INTs. Which will immediately cause Some Dawgs ( Only Some) that are already overly critical to call Gunner a Loser.
But Beck has thrown 11 INTs over 15 games to Gunner’s 5 INTs over 14 games. Yet Gunner has one more TD total than Beck. But Beck and Miami are in the Ntl. Title game !!
SO it Has to be accepted unfortunately that Yes there will be some INTs. All Gunner and Bobo can do is try their very best to minimize them. BUT there will also along with Misses be TDs or huge yardage made ( Beck has much more Passing yardage than Gunner, but Gunner has much more Rushing than Beck).
Those success will Force rival defenses to Respect the Possibility. They won’t be able to crowd the LOS for fear of getting torched down field. Which will open much better play by our RBs.
To close this novel Lol !! Bobo and Gunner need to work Very hard on over the middle and deep passes and when the season starts Go For It !! And much more often than we Ever saw this last year !! Go Dawgs !! I’m Believing it Can happen if they’ll just Do It !!
I can't imagine how difficult it is to be KS and staff in this era. Recruiting, developing players, NIL, portal, $, rich benefactors buying teams. Wow. I really enjoy reading the comments of the peeps on this page, you can tell they love the Dawgs and know football. I can say of the many screams and rants I have had, the simplest to really help is one most have said: THROW TO THE TIGHT ENDS!!!! Geez, they are so skilled yet underutilized. Coach Bobo cant use the excuse he doesnt trust his Oline or the decision making of Gunner or the protection. Other teams Tight ends tend to eat us up. Why cant we? It will open up everything else. Am I missing something?
