Chicken or egg?
"Kirby Smart has made it clear that Georgia has to be a more explosive team this fall", CR (above).
"59% of his (GS) passes were thrown within 9 yards of the line of scrimmage. He (Gunner Stockton) only connected on 17 passes of 20-plus air yards", Saturday Down South article today. That's 17 20plus yard completions on 386 pass attempts. Let that sink in. Play calling more than execution.
SDS also said in the same article, "Stockton ranked sixth in Total QBR and third in EPA despite dealing with constant drop issues". I don't remember "constant drop issues" in '25. '24? Yes. '25? No. "sixth in Total QBR and third in EPA" sounds like GS did pretty well. GS stats were pretty good as a result of the super conservative play calling of CMB.
SDS also said, " Zach Branch (81 receptions) had a 38% target share among receivers". 38% of the offenses passes went to ZBranch? Branch's route were typically short. THAT (play calls) is on Bobo. I like Branch. He is good. But that stat alone shows how restricted GS was and/or how limited CMB's play calling was.
Chicken or egg? It will be fascinating to watch CMB's play calling and QB GS's execution in '26. These 2 things combined will determine UGA's ceiling in '26.
Totally agree !! It’s a Need for all Three components to get better ( really four). The O Line better at protecting. The ball catchers be it a WR or a TE getting better separation from the defender. GS seeing the field better and getting the ball out quicker.
And that fourth component RBs doing a better job. As the passing compliments the Run game and the Run game compliments the pass game. Actually there is a fifth Coach Bobo using plays that compliments the player’s strengths and reduces the weaknesses.
So there’s plenty of room for everyone to improve. And if I understood him that’s what KS was trying to say. I agree GS picked up critical 1st downs with his legs many times last year. But folks tend to not remember that as they are looking only at his passing game. Which is understandable.
QBs have to be able to trust their targets. The vast majority of the time Branch was where he was supposed to be when he was supposed to be. In addition to the YAC I think that’s why GS had a tendency ( as a first year starter) to dial in on Branch. The rival defense did to. So Some of the time that other guys were “wide open” for GS wasn’t necessarily because they had done a good job of shaking off a defender ( though there were times they did) but because GS and the rival defense were looking at Branch.
NOW GS is much more experienced. AND he will have I Believe more and I Believe in some cases better targets to throw to. Not better than Branch, I’m saying better as a unit. I’m primarily referring to the TEs. If we see the vast potential of the TE unit sure to goodness Coach Bobo sees it.
So YES and more YES Gunner does have to improve. BUT so does the rest of the O and that includes Coach Bobo dialing up good to great plays. Now just my opinion but I Believe the O will improve. And significantly at that. We’ll see……… P.S. On the deep passes you have in no certain order: Williams, Prothro, Barbour, Taylor, that’s at least four right there that could be deep threats, there are others.
Off Topic. I realize this is about the Offense. But look for the Dawgs Defense to score some points to on pick6s and maybe safeties to !! Just my humble opinion but I Believe this Dawgs Defense could be the best we’ve seen since 2021 !! That’s barring any of that nasty word that starts with an I and ends with bug !!
I Believe that by the time our Dawgs face a good team the Defense will be really, really good and again barring that nasty word will only get better as the year goes on. Giving the O better field position, maybe even points on the board and confidence will help the whole team !
Now back to the O for a moment. I hope our Dawgs are aggressive on Both sides of the ball. If they get an early lead on the rival Don’t Stop !! Keep the pedal to the floor, continue scoring, and take away all hopes from the rival. Go Dawgs !!
"Actually there is a fifth Coach Bobo using plays that compliments the player’s strengths and reduces the weaknesses."____ @navydawg
IMO, Navy.....THAT is exactly what he's been doing. But, my opinion flies in the face of " The Media Narrative". Lol
They don't know who else to blame for the lack of explosion in the passing game....So....let's blame the play caller. Lol.…I've said before....Bobo is limited in what he can call on the intermediate passing game.
As far as Bobo is concerned....the reasons for the conservative approach in the passing game, over the last couple of years, vary. But....start & end with O-line and QB-WR Experience level and health.
The good news is....'26 is gonna look a lot better than '21...on the Offensive side of the ball. I look for an offense similar to the one "Urban Tebow" (lol) ran out of at Florida.
I would say, they're gonna look a lot like the "Stetson Monken Offense"....but....no Bowers, McConkey or Cook. And, Stockton is a different kind of quarterback than Bennett. Not better....just different.
I like what I've heard about UGA's new and "improved" coaching staff...on both sides of the ball. THAT....will go a long way, in fixing some of the Dawgs' recent issues....imo.
Man!!!! Have you taken a good look at this year's schedule? It's CRAZY!
If ANYBODY from the SEC makes it to the Championship Game....GIVE EM A RING!
I don't even care if they win the game.…they are Champions at that point, in my eyes. They've EARNED a spot.
Which is a helluva lot more than I can say for some of these others being pushed into a "College Football D1 Playoff". Baloney!!!
If everybody had to play an SEC Schedule....some of the teams currently being "included"...wouldn't have the personnel to compete, at the end of the Season. Forget Playoffs...Lmao.
They'd have to pull a "Covid Vanderbilt Move"....and, politely bow out. Lol
Oh I wasn’t trying to say that it All falls on CMB. I was just saying it’s no One thing. But I strongly Believe the O will indeed improve and significantly at that. This team has some real gamers on Both sides of the ball !!
Yeah...I don't disagree. In fact...I think that we're all on the same page this year.
We all know what the Dawgs have, heading into the '26 Season. I guess the resounding question is....what will they have at the end of the Season.
Imo....with THAT schedule...they're gonna a little luck to win a Natty. They don't play in the ACC or the BIG10/12 where you might face an occasional challenge.
And Touchdown Jesus doesn't favor them....he works for the Irish up North. Lol
That being said....a little Prayer wouldn't hurt....just sayin'.....Jesus can be flipped. Lmao
