Hey folks - as a member of the DawgNation community, please remember to abide by simple rules of civil engagement with other members:
- Please no inappropriate usernames (remember that there may be youngsters in the room)
- Personal attacks on other community members are unacceptable, practice the good manners your mama taught you when engaging with fellow Dawg fans
- Use common sense and respect personal differences in the community: sexual and other inappropriate language or imagery, political rants and belittling the opinions of others will get your posts deleted and result in warnings and/ or banning from the forum
- 3/17/19 UPDATE -- We've updated the permissions for our "Football" and "Commit to the G" recruiting message boards. We aim to be the best free board out there and that has not changed. We do now ask that all of you good people register as a member of our forum in order to see the sugar that is falling from our skies, so to speak.

Not saying DW won’t be a nice player for Dawgs - just saying he is not explosive nor in same class as Arik Gilbert.
The routes, the film and the Sparq numbers bare that out. All done for Gilbert at a much higher level of competition.
Not saying you shouldn’t be excited about DW - just pushing back against the narrative that he is “just as good” as Gilbert. He just isn’t.
Washington is a better TE than Gilbert, Gilbert is a better pass catcher than Washington. There is so much more required to play TE in a pro-style offense than being explosive. If we were a spread offense I would go with Gilbert but we are not hence Washington is the better choice. I am surprised that LSU is not in it for Gilbert given their change in offensive philosophy.
No point in arguing it anymore. We will revisit in 2022 when it will be obvious you were wrong 😎
I think the biggest thing you guys are arguing about is trying to compare them apples to oranges. Washington is a TE. Gilbert isn’t. He has said as much. Are we comparing Washington to a flex WR like Gilbert or are we comparing Gilbert to a TE that has to be a good blocker? They aren’t on the same foundation of comparison.
Don't understand how you can be so definitive about this. Thinking someone will be better and stating it as a certainty are completely different.
We can all make assumptions - but to put your foot down and say you know for sure what the outcome will be in 3 years is irresponsible.
You may end up right - but you don't know any more than any one else.
You look at a few combine numbers and watch a little Hudl film - I guess you are now an expert evaluator.
I think both of you are posting about the wrong thing Gilbert does not want to play TE so should be compared to WRs. Then there is the small fact that Gilbert seems to not want to go to Georgia. I think that both Gilbert and Washington are takes if they want to come. However I do question the room in the class if this recruitment goes into January. There are around 6 to 8 slots available and other important recruits on Georgia's board. Jeff's board from last Wednesday:
1 Kelee Ringo CB ✔
2 Noah Sewell ATH/LB
3 Zachary Evans RB
4 Jordan Burch SDE
5 Elias Ricks CB
6 Darnell Washington TE
7 Theo Johnson TE
8 Zykeivous Walker
9 Arik Gilbert ATH/TE
10 Gervon Dexter DT
Would be cool if we could have more in depth discussion of which TE has the most potential. Coach Donnan used just a couple of words yesterday to answer the question: DW.
@oldon42
This is a lead in to something I was thinking about for the last hour or so. That's where will the next commit come from - AZ, TX, NV, UT or Canada in addition to the usually SE States. How times have changed (for the better IMO).
I thought Tate already earned his after the opening performance?
Do we know if Sewell projects as a Mike or Will? And could someone who knows more about football then me explain what the differing traits one might have that would make them project at one vs the other?
Tex, that's Sam Pittman you're talking to. He's forgotten more about football than we'll ever know.
and I'm all in for Mining the Golden State for the best of their best.
Here is your accurate comp for DW - former Falcon TE and tallest TE in NFL - Levine Toilolo. Has a 31” vertical (over an inch higher than Washington). Slightly slower 40 (4.86 vs 4.78).
Good player for Stanford but nothing special. Being taller than 6’5”-6’6” isn’t an advantage. Most tall DBs are 6’1”-6’2”.
Much rather have a TE 2-3” shorter with elite COD and movement skills.
Toilolo had a nice career at Stanford backing up Ertz and being 2nd banana for a few years before he became starter his senior season. Nothing wrong with Toilolo and liked him with Falcons. He just isn’t special- he’s not a game changer.
I believe that was only on Rivals and not the composite
Sewell probably projects as a Mike.
Depends on how Kirby wants to run his defense but typically a Mike is the bigger and stronger player - sheds blocks from lineman or fullbacks and stops runs up the middle and short passes over the middle.
Will is typically smaller, faster and more athletic. Probably better in coverage and flows better from sideline to sideline. Great open field tackler.
I would question if Sewell would be the linebacker in the dime.
In the typical 3-4 defense the star replaces the Sam LB in nickle. And the Money replaces the Will in dime. But Kirby seems to move the Will to the Mike in dime defense and the player that was playing Mike leaves the field. Meaning I doubt Sewell would be the Mike in dime defense.
Hope that wasn't overly confusing.
