Georgia at Alabama

I realize this isn't the biggest thing happening in Georgia athletics tonight. But I'm here in Tuscaloosa to cover Georgia's game at Alabama. As usual, check here for updates and anlysis.

Very interested to see how UGA handles the los of Yante. Do you think they change the style of play at all?

    Georgia's starting lineup post-Yante Maten:

Turtle Jackson re-enters, taking the place of Maten. So a point guard comes in for the power forward, and Georgia goes with a small lineup:

    G-Turtle Jackson
    G-JJ Frazier
    F-Juwan Parker
    F-E'Torrion Wilridge
    C-Derek Ogbeide

About to tip off here. Not a packed house by any means, despite a team in the running for an NCAA bid. Not unusual, though, as Alabama faces the same hurdles attendance wise: Midweek games in Tuscaloosa (just as in Athens) don't usually draw well.

A sign that it may not be Georgia's night: On Alabama's first possession, the shot clock had almost ran out when a Crimson Tide player, literally on his knees after diving for the ball, heaved the ball at the basket ... and it went in.

Turtle Jackson so far validating the decision to start him, has four points early as Georgia leads 8-4.

Houston Kessler comes in, airballs a 3, now Derek Ogbeide checking in.

Tyree Crump enters and becomes the 10th player for Georgia.

Alabama, meanwhile, struggling mightily on offense. Georgia out to a 12-4 lead, but could've been more.

Alabama's D'Armond Davis hits two straight 3s, to finally get Alabama going.

J.J. Frazier is 2-for-6 from the field, but they've all been good shots, and he's also drawn fouls twice to get to the line. This is what Frazier has to do now with Maten out: Try to take control, and either score or draw attention that opens up thing for teammates.

Derek Ogbeide playing really well so far. He just got his fifth rebound, hauling in an offensive rebound in between two Alabama players, and was fouled in the process. Georgia leads 24-14, and Ogbeidi going to the line after the timeout.

This is starting well for Georgia, which if it can keep this up, Alabama doesn't typically have the 3-point shooting to mount a quick rally. I say "typically" because we saw what happened the first time they played.

    Halftime: Georgia 30, Alabama 18.

It looked like Georgia was going to finish the half on at least a 6-0 run, but Frazier lost the ball driving, and it gave Alabama’s Avery Johnson Jr. a breakaway dunk at the buzzer.

A potential momentum-turner if Alabama comes back here.

Still, all in all a great first half for Georgia, as its zone really gave Alabama problems, and forced them to take a lot of shots they obviously didn't like. The Crimson Tide were 7-for-31 from the field, and 1-for-4 from the free throw line. Yikes.

Georgia, on the other hand, played very patient and generally took good shots, ending up 12-for-23 from the field. Some good minutes by Turtle Jackson, Derek Ogbeide and of course Frazier, who's leading the way with 11 points.

Another notable stat: Georgia didn't make a single 3 in the first half. In fact it only tried two, and one of the was a Houston Kessler airball. So Georgia has only had one 3 even hit the rim - and yet still leads by 12. That'll happen when the other team shoots 23 percent.

Ooh, early Tyree Crump PT in the second half, coming in at the 17:41 mark. Georgia leads by 11.

Frazier’s 3 from the corner, Georgia’s first of the game, made it 36-22 with 17 minutes left. But Alabama’s Ar’Mond Davis answered with a 3.

Davis, who entered averaging just 6.3 points per game, now has 13. File this under "He was in the scouting report, right?"

Need JJ back on the floor to settle things down.
